FigMcLargeHuge,

I’ll tell you what you don’t have… White zipper pulls.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson regularly uses private email for official business (www.kut.org)

A spokesperson for the mayor told KUT that Watson does not like Outlook, the email program city staff use. He has instead opted to conduct some mayoral business on a personal Gmail account. “Some people communicate with me on non-City of Austin accounts and I sometimes use non-City accounts,” Watson said via the...

FigMcLargeHuge,

Well he will learn the hard way when his entire gmail account is subpoenaed at some point and made public. Don’t mix personal and work together.

FigMcLargeHuge,

I just yt-dlp any videos I want to watch and copy them over to my plex server. No ads to be found and none of these bullshit games.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Easy there. The headline doesn’t need to contain the entire article, but a couple of words would have made it way more descriptive and less click baity. For instance:

Oklahoma Supreme Court chief justice recommends removing judge for texting inappropriate comments during a murder trial

FigMcLargeHuge,

You might want to take a break there. My only issue with the original was that it implied that a judge was just texting and therefore in need of a firing. But it wasn’t just because she was texting, it was the fact that they were inappropriate. I think you are delving a little too deep here. I get frustrated with articles where the headline is misleading, and this is one of those. Like a few months ago “Saturn’s Rings are disappearing.” The article started off with “Future astronomers might not get to see Saturn’s Rings.” And then at the end, they pop in that well, it’s estimated this will all happen in about 100 million years. This article might not have been that bad, but you have to at least admin it was clickbaity. The Lemmy headline was at least funny.

FigMcLargeHuge,

It’s just one that has been bugging me for a few months. :)

FigMcLargeHuge,

The straw for me was when they made Snow Day competitive only. Stupid fucking decision and ruined the game for those of us who just got on to do some casual snow day.

FigMcLargeHuge, (edited )

Hate to be the turd in the punchbowl, but you just missed Bike Nights at COTA. I am only mentioning it so maybe if you come back you can look up the schedule. I am sure there are plenty of awesome bike rides around though, but it’s so cool to get out on the F1/MotoGP track and do some laps. If bombing down a hill on a mountain bike is your thing, there’s Spider Mountain out past Burnet.

Anyone else feel like Minecraft has gotten stale?

I feel like all of the recent updates had this lackluster appeal to them. It might be because I’m outgrown it, but the last big update I felt excited for was the terrain generation one (I think 1.18?). Other than that I can’t really get behind any of them. I mean, archeology sounds cool and all but it doesn’t really feel...

FigMcLargeHuge,

I play on my Switch mostly, and it’s gotten a little frustrating. It’s like they don’t even test the Switch anymore. For instance, I get notifications that say “Blah blah has invited you to play. Press the - button.” And no matter what you do, you cannot reply to an invite. It you are out of the game, the - button does nothing, and ingame they mapped it to emoticons and there’s no way to remap either. So they literally stuck another function over the same keypress without even giving a shit, nor do they care, since it’s been like that for a while. Don’t get me started on startup times. Why does it take 2 mins to even get the game up an going? It didn’t take that long versions ago, but again, they don’t even seem to test anything on the Switch. If you are on a realm, or any online game and you press the home button, say to check your friends online status, it logs you out of the realm or online game. You used to be able to pop out to the system menu, even check screenshots, and then when you popped back into minecraft you were right there where you were when you popped out, but now, nope, just logs you right the fuck off instantly. It’s shit like that that is causing me to sour on it. Stop adding in new shit, and spend a cycle or two putting things back to like they were, and working properly. They forced us to move to Bedrock, and are now just crapping on it, thinking that we want more and more shit. Hey microsoft, we don’t. We would just like the shit we have to work properly.

