I’ll go first. Mine is that I can’t stand the Deadpool movies. They are self aware and self referential to an obnoxious degree. It’s like being continually reminded that I am in a movie. I swear the success of that movie has directly lead to every blockbuster having to have a joke every 30 seconds
I feel like it’s sort of a citizen Kane kinda thing. It’s a really important movie, and considering its time and context it was a very good movie, but it isn’t a particularly fun film to watch these days.
It turns out a lot of people (who aren’t otherwise interested in xkcd but would like a relevant one in the moment) really don’t care about the alt-text and titles.
I’m with you, but more often than not in the “relevant xkcd” moment, people lack interest for the alt text.
Oh, and I hadn’t realized how awful youtube became over the last year or so with the ads. I was just dealing with it like an asshole. When I put ublock back on, my enjoyment of youtube shot up!
Try getting some kind of sponsorblock, too. I didn’t realize how annoying those little messages were until I didn’t have to manually speed through them.
I couldn’t find the Flintstones movie from 1994 anywhere but googling it I found it here archive.org/details/the-flintstones_202304 and you can either download it via torrent or directly. On top of it it says that the movie is CC0 which means Public Domain. But that can’t really be, it’s only 29 years old....
My friend got the original galaxy fold and kept it until this year when she bought a fold5. She still has the original fold as a backup phone, too. I’m not sure longevity is necessarily a worry, by that metric.
Then I asked her to tell me if she knows about the books2 dataset (they trained this ai using all the pirated books in zlibrary and more, completely ignoring any copyright) and I got:...
Exactly. Immigration is hard, and very costly in more ways than just literally going to another place. Changing one’s government is, too, but in different ways that are distributed over the society it governs.
So if I was alone and without family or friends or language or a job to tie me to the place I live? Absolutely I would emigrate to somewhere more socialistic, not least because I’d be in a prime position to benefit from it, but also because I think it’s morally right to organize society in a way that protects its most vulnerable.
These days the only time I use reddit is when I’m searching for some obscure question and that’s the only place with an obvious answer. Otherwise, Lemmy is doing everything I needed reddit to do.
Everyone has priorities somewhere, so for some it’s a matter of “looking after one’s own first”, truly believing that other countries/people aren’t doing their part and not being willing to give their own (people’s) means up when they would still suffer consequences either way.
I think a lot of it is the “fake news” thing, where the people they respect are telling them that everyone else is lying, and they believe it. Once you’re in that mentality, it’s almost impossible to get out of it because anyone trying to get you to leave is one of the liars. People have to try to convince themselves they are wrong, try to convince themselves the other side has the right of it and to understand the other position, but they also have to choose that path for themselves in those worst cases.
Has anyone noticed how the total population of trans people tracks almost perfectly with adoption of industrialized economies? There must be a connection.
They are willing to let themselves and other people suffer just so they can feel they are right about something.
Some don’t think anyone’s going to suffer (or suffer more from one choice vs the other). They believe the people that say things like the ipcc are not just wrong but lying. And they often lack the tools to verify for themselves. This is worrying because they really have good reasons to think the things they do. Giving them more information doesn’t help because they have an internally good reason to think you’re lying (or being lied to, at least).
The people up top, who are saying the wrong things in the first place, who do have the tools to investigate their truth and are continuing to repeat them… I can’t understand their motivations as other than monumentally selfish.
It’s also possible it’s a hopelessly dated and archaic idiom that no modern speaker would recognize but was still fairly popular when that language course was first written, or something. It only takes a decade or two for a phrase to disappear from common usage sometimes.
Or maybe (since it references “czarist times” the phrase was already crazy dated and old but the Russian-speaking Englishman who wrote the course saw the phrase somewhere, thought it was funny, and so put it in. Wouldn’t put that past this world of ours either.
Oh I wasn’t by any means intending to cast shade. I was just speculating on possibilities, from the phrase being more popular inland to the phrase being unheard-of for various reasons.
I don’t speak Russian and have never been closer to Russia than Prijedor or Zagreb, so I am by no means an authority and I’m not trying to contradict anyone.

No, they mean when people just run a math problem with a 99% chance of nothing coming of it and no one caring so they can be paid by foreign investors the other 1% of the time.
I’m not sure if this is why, bit the color depends on how oxidized each atom of iron becomes, so if you have a mix of different oxidation levels, you would also have a mix of the colors
Dial Up. Yeah I know the sound and I know the time it took to load anything with. But it’s something I won’t ever miss having. I would much rather be on a 1MB connection if I had to choose between that or dial up ever again. I also hated how easy it was to be kicked off, if anyone called the phone, you were off it in...
On the other hand, I do kind of miss the episodic scifi like star trek TOS or TNG. These days they’re all 40-hour long stories instead of 20 half-hour-long stories.
