Lem453,

Which shows have you liked?

Lem453,

Enshittification is the norm for all for profit endeavours. Exceptions to this are exceedingly rare and usually just a matter of time rather than truly being an exception.

Lem453,

To be fair, an app for Samsung TVs would be great. Currently you need a complicated work around to get it working.

Lem453,

You install it then go to IP:8096. That doesn’t work?

Lem453,

I recently got a hostinger (Titan mail) account as well with a custom domain. So far I just use it to sebd notification email (hard drive failure, ups activation etc).

Works quite well. Not sure if I’ll migrate my phone email there but I’m glad I at least started using a custom domain

Lem453,

I was using nexcloud since it first released. Just recently switched to seafile. Way faster and more reliable for this.

Lem453,

Most people that have password managers are already using different passwords for each website. Usually randomly generated. What’s the difference between that and a passkey?

Lem453,

thanks! thats certainly useful. I’m just starting out. I’m sure everyone looks for the same thing (make sure the lights work even when the hub is down) so maybe it was too obvious to include in the description of the product.

Thanks for your help!

Lem453,

You migrated to a closed source for profit app to get away from the enshittification of streaming companies?

You don’t believe Plex will go down a similar path?

Lem453,

I’ve been rocking an ali express mini PC since 2017, started with pfsense for a year and ditched it when the devs had multiple public tantrums. Opnsense ever since then. It’s been rock solid and super stable since. Super happy I went with it!

Lem453,

US gives tax credits for any taxes you paid to your resident country. You therefore only pay the taxes if US taxes are higher than your resident country, which is almost never case. So really you just have to file US taxes not actually pay anything more.

Lem453,

I run proxmox, then an alpine VM which has all my docker containers.

I do this so that I have the flexibility to run more vms if needed

What is the best linux alternative to OneNote?

I’ve no problem with using LibreOffice for most of my document needs, but i haven’t found a good substitute for microsoft’s OneNote yet. I mainly use it to plan my RPG games and it helps a lot. What alternatives are there for organizing notes on linux, with similar features to those that OneNote provides?

Lem453,

Synching works but if you have a server, Obsidian live sync is fantastic and seamless.

Lem453,

I only use gnu aquaducts. Mine are arch btw.

Lem453,

Look into self hosting

Setup seafile for normal dropbox like functionality and immich for photogallerly.

In the end , after alk rhe effort to trick Google, all your shit aill still be on google.

MiniPCs are quite cheap now on Alibaba or Amazon etc. Wait for a sale on a large HD abd you’re good to go.

There should be a plugin that replaces the actual YouTube video with an embedded mpc or VLC player that streams the video like this on the website itself

Lem453,

Wait starfield works on SD? I thought it was too slow. Has there been a new patch?

Lem453,

I can’t believe they didn’t create any mods for BF, could easily have been like Skyrim in terms of longevity. People would have added full on trading and fleet mods like the old school Syd Meyers games. What a waste of dev time to create so much potential and justet it die.

Open hardware single board computer server recommendations?

Hi, I am looking for a SBC to self host stuff on. I would like it to be somewhat open hardware (manufacturer provides schematics and drivers are open source). Which is why I initially wanted to buy a banana-pi router but after reading a post in this /c/ I found that mainline linux support is fairly rare in these arm/riscv SBCs....

They will find a way to destroy your credit on case you had any hope of purchasing anything with a mortgage \ loan in the next 7 years

Lem453,

The full Harvard CS50 course is available on YouTube: youtu.be/8mAITcNt710?si=rTa1zOkY2REnlXDe

This is the course all programmers have to take before they get to take the real programming course. The purpose is to introduce programming concepts in a way that essentially anyone who is interested will be able to understand. The instructor is fantastic.

Not exactly geared towards 8yo but if you have the time and inclination, you could go through some of these videos to see how the topics are presented and then try to introduce those topics yourself to your child. Or at least look for resources that introduce them like the comment above talking about scratch.

Or better yet, maybe you both do these lectures together and learn the fundamentals of programming without getting bogged down in a specific language or with specific syntax. I’d bet that will become a core memory for any child.

What do you think of framework and their methods? (frame.work)

We are not sustainableAnd neither is any other device maker. This industry is full of “feel good” messaging, but generates 50 million metric tons of e-waste each year. We believe the best way to reduce environmental impact is to create products that last longer, meaning fewer new ones need to be made. Instead of operating on...

What are some FOSS programs that you think are a far better user experience than their counterparts? (sh.itjust.works)

I used Plex for my home media for almost a year, then it stopped playing nice for reasons I gave up on diagnosing. While looking at alternatives, I found Jellyfin which is much more responsive, IMO, and the UI is much nicer as well....

Lem453,

Please post on lemmy! I really liked seeing the devs give updates on Reddit.

An open source platform feels completely natural for a project like jellyfin!

Lem453,

Put your music on jellyfin, listen via github.com/jmshrv/finamp

Then enjoy your self holsted life:)

Lem453,

Don’t feel bad. Nearly all the critical systems for computers I generally represent at least 1 person’s (sometimes many peoples) life work. You can’t possibly understand every aspect of everything program your computer uses.

I suspect there is not a single person in the world that fully understands every aspect of GRUB, SSH and systemd. There is simply too many fine details in these things to understand everything.

No need to feel bad. Your biggest power is the one you take for granted: your ability to Google and educate yourself when needed. Many people can’t do that effectively.

