TheEntity,

iMessage is preinstalled

The whole point is: it isn't more often than not. And unlike Whatsapp, you can't even install it.

TheEntity,

Not every phone is an iPhone though.

TheEntity,

Even if it wasn't, technological illiteracy cannot justify imposing a vendor lock-in upon the others. Installing an independent messenger like Signal is not rocket science.

TheEntity,

Let me check it out, mate...

co -l

Yep, it checks out.

Do you think it would be understandable/alright to be discriminatory towards people who identify with a world culture if that culture ended up declaring nuclear war and going through with the threats?

It’s no secret I’m on the misanthropy spectrum, but as such a person you could say that about, I wanted to ask this ever since hearing this conveyed in response to recent events which sees three spheres of influence now arguably possessing the potential to deliver on such promises. Like… what’s the deal?

TheEntity,

That would imply nuking people is "a Jewish thing". Do we really want to go there?

TheEntity,

I'm pretty sure the same operation without Git (or another VCS) would be infinitely more troublesome, not less.

TheEntity,

I'd argue at this point it's merely "a PC formerly known as Steam Deck".

TheEntity,

Not for the abusers. They'd rather shape your experience and groom you into a perfect abuse victim.

TheEntity,

If they are internal and permanent (read: unlikely to be removed on a daily basis), I'd just mount them based on their purpose and not them being separate HDDs physically. If they are meant for logs, mount them at /var/log. If they are meant for your movies, /home/user/data is more than fine. In general FHS describes the directory hierarchy, not which parts of it are mountpoints and which are physically on the same media. Technically you're fine having each and every directory on a separate HDD.

TheEntity,

"Local" in this context means local to this whole machine. From the perspective of a single user, it's system-wide. But then from the perspective of a sysadmin managing dozens of such systems, it's local.

TheEntity,

Time to show only the first 3 words of the title.

TheEntity,

This thread is so delightfully wholesome, I want all my social media interactions to be like this. :)

A vaginal ring that discreetly delivers anti-HIV drugs will reach more women (www.npr.org)

Women in a growing number of African countries will soon have access to a vaginal ring to help reduce their risk of acquiring HIV from an infected partner. And they can use it discreetly, without their partner or anyone else knowing. The ring is inserted and slowly releases the antiretroviral drug dapivirine for a month, when it...

TheEntity,

I can't wait for some pope to tell the Africans it's wrong to use these. Again.

TheEntity,

Honestly I can't say that I miss installing rootkits with terrifying privileges just to play games. I'd rather limit the privileges games have with Flatpak etc., not give them even more.

TheEntity,

From their FAQ:

Q: What shells does Wave Terminal support?
A: We currently only support bash. […]

Seems at least dishonest to advertise it as a "terminal" if it works only with a specific shell. It's okay to have extra features enabled by escape codes emitted by the shell, but if it goes beyond that, I'd say it's not just a terminal anymore.

TheEntity,

What's the deal with both the oatmeal and nickelback?

TheEntity,

All kinds of Indian curry. I cannot get enough of it.

TheEntity,

Placating them doesn't look like a great solution to me.

TheEntity,

Not even country. More like its government and the way legal matters are handled there.

TheEntity,

The IMAP support has been more or less broken since the very beginning. Their custom labels make folders behave in a non-standard way and the IMAP itself is terribly slow compared to every single other provider I've used. I used to have dedicated workarounds in my email automation scripts for their weird folder semantics, for even such trivial tasks as actually deleting an email as opposed to merely removing a label from it.

It's already unusable as far as I'm concerned.

TheEntity,

Prey (2017), Monster Hunter, Stalker, Dark Souls. All great games that only show their true self after some time investment. Not too ridiculous time investment apart from Monster Hunter which gets really fun literally only after a few tens of hours, maybe even a hundred. I wish I was kidding.

TheEntity,

It’s still fake. But if it looks like a person in real life, what difference does the distinction make?

I'm pretty sure there is a quite a difference between an actual human being abused and a victimless depiction of such act. Not unlike watching a violent movie. Such people obviously still need help and treatment, but to me it seems vastly better than the alternative.

TheEntity,

It very much might be an either/or situation for many, even if it's not in all the cases.

TheEntity,

Back at you. We're both speculating.

TheEntity,

Previously you claimed it's enabling the behavior. Is it? Or is it merely a speculation?

TheEntity,

So it's really a slippery slope of customer rights!

TheEntity,

What about other email providers?

TheEntity,

Yes, let's willingly give Google even more control over our data, that's a great idea.

TheEntity, (edited )

We didn't. The new publisher (Gearbox) apparently did.

EDIT: Apparently it was already started by the original devs even before the acquisition, see the comments below. I must admit, the multiplayer was wonky so there is some merit to it.

[Question] Were can i find a list of Safe Sites where buy Steam Games/Keys/Bundles??

As pc gamer (and new Deck owner) i’ve started to check any good game deal, mostly x games on Steam but not only. I’ve soon realize that there are great site like Humble to use to buy keys for cheap, but also “shady” sites with very low price who apparently sell non working keys or try to scam you. Did we have a list of...

TheEntity,

The issue isn't the safety of your payment method or not working keys. The issue is with how they source their keys. They are often bought with stolen credit cards and sold to them. It's quite complicated but the end result is that the game developers are literally losing money on these services due to chargebacks and such.

TheEntity,

That's what I meant. They are sold to them by the users. And these users are often card thieves, directly or indirectly. Whether we like it or not it's a de facto money laundering system.

TheEntity,

And even if they exist but hide, the aliens will purge them if we vote for them, so we can get rid of them preemptively. It's a win-win!

TheEntity,

Careful with this dependency resolution. I predict lots of conflicts.

TheEntity,

How are they even going to prove a specific person agreed to these terms or even used their app?

TheEntity,

The last time I checked, they didn't even require clicking any confirmation email. Every time I visit a McDonald's I reinstall their app and just create a new bullshit account with a temporary email which I don't even need to check. For all they know, you might have created an account with my email and agreed to the terms (just an example). It's unenforceable on so many levels I'm dumbfounded.

TheEntity,

My point was that they don't even verify the email address you provide. It can be anyone's address.

TheEntity,

Both the dev and his game are amazing. Highly recommended.

TheEntity,

Prey (2017), Dark Souls, Outer Wilds. In no particular order.

TheEntity,

We get it Elon, your X has left you.

TheEntity,

Is this even a problem? Elon can keep his fringe groups and trollbots, I don't mind.

TheEntity,

[…] water resistance is one of those things phones love advertising but nobody ever notices.

Water resistance is something I do not want to notice because if I notice it, it means it has failed. Do I trust it completely? Hell no. Do I prefer to have it? Hell yea!

TheEntity,

Yes and no. It's much better suited for desktop applications. Try to run something playing audio in Docker. It's doable but not pleasant in any way.

TheEntity,

No, I didn't. Looks interesting. Not something I'm looking for right now but I'll keep it in mind.

Amazon issues warning about major change for Kindle users starting next month (goodereader.com)

In a recent communication, Amazon has alerted Kindle users about significant changes set to take effect from next month. The notification pertains to the phasing out of support for sending MOBI (.mobi, .azw, .prc) files through the “Send to Kindle” feature, starting November 1, 2023. This change, as News18 pointed out,...

TheEntity,

Wait, does Kindle handle epub now?
