Four_lights77,

Yes but Vietnam was the catalyst.

Four_lights77,

Yes. I feel like I’m finally sorting between the addiction I developed to “content” on Reddit and the interaction that makes sites like this great.

Steam Deck Owners: What’s been your favorite game that you first discovered on Steam Deck and now you can’t seem to put down?

Looking for those games that you may have heard about but never tried until you got a Deck. Or old games on systems you never had that you’re trying for the first time. Or new AAA games that just released in the last year or two that you picked up for the first time specifically to play on Steam Deck and have kept you glued to...

Four_lights77,

The messenger and stardew valley are perfect steam deck games. I suspect hades is too but I put too many hours into it on PC before I got the deck.

Four_lights77,

Probably so it can detect it as quickly as possible for elimination.

Four_lights77,

If you haven’t watched Extrapolations on Apple TV, you should. It combines the existential dread of climate change with the upbeat and witty story tension of Chernobyl.

Seriously though, it’s a good show but maybe don’t drink while watching?

Twitter's lost 13% of its daily users and its rebrand has failed (www.bigtechnology.com)

The new data — comprehensive and definitive — should put to rest the countervailing narratives over Musk’s management of the app. Under his stewardship, X’s daily user base has declined from an estimated 140 million users to 121 million, with a widening gap between people who check the app daily vs. monthly. X’s...

Four_lights77,

I don’t think Twitter and Reddit are going to die quickly. They have user bases that they can monetize and bots to flood content. They were shitty enough that enough of left and gave a nice boost to federated platforms. That boost will grow every time those legacy platforms alienate their users by treating them badly. Like windows and Linux.

Four_lights77,

This makes sense. By now a full 3-4% of all data on the internet is probably Linux help forums so it’s probably highly represented in its dataset lol

Doctor Who: Here's Why David Tennant is The Face of The Modern Era (bleedingcool.com)

Let’s look back at Series Two of the modern era of Doctor Who, Russell T. Davies’ second season, and David Tennant’s first season as The Tenth Doctor. It was here that the series’ shift into a global phenomenon began, and Tennant became the face of the modern era of Doctor Who in the same way Tom Baker is still...

Four_lights77,

A lot of the reason I liked Jodie Whitaker’s Doctor so much was because she channeled tennant so well in her own way. She was let down by poor writing and over used tropes though. I’m really excited to see the series in a fresh light.

Four_lights77,

The unintended consequence of repeated attacks on net neutrality is that so many more people understand what net neutrality is and won’t fall for this bs.

Four_lights77,

Still one of my favourite blues licks of all time.

Four_lights77,

Every time I bite into one, I get this. When I’m cautious and decide to cut? Dry as a bone. smh

Four_lights77,

I love BG3, but agree that it deserves some criticism for act 3 bugginess. Just remember Bethesda basically forced them to release a month early when they announced starfield was coming out on the same weekend.

Four_lights77,

The pendulum is swinging back towards the monopoly model that destroyed cable. Time to dust off the old Jolly Roger and teach streaming an old lesson of what happens when you price gouge people.

Building more isn't enough to lower home prices (www.theglobeandmail.com)

The guy who runs Generation Squeeze says building more homes isn’t enough to lower prices, because most people buying houses are already property owners. Property owners can either sell their current house to get a load of cash, or borrow against it to get a load of cash. Either way, they can pay a lot for their next property....

Four_lights77,

None of the donor class want prices to come down. They won’t be able to price gouge as landlords and the middle class will run out of credit to buy their products.

Four_lights77,

Mad Max would at least be the most metal way to dystopia lol

Four_lights77,

As a newly converted Fedora user, has this x11 been an issue or is this simply an aesthetics/preference thing?

Four_lights77,

Ok cool- sounds like a good move. Thanks for the explanation.

Four_lights77,

I’ve tried to migrate my account several times in the past. It never works for some reason. Also, I can never seem to untangle the web of deceit known as Microsoft/xbox/Minecraft profiles and family/group settings. About once a year I spend a couple hours trying to sort it out and then give up because it never works. Google can be awful sometimes but at least they figured out “sign in with Google”

Four_lights77,

Well - hertz just lost all my future business.

Four_lights77,

Fingers crossed for an M3 MacBook Air!

Four_lights77,

School will never be as interesting as a phone. Your teacher will never be as entertaining as an influencer. Your textbooks will never be as entertaining as your feed. What families and teenagers have to understand is that education is a choice. If you want to learn, you’ll probably have to put your phone down for long periods of time to actively listen and learn. It’s difficult. It tires you out. It’ll frustrate you. But you will eventually learn.

Then again - when I look at home prices and inflation, I understand young people’s feelings of futility.

Good luck young people. I’m really rooting for you to figure this out.

Four_lights77,

The user reviews are where it’s at on rotten tomatoes. The critic reviews have been kinda suspect for a while.

