Matt,

I have not experienced that, but have you tried the Skip silence in audio feature? It does a good job removing pauses in audio which would hopefully solve the problem you are experiencing.

New phone with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus: should I still buy a screen protector?

Basically the title, I received a new price with a significant price tag (at least for me). My previous ones I didn’t care much so they weren’t protected. Given that I’d like to keep this one in good shape I’d like to know your experiences: does it still make sense to buy screen protectors nowadays? If so, also on newer...

Matt,

I’m very careful with my phones, but I still use screen protectors for added protection. It costs less than $10 for a decent tempered glass screen protector. I find tiny micro scratches from everyday use annoying, so it’s worth it to me.

Matt,

I would stick with one of the open source apps. Thunder is my favorite, but Voyager and Eternity are good as well.

Matt,

I have a ThinkPad X12 that supports Linux well. The pen works fairly well with Xournal++. I don’t use it that often because I prefer a traditional laptop form factor, but it’s great if you like the Surface style design.

Matt,

Because they get an extra $200 per upgrade to a usable amount, while getting to advertise the lower price. And the low specs force early upgrades for the people who purchase the base model. As always, it’s about the money.

Matt,

Same. It may lack encryption that many look for, but I have accepted that email is too old to ever be truly secure. Most email is either coming from, or going to services provided by big tech companies anyway. I prefer an open, fully standards compliant email service over a locked down service that provides minimal additional security.

What's an alternative to Spotify that doesn't play you the same fucking songs over and over?

I am in an intense love-hate relationship with Spotify. It makes good mixes for me, I have found a lot of great bands that way. BUT IT KEEPS REGURGITATING THE SAME SONGS IN THERE. I know about Song Radios and Artist Radios, so please don’t recommend those. Smart Shuttle doesn’t cut it, either....

Matt,

Even as a primarily Android user, I agree. I have tried most music streaming services at this point and Apple Music has been the best for helping me discover music. Most others play it too safe with the algorithm and only play music I already like.

Another plus is Apple Music is one of the last remaining music platforms that is not trying to shove podcasts down my throat.

Matt,

Great! You don’t even need to install any drivers. It just works.

Mozilla Senior Director of Content explained why Mozilla has taken an interest in the fediverse and Mastodon (techcrunch.com)

"the company looked at the history of social media over the past decade and didn’t like what it saw… existing companies that are only model motivated by profit and just insane user growth, and are willing to tolerate and amplify really toxic content because it looks like engagement… "

Matt,

Those donations cannot be used for Firefox development due to the structure of Mozilla.

Matt,

Firefox is part of the for-profit Mozilla Corporation. Donations go to the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation. Even though Mozilla Corporation is owned by Mozilla Foundation, donations cannot be transferred to it since it is still legally a for-profit business. The funds donated to Mozilla Foundation are used for advocacy work.

Matt,

The $1600 MacBook Pro only has 8GB of RAM. That is completely unacceptable.

Matt,

how can I find out if it will run on my old Samsung Galaxy S7?

It won’t. GrapheneOS only supports recent Pixel phones.

Matt,

The apps on IzzyOnDroid are built by the original developers and likely signed with the same key as the version on Google Play. As a result, Google is able to update them. Apps in the official F-Droid repository are signed by F-Droid. As a result, the keys are different and won’t be updated by the version from Google.

Matt,

These are Android games from the Play Store, so even if Google shuts down this Windows support, they likely won’t provide refunds because users will still have access to the games on Android devices. They offered refunds for Stadia purchases because the purchased games could not be played anywhere after they shut it down.

I totally forgot how terrible a non-ad-free YouTube experience is

So I’ve been using youtube ad blockers since pretty much when ad blocker extensions were first available. Lately though I’ve been getting hit more and more with these messages that YT was sending out every 5 or so videos telling me that adblockers aren’t allowed. No problem, just gotta wait 5 seconds to x it out and then...

Matt,

I agree that Kagi isn’t great from a privacy perspective. But in regards to clearing cookies, they do have a session link feature that uses a token to avoid the need to sign in all the time.

Matt,

It’s great and the main reason I first started using it. There is a database export and import option which transfers nearly everything. It transfers subscriptions, settings, history, etc. I think the only thing that doesn’t transfer is downloaded episodes.

Matt,

I started using Pocket Casts last year when it was $10 per year. This year they first raised it to $15 per year, and now it is $40 per year. That is too much in my opinion. I’ve had enough with services that nearly always get worse, so I am now using AntennaPod. It is a free open source Android app that doesn’t need accounts or subscriptions.

Matt,

Google Podcasts does, but background play is a premium feature on YouTube Music.

Matt,

If you only listen to podcasts on your phone, I can highly recommend AntennaPod. It is free and open source. I have been using it for around 6 months now since Pocket Casts increased from $10 to $40 per year.

Matt,

It is free for most features, but the paid subscription is now $40 per year.

Matt,
Matt,

For gaming, it works out of the box. You don’t need to install additional drivers. The other drivers are only necessary when dealing with things like machine learning and AI. They don’t offer better gaming performance and will only introduce problems similar to Nvidia.

