The project could be "hottest/most destructive fart". If it is, I would like to see the white paper.

Edit: my thinking being that the chairs would be a fairly consistent medium to test against

I still can't stand her

That's the point of the meme,lol

But also they specifically made her character unlikable. You were supposed to find her irritating in comparison to Walter, who is an objectively worse person. I think that was almost the entire point of her, to make you side with an objectively bad person over the other slightly less objectively bad person.

We are an apathetic people. I could easily see that continuing into the 24th century!

I feel like an alien in this thread because I hated the theme for the first two seasons but just started the expanse season and think the updated theme sounds much better. It's definitely weird they chose that season to change it though.

Is anybody out there buying vegan stuff thinking it's meat? Read the label. You should be doing that anyway.

Apple security updates could be banned by British government (9to5mac.com)

Everyone in the tech industry facepalms almost every time legislators try to pontificate on technology, but the British government appears to be trying to set a new record. After putting iMessage and FaceTime at risk, the government is now suggesting that it might ban some Apple security updates.

Tory governments regularly ignore expert advice, even when they have commissioned that advice. Look into immigration and drugs policy in the UK and you will find the government often does the opposite of what experts advise them to do. It's one of the ways you know they have an agenda other than "doing the right thing" or even "doing what is best for the country".

We just have to keep going and wait for the market of regional monopolies to correct itself.

And that company was Dutch. From what I remember, the US military was not very responsive to the news that this company had tracked thousands of emails that were supposed to go to .mil addresses.

Twitter is now X as the little blue bird disappears (www.theverge.com)

Twitter is transforming into X, as the site’s former bird logo has now been replaced by an official new X logo. Elon Musk, who owns the transformed social media site, began signaling the change early Sunday morning with a series of tweets, starting with one that said, “and soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and,...

Has anybody considered that Musk could be engaging in a Trading Places style billionaire competition, wherein the players try and trash their multi-billion dollar tech company faster than the others?

LChitman,
@LChitman@kbin.social avatar

Not sure, the other big companies have lots of individual issues and scandals but Twitter is way ahead, and it seems like there is something new every week. Musk must be winning so far.

Some drama is just down to their politics (authoritarian Marxist Leninist in the main), and some relating to their moderation based on politics (bans for users posting articles critical of China, allegedly). You should be able to search and find recent treads, here is one I still had a tab open from yesterday:

https://kbin.social/m/[email protected]/t/171975/TIL-lemmy-ml-is-a-pro-authoritarian-CCP-shill-instance

Another part of this is people's concerns about whether their politics influences their development of Lemmy.

I reckon I'd go in the left lane approaching the roundabout. Your exit is maybe technically "to the right" of entry but it's marginal and that's only a rule of thumb. You have to move to the left lane to come off anyway and you're not going to be in anyone's way going round are you?

I suppose it should introduce you to things you aren't already subscribed to but I'm not going to cry over instances blocking things that are widely considered undesirable on that instance. I'm happy enough blocking things I know I don't like manually for now. For others: go to e.g. https://kbin.social/d/yiffit.net, open sidebar and click the block symbol - change the domain at the end to block others.

You have to hand your self-respect in when you register as an influencer.

Tell HN: Nearly all of Evernote’s remaining staff has been laid off | Hacker News (news.ycombinator.com)

Its acquirer (Bending Spoons) has taken over operations. They’ve also hiked subscriptions prices and told customers they intend to use new revenues to pay for new features. How they intend to do that without any staff is something I would like to know about....

Recommendations for alternatives? I've been meaning to switch to something else for a long time for my personal notes. Taking a look at obsidian now but interested in shopping around. Self hosted, cross platform and tools for sharing/collaboration desired.

LChitman,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write all this. I'll be back after work today to do a bit of exploring of these options and the others posted in this thread. Looking forward to spending half the weekend sorting out my notes now!

Poor sound mixing is exactly why I watch most things with subs by default now. I got sick of constantly having to turn the volume up to hear dialogue and then quickly back down to avoid massive explosions etc.

LChitman,
@LChitman@kbin.social avatar

Interesting, I thought the sound mixing in films was poor because it was designed for cinema viewing and then not optimised for home setups. But I don't watch many movies on the big screen anymore. I thought at least some people were enjoying good quality mixing haha

LChitman,
@LChitman@kbin.social avatar

Funnily enough, watching TV in bed is the other reason I started watching with subs! I've since switched to bluetooth headphones for that and I find I don't usually need subtitles if I'm using them.

LChitman,
@LChitman@kbin.social avatar

That's really interesting too! I guess there are so many combinations of recording equipment, the quality of the mix, the streaming services spec, and the consumers set up, that they can't accommodate everyone.

Thanks for the links 👍

Could mean nothing but it's a bad look to be having talks under NDA. We'll see how it turns out but I'm glad I never got invested in using Mastodon.

LChitman,
@LChitman@kbin.social avatar

This is the one for me. I just checked and I've been using the premium version since May 2016 and it cost me £2.50. Only issue I've had in that time is the web player was failing to buffer episodes for streaming, but that has since resolved for me.

LChitman,
@LChitman@kbin.social avatar

I am a super casual pirate these days. Qbittorrent with jackett, and debrid for streaming gives me everything I need. I used to do Usenet and torrents with a bunch of private trackers but I like how easy it is not having all that crap. Managing my debrid and syncler subscriptions is about the limit of the regular admin I want to do. My only issue is public torrents feel a bit exposed but it's not something I worry about.

The last time I downloaded Linux mint to give it a try was the day before they announced the ISO from the official site had been injected with malicious code. Bad timing for my interest in using Linux, lol.

Yes, I've been using this for a while on my work computer with win11, neat little feature.