Four_lights77,

Well…they had to pay off the politicians that would write these nice little laws for them so it’s not all free, right!? /sarcasm

Four_lights77,

Disco Elysium. It’s much more than funny, but it can also be really funny. Cuno is really funny.

Four_lights77,

They want to kill the site and license the data. Same with Twitter. It’s the only explanation that makes sense based on what they’re doing.

Four_lights77,

The classic Wizard vs Bard debate.

'Trump isn't funding any of us': Co-defendants in Georgia case are struggling with mounting legal bills (www.cnn.com)

Some of Donald Trump’s co-defendants in the sprawling election subversion case in Georgia are trying all sorts of ways to fund their mounting legal bills – yet the costs of the 2020 election fallout may quickly exceed their abilities to pay....

Four_lights77,

Remember when the IT guy at mar a lago switched to states evidence when he got his own lawyer? Yeah - you probably don’t want trump’s lawyers anyway lol.

Four_lights77,

As someone who really dislikes eating in front of people, seeing myself eat makes me instantly nauseous.

Four_lights77,

The end of Tchaikovsky 5 has a surprise coda.

Four_lights77,

“Dammit Cohagen, give these people air!”

Four_lights77,

Wow. I’m glad she spoke up and I hope she’s doing better now. I hope more people at LTT are empowered to speak out/leave by her courage.

Four_lights77,

Maybe we need to update the nomenclature. Software with loot boxes, pay to win mechanics, predatory gameplay loops, and storefront-first design should now be called “casinos”. They should have disclaimers about gambling and addiction in their load screen, have age restrictions, and should be forced to institute limits on what can be spent in a certain time frame. Feature-complete software with zero storefronts of any kind would be allowed to brand themselves as “games”.

Four_lights77,

I’m not sure about toys, but watching my son grow up with app stores has made me very aware of how so called “games” have been monetizing our children makes me want some real legislation and restrictions on what is legal to market to children. The “idle” category of games is just egregious. They’re a flimsy and thin veneer of game painted over a bank machine. AAA is not much better - they just have more complicated routes take your money.

Four_lights77,

I’m sorry but they don’t actually want you to have money. They want you to have credit. Lots and lots of credit if possible. Because then they win twice. Once in the purchases and second in the interest.

Four_lights77,

I mean the answer here is simple. Listen to your employees. They are your content, Linus.

Four_lights77,

Hey google, I heard people like money. Maybe if you pay willing employees a reasonable amount to commute, they’ll be willing to come in. Otherwise, shut it.

Four_lights77,

I’m exactly the same. I feel like the opportunity to have a productive conversation on Lemmy is a lot higher. There are fewer of us right now but we are the motivated minority kicking Reddit to the curb for its terrible actions and we want to see Lemmy thrive.

Four_lights77,

They could…but they’d still have to verify the entire process was independently reproducible anyway.

Four_lights77,

Business groups and lobbyists have aggressively opposed efforts at state and federal levels to enact heat protection standards for workers, claiming employers already practice what a standard would mandate, expressing concerns about the burden on employers, and claiming the efforts take a “wrong approach”.

No matter what regulations were implemented, regulators would have to watch them like a hawk to make sure they complied anyway. Also - people wouldn’t be dying if the current standards were sufficient for the current climate.

Four_lights77,

Cool…but remember Apple, we still have to hold these things with our hands. I had a Samsung with curved edges for two years and it was a bit of a disaster to use one handed.

Four_lights77,

Ontario, Canada has all but eliminated homework entirely until high school. There is absolutely no good data saying it helps in acquisition or retention of skills over the long term. Completion of homework is also strongly correlated along class lines. If Suzy has a stable home, is fed well, and gets good sleep, she will likely have time and resources to complete homework. If Todd doesn’t, he likely won’t. We should focus on the in-school instruction. As far as the length of day? If you keep the kids longer it will cost more so it’s unlikely many jurisdictions will raise taxes for that expenditure.

Four_lights77,

Fascinating. I’m truly excited to see how much more efficient in energy consumption these chips will be. I was blown away by the leap forward in battery life M1 was capable of at launch. If we can start to bring those efficiency gains to data centres we can start to crunch numbers on serious problems like climate change.

Four_lights77,

This has always been an underlying scam of capitalism. It’s usually much more profitable to lie and make money than it is to provide a truly good product and/or service.

Time to Move on From PS5?

I’ve been having some thoughts lately that I would have believed crazy just a few years ago. I’m starting to think it might be time to move on from my PS5 and triple A gaming as a whole. I’ve had a PlayStation from the PS2 all the way to the latest generation of consoles. I remember fondly time spent roaming the lands of...

Four_lights77,

They are some seriously cool games coming out this year like Starfield, armoured core 6, and Baldur gate 3. Sell your ps5 and get a pc or steam deck.