Matt,

Considering Microsoft is supposedly releasing a new revision of the Xbox Series X and S next year without disc drives, I wouldn’t get your hopes up. Given the direction the industry is moving, I wouldn’t be surprised if the PS6 and whatever Microsoft calls the next Xbox are all digital only.

Matt,

I would use a spreadsheet for that. It will add the numbers for you. I use LibreOffice on the computer, but OnlyOffice and Collabora Office are good mobile apps. They are all open source and store data locally on the device, so they are good from a privacy perspective as well.

Matt,

I used Namecheap for several years and was happy with it, but the numerous price increases finally pushed me to switch. I recently decided on Porkbun after the many positive reviews I read online. It is affordable and has a very clean interface that doesn’t constantly nag me about purchasing other services. I’m really liking it so far.

Matt,

If DNS is separate, the registrar doesn’t matter and I can move to a cheaper one whenever I want. It’s a lot more time consuming if I have to move all my DNS records as well.

Matt,

This was a false rumor. Asus has issued a press release confirming that the Zenfone line will continue.

Matt,

They have 3 years of operating system updates and 5 years of security updates. Source

Matt,

Vague and unpopular opinion incoming:

Despite the Steam Deck being better than the Switch at nearly everything, there is still something that keeps pulling me back to the Switch. The only things I can think of is how much thinner and lighter it is combined with the simplified software. I’m not saying the Switch software is good, because it’s not. It’s slow despite how slimmed down it is. Meanwhile the Steam Deck is much faster, smoother, and has many more features. But the Steam Deck still just feels clunky compared to the Switch. It might be due to the Steam Deck using a full desktop operating system with a modified UI while the Switch OS is made solely for playing games. Despite being very well designed and using optimized software, something about the Steam Deck makes it feel like a tech demo rather than a handheld game console. I still really like the Steam Deck, but I keep getting pulled back to the Switch.

Put simply: Weight aside, the Steam Deck is significantly better at every individual factor than the Switch. But there is still something about the final product of the Switch that I enjoy using more than the Steam Deck.

Matt,

NextCloud Contacts supports syncing using the CardDAV standard. iOS supports this natively and it can be used on Android with the DAVx5 app. There are also desktop apps that support it as well such as Thunderbird.

Matt,

It’s very anti competitive and monopolistic if you ask me

I don’t disagree, but while I would love having full Firefox on iOS, the one positive of the current situation is that it is the only thing keeping Google from a complete browser monopoly. Firefox marketshare is insignificant, and without WebKit on iOS devices, Chromium browsers would make up 95% of the browser market. I think that would be worse overall in the long-term than iPhone users being stuck with Safari skins.

Looks like finaly there is a decent alternative to Google Photos (stingle.org)

When I was looking to replace my google tools, I couldn’t find an easy to to alternative Google Photos. Things that were suggested like immich or Synology or ente required some level of technical know how or dedicated hardware. I ended up buying a Synology drive but I have issues with loading images/videos (it’s extremely...

Matt,

Ente is another option that I have been using for almost 2 years now. It’s end-to-end encrypted and open source with an app on F-Droid. There have been a lot of updates over the last year that have significantly improved the experience using the app.

Any alternatives to Google Photos?

I’m starting my degoogling journey (mostly looking into the various options at hand) and I was wondering what hood alternatives to Goohle Photos is there? I’m specifically wondering about a service that would double both as a cloud storage and a gallery with a timeline and such. But currently it’s only cloud storage backup...

Matt, (edited )

I have been using ente for around two years now and it has been working well. It’s not perfect, but has been improving quickly. Your photos are end-to-end encrypted so you are the only one who can access them. The app is also open source and available on F-Droid which is awesome. The prices aren’t the best, but privacy isn’t free. You either need to pay for it, or put the time and effort into hosting it yourself like Immich or Nextcloud. Ente does have a 1 year free trial with 1GB of storage to test it out.

Edit: After rereading your post, I saw you wanted general cloud storage as well. Maybe give Filen a try. It is also end-to-end encrypted and open source. It doesn’t have any photo specific features like albums since it is a generic cloud storage service, but it does have a photos tab to view your uploaded photos.

Apple TV vs Firestick.

So. I just bought a new telly and to my surprise, not, the OS is rather bad and has very limited amount of apps. Therefore I’ll invest further in either Apple TV or the Firestick. Anyone got any recommendations, tips or hot takes on this? Which has more adds, and can it be blocked via DNS? Further read that Firestick could be...

Matt,

I recommend Roku to people who don’t want to pay for an Apple TV because the UI is very simple and easy to use. It’s just an app grid. My parents weren’t able to figure out how to use Fire TV or Android/Google TV because it throws too much at them making it difficult to find what they are looking for. I also dislike that a lot of the content recommendations are for services I don’t pay for, which makes them useless and nothing but ads.

Matt,

If actual Hitler worked on a project should we all just use that project even though Hitler made it?

It’s called Volkswagen, one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world.

Matt,

This is the FOSS community and neither Sync nor Boost are open source.