FigMcLargeHuge,

man -k will do the exact search you are asking about. Now I have found that some systems aren’t setting it up properly lately, but that command and -k option have been there for decades. Maybe you should try: man man to see what all options are available.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Yeah, I agree with you mostly, and hope my reply wasn’t coming across as dickish. As a long time *nix user, I find the commands in Powershell to be equally nonsensically named at times. I do remember the times when it was joked that unix commands were usually named after the author’s dog, but I think over time that has changed. I am sure if I had to use Powershell just a fraction of the time I use the linux command line on a daily basis I would get more familiar and comfortable with it. But you are correct that overall, this is a human issue, and not something that can easily be solved. Not everyone wants to delve into suspension tuning, some people just need to get in the car and reasonably expect to arrive at their destination.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Don’t forget that you can set up alias commands. So if you don’t like the name of a command, or don’t want to keep typing things out, you can set up an alias. For instance, I have to continually switch to another user. I set up alias so I can type gouser instead of “sudo su - user”. So if the name of something isn’t easy or hard to memorize, you can just make it whatever you want within limitations.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Car mfrs are too busy adding in shit we don’t need, like internet access or gigantic fucking screens they can move all the buttons to.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Last line of the article: “Just like choosing not to ride on airplanes isn’t really an option, for many, using social media isn’t much of a choice either.

Holy crap. We have reached that point. As someone with no social media, it just amazes me how people have let these apps become ingrained in their lives. Sad in my opinion.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Depends. Everyone claims they are on social media platforms to stay in touch with family and friends. I know no one on here and am fine with the anonymity. So it’s up to you if you count this.

FigMcLargeHuge,

See, to me, all of those people are willing to trade their privacy for convenience. And the fact that others are getting rich off of sifting through and collecting all of this data also is wrong in my opinion. To each his/her/their own, but I still think it’s sad how dependent people have become on social media.

FigMcLargeHuge,

So how should social media companies make money?

I guess my real problem with this is how underhanded they seem to be with the information they collect. I know they need to pay the bills, but they could definitely be more upfront and open about what they gather on people.

FigMcLargeHuge,

I am going to say this, and it’s because this is such a cliche’ response to me at this point, but I call bullshit. People making these excuses are laughable to me now with this. You aren’t talking about scaling Mt. Everest levels of effort here. Everyone you are communicating with has a phone number, and you could take the time to call them if you wanted to communicate with them, use text messaging, or email. As for the birthdays and events, go to the dollar store, or an equivalent and buy a calendar. They sell them with cute pics, or funny quotes, or whatever. Then mark the dates down. It’s fucking comical to me now how people act about getting rid of facebook. If facebook was waking up every morning and driving you to work, then yeah, it might be hard, but come on people… I feel like I am watching a b movie where everyone has been put in a trance and is just walking around mindlessly all saying the same mantra. “It’s too hard. Can’t break free.” And none of this has even touched on privacy, of which there is none on facebook. People spouting this are just willing to give up any shred of privacy for some minor convenience and it’s frustrating to watch.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Lettuce never speak of this again.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Rumor is it was sabotage. His brake lines sprung a leek.

FigMcLargeHuge,

I think this goes deeper than just actors compensation. This will take things to a new level when this hits courtrooms. Imagine sitting there watching a video of you doing something you never actually did entered into evidence.

FigMcLargeHuge,

So perfect!

FigMcLargeHuge, (edited )

I mean if you want to go full technical here, your dvd/bluray player is breaking the DRM as well.

Edit: Ignore this, I am a dumbass.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. My brain is not a good brain.

FigMcLargeHuge,

How, in 2023, is someone sill making money doing Bill Clinton and George Bush impersonations??

FigMcLargeHuge,

Hell, there’s too many people on Lemmy giving reddit too much activity. I blocked a couple of bots that were literally just yanking posts from reddit. They even left the links right back to reddit giving them the actual traffic. We can do better people. If I want shitty reddit content I would just go there.

FigMcLargeHuge,

It has the feel of “we are the ones being shoplifted…”

FigMcLargeHuge,

Apples and oranges. If you are a cashier and theft occurs you aren’t paid enough to risk anything, including your life, to stop theft. Companies can hire more asset protection people.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Hopefully not now that the FCC sued them and wants to break up Amazon.

Oh my sweet summer child…

FigMcLargeHuge,

Because not everyone has gigabit fiber run to their door. Streaming is not always the answer. I have read through all the back and forth here, but this is the point that was lost in the conversation. While it may be obsolete to you, it’s still the easiest way to transfer large amounts of data to someone that might not have any internet other than their cell phone service.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Not sure what you mean. You said disc based media is obsolete, and I explained why it isn’t. I am not arguing about digital vs analog here. I am explaining why a form of digital media is still in use.

