Oh nice this is like half my wishlist in one go!

Shoutout to botsin.space/ for keeping my feed at maximum fuzziness.

what is a skill you wish you had, and why?

Ok, I might as well go first: I wish I could draw. Not at the level where I could make photorealistic portraits, but I’ve always been envious of those who are able to scetch something together in a few minutes that perfectly captures what they want to convey. Sometimes words aren’t enough to express what I want to say, and...

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

All kinds of things really although mostly they’re on my list to learn so I’ll have them one day. Tatting might be my main one for 2024.

(Edit: Forgot the “why”. Mostly because it’s come up twice lately here on Lemmy and I feel left out while other people are making pretty lace)

I do wish I could learn to draw a bit better, to play the piano, and to speak multiple languages. But realistically I don’t have that kind of time so have to go with things that are quicker to pick up!

I have a really out of the loop question that will probably make me sound like a troll, but really I’m just old and out of the loop:

What exactly are the unique features of Tumblr? as far as I recall it was just a blogging site with support for specific post formats, right? Did it get more complicated than that?

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Nice! I won’t get too excited yet because it’s a big project but if they can make even a halfway decent app it would really change things up.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Most recent post there was 2 hours ago. You might have it blocked or something.

Just a nice easy Christmas and New Year, at home just me and my partner, no responsibilities, no social obligations, cozy pyjamas, playing games and relaxing together and generally living actual real life for a couple weeks instead of the constant treadmill.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Apparently our modest Christmas dreams are downvote-worthy to someone. But it sounds pretty perfect to me! :D

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

There probably is an official term, but “bad communicator” also works.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Everyone says the same thing. I am going to do it, just rereading some of the older ones that I’ve not had chance to in years and then I think it’ll naturally go that way.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

You can do it, I believe in you!

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I’m sick also, think that’s why I’ve been looking at my list, as a way to live vicariously through Future Healthy Me. Plenty more cold winter evenings to come, anyway, there’s no rush.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Sounds chill!

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

“Make it to 40th birthday” is also on my list so I can relate. We can do this!

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

I’m just a coward. But that’s why it’s on the list :D

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Ooh that’s a good one

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

One for everyone’s list there I reckon. Good luck!

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

On one hand this makes me sad for you, because snow is excellent. But on the other that does mean you live somewhere nice and warm, and as I sit here rolled up in my electric blanket it doesn’t sound so bad.

I hope you get to not only see snow, but experience the satisfying cronch of frolicking in an unspoiled patch :D

How did Lemmy World become the default instance?

World was already the biggest by far when I first started lurking back in July, and it’s just getting more dominant. Before, there was quite some diversity in the distribution of generic communities, but nowadays the vast majority of posts that reach the top are from over there....

I joined .world when there were only about 100 of us (was trying to find a nice small server to settle on, so much for that!), and rolled up my sleeves and went full-time tech support for like 2 weeks to help with the influx. So from that pov:

  • When the Reddit exodus started (slightly earlier than people had anticipated), .world was one of the only instances that didn’t require a proper application to join.
  • There was a bug where acceptance emails weren’t being delivered to Gmail addresses (probably some others too but for obvious reasons Gmail was noticed first). That meant people waiting for their applications to be accepted on other servers didn’t realise they had been. As well as this some people were just impatient waiting in general so gave up on their original instance choice and joined .world instead.
  • Other instances also started to close registrations completely due to not being able to handle the scaling. World wasn’t handling it great but Ruud specifically announced he wouldn’t be closing signups, which is one of the reasons it became the default recommendation while everything was on fire.
  • There was a thread tracking how quickly we were growing, I remember us celebrating 1000 users and then a couple weeks later 100,000! And that was kind of exciting so I can’t blame people for wanting to be part of it.

The best part is, I was the one who reported the Gmail thing to Ruud after seeing the admins of another instance had figured out a fix. I remember saying it was good we’d noticed it now, before the influx “next week” (ie Reddit’s scheduled meltdown). Turned out, he had no idea that was about to happen at all and the timing of setting up .world was just a total coincidence! 😆

Edit: This was only like six months ago and recounting the tale to all you whippersnappers is making me feel like an old grandma telling tales of the war.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Little did you know startrek.website was gonna become the coolest instance of all!

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly it’s fine. I’ve moved a few times and the first time it was a bit sad, but once you realise it’s like five minutes later and you’re continuing the conversation you were having on your old account with all the same people on your new account the actual historical record suddenly seems a lot less important than the inherent coolness of what just happened :D

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Oh wow yeah the “I’m going to destroy your server” guy. I wonder what happened to him.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Probably one of the mobile apps can do it. But easiest way is just to visit /communities, it should default to the local list.

startrek.website/communities for example

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Same, I follow a search result there sometimes but essentially just logged out there, signed up here, and that was that. The Reddit Days seem like another lifetime now.

