Papanca,

There is a - pretty dead - community, but maybe some of you could revive it: !coolwebsites

How often do you use "AI" to reply to your messages, if at all?

The recent chat bot advances have pretty much changed my life. I used to get anxiety by receiving mails and IMs, sometimes even from friends. I lost friendships over not replying. My main issue being that I am sometimes get completely stuck in a loop of how to formulate things in the best way to the point of just abandoning the...

Papanca,

I recognized this as ChatGPT, purely because of the enthusiastic greeting

Papanca,

And they also often start their text with copying your question

Papanca,

I agree and basically, it’s not a bug, it’s a feature

Papanca,

A good kaki Edit: sorry, persimmons they are called in english i think

Papanca,

Nothing, but my pets get a heart attack

Papanca,

Yes, you’re right, but at least they have a web app, so it’s not a total deal breaker. I think a linux version is in the works, but knowing Proton it can still take a long time before one will be available. I also know that their VPN linux version is pretty shaky for some people.

Papanca,

Lol, thanks. I have some perfectionist tendencies, but good to know i’m not missing something glaringly obvious!

Papanca,

I’ve been running a live distro and doing exactly that. So far, so good :-)

Papanca,

I have heard both sides; some people complained of issues with nvidia on linux, others said; nope, no problem whatsoever.

Papanca,

Yes, i’m switching to KDE too. One of the first things i do when installing anything, whether on my phone or pc, is taking a peak at the settings

Papanca,

So far, everything gets backupped automatically, but on top of this, i already am in the habit of backupping important documents by hand in files that don’t get synced. So, as soon as i’m editing important files, i backup them, on top of the sync folders. I will need to switch to manual backups anyway, since proton drive - which syncs automatically - is not yet available on linux, but they do have a web app where you can backup manually.

Papanca,

I should have clarified that i’m not copying all settings from all programs, just the ones that i use a lot and are important to me, from programs that i will have on linux as well. For instance, i already use libreoffice and will just copy the tweaks i made so as to not to reinvent the wheel.

As for disappointment; i have used Kubuntu in the far past, so it’s not like i know absolutely nothing about Linux, thankfully. In fact, when i ran the live KDE image, it was quite fun that many of the programs i used back then, still came with it, like Kate and the pdf reader and such.

Backups, good point! I already have everything important backupped on protondrive and a home server, but i will check how i can backup windows/settings; i do see two programs called Window recovery drive and Windows backup program, so will check out how that works and if that is what i would need. Thanks for your input!

Papanca,

Interesting, is it something like Syncthing? I will definitely check it out, thank you for the link!

Papanca,

Thanks for the list! Most points i already did and there are only two programs that not have an alternative, but i almost never use them. I will try to run them through Wine or something, and if it doesn’t work it would not be a big deal. Can’t wait to get rid of windows. I can’t remember why i left kubuntu behind and got back to windows in the first place.

Papanca,

It’s not brand new, but i don’t need it for gaming or anything major. Thank you for your recommendations, i will look into it!

Papanca,

Good points, hadn’t even thought about this, particularly the Wifi!

Papanca,

I haven’t used it yet, but apparently it’s not hosted by a third party and syncs between 2 computers in real time and encrypted.

Papanca,

Yes, that would not be a problem; i have a tablet, phone and i can borrow a laptop if needed.

Papanca,

KDE, thanks for the link :-)

Papanca,

Thanks, i already did that. Also, i don’t use MS Office, i use LibreOffice, so no surprises there :-)

Papanca,

I thought i was the only one who kept typing dots on anysoft :-)

Papanca,

I wonder if they have wives

Papanca,

They wished for that hundreds of thousands of years ago, so be careful what you wish for

Papanca,

I need sloths, hummingbirds, monarch butterflies, raccoons and orang utans in my life, please.

when will be your last time to vote for the "lesser of two evils"?

When will be your “this is the last fucking time I’m voting for the ‘lesser of two evils’, then I don’t care after that, let this country burn to the ground”? For me, this is basically it. This is last election I’m going for that " lesser of two evils" bullshit. After that I’m done. It’s just pointless. Let’s...

Papanca,

I will always vote (but i’m in europe)

How does attraction feel like to you, mentally, physically and emotionally?

It was sometime in early 2022 that I found myself reading a few romance novels. I remember being mildly annoyed about how most of the books had instant chemistry/attraction as part of the plot. Then I suddenly found myself wondering, how do I feel if and when I feel attraction? I think I have probably never felt instant...

Papanca,

I think it’s a spectrum, ranging from being completely asexual to the other end of the range. Also, i would guess that the mind plays a big role in it too. For instance, people who have a very romantic nature - way of looking at relationships - will probably have other thoughts, feelings and expectations than people who are, say, more down to earth. It’s probably a mixture of bodily sensations, personality (both yours and the other’s) and mental thoughts about it.

