What really grinds my gears - literally - is having to have two sets of sockets because America. It’s really gets annoying when you lose your 10mm socket and the other one isn’t quite right, but you can’t work out is 18/32s is close enough and then you bust a nut.
Huh, even as a young child in Australia I kind of was aware sesame street was from a rougher area, although safe. Wonder how I clocked that even though it was never explicit
I’m a week late on rent due, I only paid half, I had to call all my credit card companies and utilities to tell them what’s going on. And now my check engine light turned on because the bastard is misfiring. My wife lost her dad which fucked us both up due to missing a ton of work, and I don’t know what to do. I’m tired...
Look to be fair I am self employed and always have been, but even so, today I don’t feel like going to work at all, I am totally exhausted. I am going though - because if I don’t go, I won’t have stock for the end of the week and customers come from a fair distance to see me, and if I don’t have what they want they will be pissed, and my business will go to shit.
Agree it’s probably bullshit, just a pattern. It only resonated with me because it seems to track with my sentiment, but I have little hope that it’s about to get shit and get better.

I lost my phone the other day. That sucks. But what really sucked is when I went and got a new Sim, chucked it in one of my old shitty phones, and then activated the new Sim with my company as a replacement, those motheruckers took 4 whole days to activate my new Sim.
It said it would only take 1-3 hours.
I had days wasted on the line with them, I knew they didn’t transfer it correctly and they just kept saying “please wait longer”. Like. What the fuck is waiting more going to do.
What was worse, is without access to SMS, I couldn’t port out to a new provider, couldn’t login to Facebook as backup messaging, couldn’t transfer money from my bank. Every step of the way I was fucked by 2fa and my douchebag phone company could not give a single shit.
Fuck you amaysim.
As soon as it came good I ported away from them within the hour. I really opened up my eyes to how much we rely on SMS communication these days for auth.
I feel like you have Apple, Samsung, Pixel as the big 3 (in the western world)
Then it’s Xiaomi, OPPO (and it’s subbrands), Motorola and maybe Nokia which are all just “cheaper alternatives” or as I think people think of them “android”
Then you have your niche phones like fairphone etc.
I see more tv ads for pixels than I do for galaxy phones.
The guy who runs Generation Squeeze says building more homes isn’t enough to lower prices, because most people buying houses are already property owners. Property owners can either sell their current house to get a load of cash, or borrow against it to get a load of cash. Either way, they can pay a lot for their next property....
There’s no reason why buying or selling a house needs to be any harder than renting a house. The default should be owning your home and paying it off. Just like the default is owning your car. Sure, you rent a car on holidays or if you need something very short term, but you buy a car if you need it more than that.
So there are two things we need to do:
Through taxation make multiple dwelling ownership a thing of the past. Plus ban all corporate ownership of residential houses. The only exception to this rule is new builds until they are sold to a private buyer.
Transferability- if you need to move and buy a new house, your old property goes into a no reserve auction pool run by the government. This same pool is probably where you get that new house you are looking for.
Together these should bring the market down to sane levels and also create greater variability in house values - really prestigious properties will continue to sell for more, but bog standard suburban sprawl would be affordable and we would no longer need rentals.
Housing is considered affordable if it’s repayments and maintenance is 30% of your income.
So a median income in your area should see a median house price at around that. I did a bit of maths and it’s around a 4x multiplier given current interest rates in my area.
Also consider that everyone needs a home, so median is not the cheapest available.
In my suburb the multiplier last year was 7.5x, and I just did a check and the cheapest available housing listed is 6.5x
So you are totally right, there needs to be a massive shift
Ironically, that was my exact experience in the current system. The landlord student lived upstairs, demanded rent, and kicked people out on a whim. I like the other person’s suggestion about a co-op
I like it, at first I thought “hmm. This breaks the rules of the no corporate ownership” but then realised that so long as there is transparency / a special co-op structure where they can be sure you only own the one property it’s totally workable.
