You must pick a point in human history before the 1950s to be spend the rest of your life in. What era and place would you choose?

You would still have the same age, gender, personality, skin color, etc. and you would be able to speak at least one local language and would know basic information of the era and place. Your family, social standing, and such would be randomly picked.

Quik,

1940, as there are crazy things that will be going on in the world of computer science (and science in general) over the course of the next few decades and that would be really cool to experience. Kind of sad though to not be alive once we achieve human-level artificial intelligence, would be interested in seeing how that will turn out. I would probably chose America, as I wouldn’t want to spend WW2 in Germany where I live in the present.

Alternatively I think I would very much enjoy visiting Ancient Greek, although I’m not too sure when would be the best time for that; maybe at the peak of Athen.

Quik,

Can you even to that now? I remember a few years back you could only have 1000 liked songs

Quik,

Good to know, thank you!

Quik,

Apart from the possibility of that being a serious mental problem: By the very definition we all wouldn’t.

Quik,

It probably would help, as Google couldn’t connect their advertising services that easily with YouTube, and both parties would have to be more independent.

Quik,

Generally I agree with the sentiment of the article, although I don’t get why OnlyOffice is called proprietary, as it’s licensed under the AGPL as far as I know…

Quik,

Das schmerzt; gute Arbeit!

Quik,

Tatsächlich war wahrscheinlich ein Riesenriesenentenangriff gemeint

Quik,

Great News!

Quik,

Why would you want desktop icons? I mean I get it, there were quite popular back in the day, but I don’t see how a big junky place of a desktop has any benefit

Quik,

Was an easy fight, wasn’t it

Quik, (edited )

I have to say, I do hate Google. But - and I think that’s what could be unpopular to say here - I do think Google develops some very usable, convenient and good products, it’s just I don’t like the company for how it deals with its customers.

Quik,

This could lead to more devices being waterproof xD

Quik,

No, but as far as I can tell, it’s a private company in the US (which is pretty bad for a VPN). Also, all of its features are closed-source. The encryption seems to be closed source. That should make you question their motives and integrity. And trust them not much more than Google or Facebook. For everything not privacy related, as their virtual cards and in a sense also phone numbers and email addresses (those could be private, but not using this service), this service seems fine.

Quik,

From how they’re presenting themselves on their website, I would also guess their payment methods aren’t private /anonymous at all. It seems like you could even be forced to use the Apple/Google integration to pay for your subscription (which just means you can’t really pay privately).

Also, VPNs that have own apps and don’t allow access via OpenVPN are a red flag. You don’t know what their apps are doing and they don’t give you any reason to trust them either.

Quik,

I honestly think deleting personal social media accounts regularly would be a great privacy measure, as I don’t think most people (myself included) have any clue how much they are identifiable because of their social media activity.

Quik,

German; but close enough.

Quik,

Thank you for your comment! I’ve seen other people mention Microsoft Surfaces too, but would obviously like to not use a device made by one of the very company whose operating systems I want to avoid. Another thing that kind of scared me are the 2 core CPUs in some of them (even the “higher” priced ones like the surface go 3), so how’s your performance with Fedora?

Quik,

Thank you for your recommendation, I will take a closer look at IdeaPad Flex devices, as they seem very promising. How is your battery life on Linux and what is stylus support like?

Quik,

Thank you for your recommendation! I’ve already found a used one roughly in my price range and will happily add this to my list of options.

Quik,

Yeah, I’ve also had that thought at some point. I would also like to first read/watch some reviews before buying, so I guess it’s best to wait a few more weeks or even months.

Quik,

That’s kind of my fear, because I really want to not have to use proprietary apps or Android at all.

Quik,

Yeah, that’s what makes it so difficult. Others have recommended the IdeaPad Flex series, but they don’t seem to have detachables

Quik,

Looks like a nice device, unfortunately not at all under 700€

Quik, (edited )

That sounds great! Could you tell me how you like the stylus and what’s battery life like? I’m also a bit curious of how big/clunky it feels compared to a real tablet, because the 14" screen is kind of keeping me away from it (I’m leaning towards the IdeaPad Duet 5 at the moment, which is comparably weak in performance for the same price, but has a detachable keyboard which would be more suited for school).

Quik,

Yeah, the problem there is that Lenovo seems to release new Duets without changing the name so it’s kind of difficult to choose a device.

Quik,

Macs/MacOS has enough problems, no reason to make anything up

Quik,

FYI There are also open source discord clients available:

  • Discordo is a nice CLI to use Discord
  • ArmCord: Full Open Source Discord client with themes, etc.
  • gtkcord4 & gtkcord 3: Both are simple GTK Clients for Discord

Third party clients are against Discord’s terms of service, so use at your own risk.

Quik,

*de facto, inhaltlich natürlich korrekt.

Quik,

I’ve always wondered how much that slows down GTK compared to a more native version to draw stuff…

Quik,

You’re right that default Android found on nearly all smartphones today is not that much better than iOS. There is the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) however, which means the base of Android is free and open source and therefore allows for lore privacy focused versions of Android to exist such as LineageOS, Graphene OS, Calyx OS or /e/ OS. This isn’t possible at all with Apple’s iOS and one can therefore even claim it to be worse than Android in that sense.

Quik,

This is a rare example of a situation in which an ad blocker would maybe have saved a life…

State of Signal on Linux phones

I’m toying with the idea of trying to get Linux on my Fairphone 3 running. But one thing that was lacking on my Pinephone back then was the lack of a good Signal client. There were one or two available, but they were clunky. I helped out with one or two tickets but I lacked the time to do more and now I lack the energy....

Quik,

There is Axolotl or Wayland, as far as I know.

Quik,

At the start of the show, he could have been autistic too…

Quik,

Now I have to imagine you standing in the store scanning ports just to get somewhat usable Wi-Fi :)

Quik,

Actually, Europe wouldn’t have stopped exploding to this very day.

Quik,

That is, indeed, the case.

Quik,

Schön, dass nicht nur mir das auffällt…

Quik,

I would recommend to switch as well, PopOS isn’t that actively developed at the team, because the team is currently developing its own desktop environment which isn’t out yet. Linux Mint is great for new users (especially from Windows) and supports all major desktop environments. If you don’t have anything against using the command line from time to time, both Debian and Fedora are great options, Debian isn’t corporate-run but Fedora gets faster updates.

Quik,

I could understand things not working if you’re still on kernel version 1 though :D

Quik,

How is Edge secure in any way? It isn’t even open source & and both Google (Chromium) and Microsoft add their code to it, so even if Chromium were more secure than Firefox, you could just normal Chromium, couldn’t you?

Quik,

*dont --force it, you mean.

Quik,

We’ll just hope it is.

Quik,

There’s a difference? /s

Quik,

Quik,

armseelig können wir als Wortwitz durchgehen lassen
