OceanSoap,

Have a fall? Call 0118 999 881 999 119 725… 3

OceanSoap,

I design substations for a living, and the major client I’m assigned to is a data storage Corp. This is… fascinating. Right now the big thing my client is switching to is “data cubes” to replace the miles-long structures needed to store data on regular servers. Very curious about how this will enable companies like my client to save massive amounts of space for their data centers

OceanSoap,

Lol, I read “cosmetology” instead of “cosmology” and for a second was thinking there was some sort of cosmetic student crisis happening.

OceanSoap,

Wow. That last one is super fucking cool. Lots of questions about longevity, but still, science is wild!

OceanSoap,

That was wild.

Crazy that it only last 1-2 years though. Would be worth it if it lasted 10. 100% would save up and pay 5k every 10 years to have this done.

OceanSoap,

Ah, only to an extent. Botox has been out for forever, and I still don’t see myself affording upkeep with how often it needs to be done.

OceanSoap,

Well, maybe continuously circling the roundabout *is my purpose for driving. Take that, Germany!

OceanSoap,

I probably wouldnt, unless I was with other people. But even then, my chances are slim.

I’d need something to boil water. And I’d need warm enough clothes. It will really start to suck when the bug spray runs out.

I’d do better than some friends in terms of positivity and determination, but only in that.

OceanSoap,

I traumatized myself by learning how brutal ant colonies are by reading Animorphs in 5th grade. Fucking brutal. I had nightmares about it.

OceanSoap,

Get enough of an emergency fund going that covers my rent and utilities for 6 months.

OceanSoap,

40k would wipe out the rest of my student loans and I’d be far, far better off.

OceanSoap,

All the Harry Potter movies, the twilight movies, the Magic Mike movies…

OceanSoap,

This is most likely the correct answer. Jay Is probably either a classmate she has a crush on, or a celebrity that she she has a crush on.

OceanSoap,

Same. My first bank account tin collage was through Wells Fargo. I got burned by all the ridiculous fees. Closed it down and never went back. This was in 2003.

OceanSoap,

Don’t you dare consider the nuance of any topic, political or otherwise.

OceanSoap,

It’s just as bad as reddit, just way less people in general.

OceanSoap,

I’m waiting in the longest line right now and this made me laugh. Thanks.

OceanSoap,

I’m a designer, which is a well-known profession, but I design substations, which almost no one I’ve run into has heard of.

Substations are like giant jungle-gyms for electricity. They’re a grouping of electric structures that transfer high-voltage electricity to low-voltage, or low voltage to high voltage. They’re a major part of our electricity distribution system. You drive by at least one every day, most likely.

I got into it by chance. Right place, right time. I went back to school and got my AS in drafting for industrial design and manufacturing. I applied to this job on accident, thinking it was for manufacturing, then when I was offered an interview, accepted it despite the mixup. Why not? They offered about double what other jobs were for a drafter, so I took it.

8 months into the job, a designer position opened up, so I interviewed for that and got the promption!

Door is still wide open, despite the general idea that drafters are becoming less of a demand. Based on my experience, they’re sorely needed, especially for civil jobs. Also I get paid higher than a friend of mine who got her masters in interior architecture (also a drafting/design gig), with just my AS. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. Totally worth it.

Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?

2020 was… truly unique. It was so hard to stay away from doom scrolling, and I (and many others) were pretty disillusioned by the sad fact that so much of our country legitimately supported the Orange Man. I didn’t get a wink of sleep the night of the election because I genuinely considered it to be a make or break decision...

OceanSoap,

Haley is literally a war monger. She stated she wanted us to get into 3 active wars, with China, Russia and Iran.

You would vote for the candidate who is most likely to start WW3???

OceanSoap,

Not voting Democrat this time around.

Not sure yet who I’m voting for, though.

OceanSoap,

My problem with scifi and movies is that most of them are scary/horror. Not so much the case recently, but I remember walking the scifi section being mashed in with the horror section.

OceanSoap,

How many beautiful people do we see destroying themselves with filler and lip injections? Beautiful people can absolutely have low self esteem. The self view isn’t always rational.

OceanSoap,

You can know others find you beautiful without thinking so yourself. It’s a hard thing to understand if you haven’t experienced it, but it’d along the same lines of someone thinking they’re fat when they’re 20lbs underweight.

OceanSoap,

Best Christmas movie, hands-down.

OceanSoap,

The eyelashes one kills me. So many women have them, now, with no idea the amount if damage they do to actual eyelashes. Lots of these women will never be able to not wear falsies, because all of their natural ones will eventually fall out.

OceanSoap,

The issue I have with keto is that unless you have an absolute will of steel, all that weight instantly comes back once your carb intake ups. If you want to maintain that keto body, you’ll have to be on keto for life.

Most if us can’t do it for life.

OceanSoap,

Planking was great, shouldn’t have gone away. Need more planking.

OceanSoap,

I watch YouTube during work, so that. My Google drive account. And now lemmy replaced reddit.