Lem453,

Also remember that you can’t lose weight in a specific part of your body. As you lose weight, your body chooses where the fat is reduced. No exercise can target fat in a specific area. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.

Should note that working on the underlying muscle might help certain areas look less fat but that effect is negligible compared to finding a regimen that works for you in the long run to keep your calorie intake less than your calorie burn rate .

Lem453,

Your buddy must be very bad at his job

Lem453,

BC government is doing more to fix it than any other provincial government.

Lem453,

Yes, redis should be part of the standard install. Not doing it is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

Also I believe postgress has better performance than mariadb so no reason not to use that if you are setting it up from scratch.

Lem453,

Even better, cron job every 5 mins and if total remaining space falls to 5% auto delete the file and send a message to sys admin

  • Lem453,

I use these while travelling, works well and fits most doors

    Lem453,

Why is this needed? I have the minimal config for both server and client and smb and ssh bith work without issue.

    Lem453,

There is nothing special about the config, it’s the most basic config you can have as shown in the example at the bottom of this page.

    docs.opnsense.org/manual/…/wireguard-client.html

The part that was a bit complex is the ‘server’ setting. My server is on my router (opnsense) so you need to opnsense specific settings.

I suspect the reason you need the extra stuff is because of how the Debian server is setup so that stuff will vary if you ever try to run another ‘server’ node. (I put server in quotes because wireguard doesn’t actually have server and client as a concept)

    Lem453,

The driverless cars could have drivers assigned to monitor them 24/7 either in person or remotely until they have proven themselves for say a year. Nothing is perfect but there is a lot they can do better than the current situation.

    Lem453,

    m = meters. M = mega (x 1 000 000).

That’s why Km is 1 thousand meters and Mm is 1 million meters.

The actual unit is lower case, the multiplier is uppercase.

    Lem453,

Removing inefficient cars from the roads was literally the point of the program. You’re saying the program worked exactly as intended

    Lem453, (edited )

These comments all make this seem super complicated. I have a ZFS array on proxmox that exports itself over NFS and also an unraid server that has a share exported over NFS. I mount both into docker containers as needed. I’m in my phone so I’ll just copy and paste my install notes, hope that helps:

Proxmox Host Setup for NFS: -> proxmox install NFS server: apt install nfs-kernel-server -> create a filesystem for dockerData (makes snapshots easier and limits permissions) -> zfs create zfspool1/dockerData -> zfs set sharenfs=‘rw=@192.168.37.0/24,no_root_squash’ zfspool1/dockerdata -> zfs get sharenfs (to make sure only specific file systems are shared)

unraid: -> export NFS share with ‘private’ and set rule to: 192.168.37.0/24(rw)

Docker host setup (in my case I run an alpine server VM on proxmox:

    apk add nfs-utils -> rc-update add nfsmount -> rc-service nfsmount start

In docker compose you will need a volume section at the top

    volumes: sonarr-config: name: sonarr-config driver_opts: type: nfs o: addr=192.168.37.25,nolock,soft,rw device: :/zfspool1/dockerData/arr-stack/

    Followed by something this in the compose: arr-stack-sonarr: image: ghcr.io/linuxserver/sonarr container_name: arr-stack-sonarr volumes: - sonarr-config:/config - media-tv:/tv - media-downloads:/downloads:z

Is anyone using NixOS as their daily driver?

I’m currently running Arch and it’s great, but I’m noticing I’m not staying on the ball in regards to updates. I’ve been reading a bit about Nix and NixOS and thinking of trying it as my daily driver. I’ve got a Lenovo x1 xtreme laptop, I don’t do much gaming (except OSRS), use firefox, jetbrains stuff, bitwarden,...

    Lem453,

Do you use NixOS as a docker host? I’m hoping to move from an alpine VM to. NixOS VM for my docker host (hosted on proxmox). Would appreciate a config if you don’t mind posting yours. Also pitfalls for server use?

    Lem453,

At this point if you’re still using wells Fargo it’s on you

    Lem453,

You can also get cheaper mini PC’s on Alibaba for cheap. I did this in 2017 and it’s still going strong. No moving parts, all passively cooked with an Intel laptop chip that has hardware encryption built in (core i5).

Been using opnsense since the start and it’s been rock solid.

Your thoughts on The Orville? (lemmy.world)

When I first started this show I found it to be a really awkward mix of comedy and seriousness. It had some jokes thrown it at the most inopportune times as some kind of comic relief from a really serious situation. Perhaps the first half of the first season was actually a bit rough or maybe the show just grew on me, but by...

    Lem453,

Orville season 3 has a few episodes that are easily up to par in the top 10-20 star trek episodes of all times.

    Lem453,

Is there a way to follow Mastodon posts with my current Lemmy app (connect).

I see the odd comment here that is from Mastodon so I know there is some cross posting that happens but I’d like to follow people on Mastodon and have all on the same feed on connect if that makes sense. Is it possible?

What non-FOSS software are you using that you wish you could replace?

For me its honestly a ton of my work software (digital forensics), shit is too niche to be replaced by good FOSS options. Cellebrite, Magnet Axiom, etc. Autopsy is great and free and has a linux version but it simply cannot get the same level of data without a pretty nutty level of custom code....

    Lem453,

If freecad could get the same level of support as blender it would be a huge push towards “the year of the Linux desktop”

    Lem453,

The web client on desktop is not terrible. Not great, but not terrible.