Also, whether someone is open to attraction or not.

I would say to not let anyone or any book tell you what and how you are supposed to feel. Trying to put labels on oneself or others is not helpful at all.

Papanca,

My issue with labels is that they can also be imprisoning in some way. If you say; i am this, then you might feel that there is something wrong if you don’t fit in it a 100% But if they help, then good :-)

Elephants give each other names — the 1st non-human animals to do so, study claims (www.livescience.com)

Name a famous elephant. Babar, perhaps? Or Dumbo? Memorable though these monikers may be to humans, they sound nothing like the names elephants give each other. If you’re an elephant, your name is something more like a low, rumbling sound, scientists say....

Papanca,

Yes, forpus name their chicks

Papanca, (edited )

That is so funny; i literally found this website and channel yesterday and i am studying how to make it from scratch! Basically, i am looking at several resources, just to get an idea of how it all works and comes together.

Would you - any of you - happen to know what fabric weight would be best for a toile/mockup sloper?

I know muslin is recommended, but i see several fabric weights. I’m guessing preferably on the ‘flimsy’ side?

Thank you for the encouragement!

Edit because i meant sloper, not a toile

Papanca,

Oh, thank you! Very helpful and i feel like this expands my options a lot! Particularly because i am in Europe and the naming of certain fabrics does not always match what is mentioned in other parts of the world. For instance muslin to us is an absorbent fabric with squares on it, which we used for cloth diapers, but in videos i see a very different type of fabric, almost like a lightweight canvas or something. I remember that dart video, i watched it quite a long time ago, but it was so useful to see how she manipulated a piece of paper to show the effect of darts. Back then, i was a complete novice and had no idea what darts were and what they were meant to do

Papanca,

Subscription wall

Papanca,

Which is what i used of course, and i still got the subscription wall

Papanca,

Even on Tor, if you use the clear web site provided in the link, yes, you will see the box asking for a subscription. You can click the x to get rid of it.

Ah, ok. I just noticed the popup. Of course i did click the link that was indicated in the post itself, not the title.

Google abandons “Web Environment Integrity” (simplifiedprivacy.com)

Google has abandoned the “Web Environment Integrity” API that was supposed to allow websites to only allow approved and verified browser environments. The plan would allow websites to reject browser or even OS modifications that were “unattested” for the purpose of supposedly stopping bots, piracy, ad-blocking, and other...

Papanca,

They will tweak the most unimportant detail and say; we listened to you, now take it!

Papanca,

You read the Three Body Problem, i see

Papanca,

The three phrases of kitties:

Let me in!

Let me out!

Give me fresh food, even though my bowl is still pretty full

Papanca,

They don’t need to say that; they will just sit on your papers or laptop, or stand right in front of the tv

Papanca,

I don’t know why you got downvoted, i completely agree with you. They really love fresh food and fresh water (those water fountains), it’s just their nature. It’s not that they are spoiled. Dogs for instance will also eat from a carcass, but wild felines only eat fresh

Papanca,

Yes, there were studies where it was proven that these sounds are actively being reinforced by human interactions; cats learn that this works

Papanca,

It was not a kiss, it was sexual assault

Papanca,

Yesterday.

And i make it a point to make sure i make everyone i meet feel heard and seen. So, i might wave at people collecting garbage, i make eye contact with the cassier en give them a warm smile, while wishing them a nice day. I might smile at random strangers in the street. I have had beautiful experiences doing this, and quite frequently people give me this startled look and then hesitantly smile back. And i do this sincerely, because i truly belief most people have a hard time already and i want to give them at least a nice moment in the day.

It makes life so much better. For people i meet and for myself as well.

Papanca,

Usually, the nervous people won’t make eye contact. And it’s not really an ‘in your face’ contact i make, i try to be a bit subtle about it, if that makes sense. I never had anyone react as if it was unpleasant. For the record, it’s not like i am this extravert person, i am very introverted and i had to learn this. But it was worth it.

TIL about this tool, the *Reinigungsschaber* ! (lemmy.world)

I had lost hope with my electric cooking plates. The white circles where completely hidden under a layer of diamond-grade burn residue that no amount of scrubbing with chemicals could even begin to remove. I found this 3€ scrapping tool and it’s amazing !!! Sorry, but I don’t have the before picture, believe me after 6...

Papanca,

I finished it and it picked up in the final couple of chapters, but i too still preferred Children of Time; that was maybe the most eye opening ‘what if’ about a completely believable alien species. I’ve read many SF books, but this one was the only one where i found it to be a totally convincing, completely different species.