I still go on reddit, but only like once every couple of weeks now.

OceanSoap,

Tim Dillon Podcast. Dry, east coast type humor where he goes over and comments on current happenings. I stopped listening for a while once his producer/part cohost parted ways with him, but I’ve been getting back into it again. His rants and tangents always make me laugh.

Tooth And Claw. Hosted by a wildlife biologist, and his friend and brother, they go over animal attacks. All sorts of animal attacks. They have great chemistry, and I love that they tell you how to best survive if you get attacked by said animal. I don’t know if it’s morbid fascination or what but I can’t get enough.

I’m scared shitless of bears now though. I mean, they were always scary, but now I know all the ways in which they can kill you. :(

OceanSoap,

Hmm, have you read Clan of the Cavebear? It’s an older series, but set in the timeline you discuss here. You should check it out, it’s a good read.

OceanSoap,

It would probably work better as a comedy series, but I’d love to read or watch a story about a group of three conspiracy-believing idiots who manage to sneak aboard a scientific ship headed to antartica to try and prove that the earth is flat. However, disaster strikes and the ship sinks just off the coast, only for the three idiots and one scientist to survive. They have to band together to survive the aric, and end up losing their way… and discover that the world is actually flat when they run into a giant wall of ice that extends farther up than anything could exsist and just never ends.

The main character is actually the scientist who is grappling with the idea that these three idiots he has to deal with are actually right, and he’s fallen for the round earth propaganda. Maybe they run into the actual scientists who help maintain the lie that the earth is flat. I dunno.

But I like the idea of it.

OceanSoap,

Yes, once I tried kerrygold, I never went back.

OceanSoap,

I’m one of those who can’t. Temptation to nap is too strong. Also I have that procrastination issue where I’d rather be cleaning the floor with a toothbrush than do work, so it’s hard not to do housechores when I hit a wall in my day.

On top of that, I need more face-to-face socialization. I just do. I need to go somewhere that’s not my house every day or I spiral and it’s not pretty.

OceanSoap,

Yes, we are in a warming period.

OceanSoap,

What’s gross about it? It’s just skin. You have it too. Are you grossed out by your own skin? Why is face and arm and hand skin not gross, but belly and chest skin is? Is wearing shorts gross because you see leg skin?

OceanSoap,

I won’t eat onions of any kind. It’s a hard no.

I crave hot pockets. I can eat 4 in one sitting. I just don’t buy them anymore because if they’re in the house I binge on them. I eat much more healthy now, but if the negative consequences weren’t there, I’d eat nothing but hot pockets and fast food.

I’m a nail biter. I’ve managed to curb the habit enough to have pretty nails most of the time, but every now and then I succumb to the habit and have to regrow them. So annoying.

OceanSoap,

Home baked kale chips.

Dry off the kale, rip the leaves into bite-sized bits and toss with 1tblspoon olive oil, the add some salt, pepper, garlic powder and chilli powder (if you like a bit of heat). Then, arrange kale flat on a baking pan. Bake for 20 minutes at 300f. Let them cool for 10 minutes.

So delicious. Perfectly crispy and salty.

OceanSoap,

Ohh, a bit of honey is a great idea!

OceanSoap,

Would you mind sharing pictures? I’ve been getting massages because of my back and neck issues from side sleeping

OceanSoap,

I’d be pissed too. They didn’t just change her skin tone, they completely took her out of the photo. For models who are sometimes paid in exposure, this is like yanking that pay away from her. Whatever photoshop is done, she needs to at least look like it’s her for her to be able to get the benefits from doing the work.

But even models who are paid money, there should be laws against making them look like someone completely different, in terms of the brand that they work for.

And that designer is a pos for sharing that photo, even if a fan did send it to him as “fan art”. Beyond the face change being in bad taste, he’s a professional, so he should be promoting the actual model who walked for him.

OceanSoap,

Lol. What are you watching?

OceanSoap,

No, you throw a load into the washer and push a magic machine that sucks up the floor dirt for a half-hour and then drive your speed carriage to a plethora of stores for two hours to pick up supplies. Then you come home and put your supplies in the magic ice box that is powered 24/7, throw your laundry into the dryer, and check on the dinner in the box that slow-cooks your food without any stirring needed.

Then, instead of going to bed, you turn on all the lights and enjoy 5 hours of free time, where you can see perfectly fine because magic.

I’m sorry, I wish I could fling you back to that time to give you a reality check. Do we work too much? Yes. Do we work more than midevil peasants did? Absolutely not.

OceanSoap,

Well, it would be bad to admit that it was a failure.

OceanSoap,

Drugs going through that now. I took some stuff in college. No way would I touch it today. Fentinyl in everything.

OceanSoap,

At this point, I don’t even care about the user tracking. I just don’t want to sit through unskippable ads anymore. Especially when it’s the same ad over and over again.

OceanSoap,

Plus, no way would it ever stay at that price. Nothing ever does. The only service I pay for now is spotting, and that’s just to have ad-free music on my half-hour drive to work.