  • £80 would pay for a Steam page for my little indie game thus fulfilling a lifelong dream
  • £200 would pay for Christmas which is always a big money stress
  • £500 would let me get some much needed dentistry done and remove that worry
  • £1000 would give me a decent emergency fund to reduce stress in general
  • £10,000 would be the point where I could feel more independent, maybe even get a car
  • £100,000 would let us move somewhere that isn’t totally isolated from civilization
TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Hah, thanks, appreciate that! It’s all good, I’m saving up bit by bit. Just can’t quite justify the whole cost at once, you know? But I’ll get there, same as with everything else.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

It’s really not very exciting, it’s just a minimalist little city builder thing. More of a “prove I can make and release a game” type project than anything that’s gonna make me famous! Learning Godot engine at the same time which has been half fun, half frustrating as hell :D

(recently started a devlog channel so if you really are interested, this is me, but there’s not much there yet)

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

…I can’t believe you’ve done this. Holy crap, thank you!

Honestly don’t even know what to say to this. I guess I better get designing a Steam page!

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Whyyyy would you say this

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

TIL I’m a fingertip gripper

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t even have big hands, just regular lady-hand sized. I still don’t really get the palm thing, just tried it and it feels so weird! Maybe depends on the shape of the mouse too, since some can be quite a lot taller than others.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

With our increased accuracy and feather-light touch we will take over the world!

Or, judging by this thread so far, maybe we already did…

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

I am one with my bookshelves. Unfortunately the Steam Deck hasn’t fared well.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Looks good, thanks for the heads up!

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

You’re fine from .world, we’re still on 0.18.5

Why do people hate on mobile games, call them "not real games" and mock them, when some mobile-exclusive games are the best games I've played?

The Infinity Blade or Minigore series, for example, or anything made by Illusion Labs. These games are genius and most consoles don’t even have a touch screen or utilise it well like some smartphone games do....

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

People just like to dunk on things to make themselves feel better. And this can be especially a thing in gaming because lots of gamers are badly-adjusted and desperately need to feel better. It’s nothing really to do with mobile games specifically at all, you see the same thing with anything outside of the very narrow window of “real” games ie the games these people happen to be into.

It’s one thing to have a preference, it’s quite another to look down on other people for having a different one. We’re all just choosing to spend our time staring at pixels on a screen.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Monkeys, and old people who never learned it! My grandma can just about manage to call me on WhatsApp but sometimes I’ll try and demonstrate basically anything else and she genuinely can’t see the difference between gestures I’m using, or which parts of the app are interactive or not.

Same in gaming. She saw me playing WoW once in about 2008 and I remember her being genuinely confused about how I could possibly tell what was my character and what was everything else. Even though, you know, your character is always in the middle of the screen. Just couldn’t grasp it no matter how long she sat and watched!

Bless 😅

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

That wasn’t really OP’s question though. I’m not a fan of mobile games either, mostly for the same reasons as you but also tbh just because I don’t like using my phone for much when I could get a better experience on a bigger screen.

But “I have some problems with the choices of the mobile gaming industry as a whole” is a very different statement to “lol mobile loser why don’t you try some real games?”

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

It’s for your own good. Trust him.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

So it’s not everyone you’ve had sex with, it’s just that everyone there is part of the group? I choose to believe it’s only the ones I’m still friends with.

We all have a nice catch up and then head home?

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Ooh yay, most of us LOVE escape rooms

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Such is life. Least I went out having an adventure with friends.

…and at least they won’t live to have any new adventures without me.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

This sounds mint and I’m sad I’m too solodev to make it.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Today is most certainly not the day, as I have covid and am mostly just sleeping. But thank you for believing in me lol

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, just don’t get a job with long hours and don’t have kids and you’re probably all good.

Looking for a PeerTube instance for game devlogs.

I have a crafts channel on makertube.net already but would prefer to spread myself around in case one server goes down. Also tbh I'm not even sure devlogs would count as "making" anyway.

Tried the instance finder on the PT homepage but it's pretty useless so if anyone knows where is stable and welcomes this kind of content I'd appreciate it! Thanks.

@peertube

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

For anyone reading this thread in the future:

  • A couple of devloggers are already on diode.zone although at time of writing that instance wasn’t taking new signups
  • I did get a couple of DMs about invite-only instances too, which seemed legit and stable enough but they just weren’t for me
  • In the absence of other compelling instances, I checked with the admin of MakerTube and they confirmed gamedev counts as “making”. So I just stuck with there in the end and we’ll see how it goes🤷‍♀️