GPUs from all major suppliers are vulnerable to new pixel-stealing attack (arstechnica.com)

GPUs from all six of the major suppliers are vulnerable to a newly discovered attack that allows malicious websites to read the usernames, passwords, and other sensitive visual data displayed by other websites, researchers have demonstrated in a paper published Tuesday....

FigMcLargeHuge,

Those pixel stealing whores!

FigMcLargeHuge,

No kidding. Saw a news story a week or so ago where they were holding a celebration of life ceremony for a tree. Felt like the old Austin there for a minute.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Do you really want to fuck around and find out…

What new modifications do you expect to see in the EV hot rodding scene?

Specifically ev, and specifically aftermarket modifications. Whether it’s a custom shop offering a package that you could have installed, or a backyard tinkerer coming up with a new trick to make their EV ratrod faster, what do you think will be done in the future that hasn’t been done yet?...

FigMcLargeHuge,

Monster Cables enters the chat…

FigMcLargeHuge,

He does, but Alex’s guitar give me goose bumps every single time on this song. And playing the actual album, that is one hell of a way to end it.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Have not been back. I even go so far as to block bots on here that just seem to harvest posts straight from reddit, or link directly back to reddit. They can keep it.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Is it just me, or is powershell fucking horrible?

FigMcLargeHuge,

Maybe Crowdstrike? I know I see it on our linux machines. I am not endorsing it one way or the other. I will say that we have had a couple of incidents where I thought it was taking up more cpu in a high cpu situation, but our admins turned it off, and that wasn’t the problem. So I guess it’s working ok. One of their updates caused some issues one time, and I don’t recall the exact details, but I think that was a one off and they haven’t done it again.

qwerty_ad, to minecraft

What did you like the most about old minecraft?

I never played the original alpha minecraft. Tell me what you liked best.

@minecraft

FigMcLargeHuge,

First, no phantoms. Next, mining. It used to be nice and relaxing, and they seem to be trying to suck the fun out of it with all the new blocks and longer times to break a block. Also not a fan of the new caves and such. They are just too common in my opinion. They disrupt my mining. At least they haven’t fucked with fishing.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Yeah, I have some older versions on my pc. I have a virtual machine running mine-os that I keep around. But lately I just like to pick up my Switch and play. A friend has a realm we work on that he can download when we decide to swap it out and start fresh. Speaking of older minecraft, they have really screwed up the Switch version. You used to be able to pop out of minecraft and go to your saved images on your switch, or go look at your profile and see your friends and what they were playing. Now, when you hit the home button and it pops out of mc, you immediately get disconnected from a realm. If you leave mc running and sleep the Switch, when you come back in I manually have to reconnect to my microsoft id, and when I do that most of the time it just forces me to re-login. So I always just stop mc now and restart it when I bring my Switch back up. And since I am on a rant, how about the load time for the game. Not sure how kids with no attention span manage. It takes 2 goddamn minutes it seems to bring the game up with everything loaded and ready to go, and even then sometimes I get this “Loading Resources” popup that can sit there for another min. Really shitty code that they don’t want to look at I guess because they are too busy adding in crap that isn’t needed. It’s like they don’t even own or test on any Switches.

Sorry for the rant, but as an old guy I feel it’s my duty.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Is there a discord or somewhere people are discussing this AG Impeachment trial as it happens?

Need help on installing NVIDIA drivers for old GPU.

I have a GeForce 210 GPU on an EndeavourOS computer. I use Noveau drivers, but some apps like Blender have a broken user interface, and KDE acts weird sometimes. I tried installing the proprietary NVIDIA drivers following the Archlinux wiki, but I did not have any display output at all. I also tried running the NVIDIA driver...

FigMcLargeHuge,

On ubuntu you can use the “apt-mark hold” command to keep certain packages from updating.

Eg: sudo apt-mark hold nvidia-kernel-common-470-server

FigMcLargeHuge,

Here’s the fucked up part. We were all told to NOT make the payments. Well in hindsight, that was a bad idea, because I could have almost paid off my loans interest free. Now I go back to owing $10K+ and will have to pay interest on it. This whole situation is really shitty for everyone.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Ok, let me rephrase that. We were put in a situation where we had to gamble.

Google Fi "opted you in" to data selling - You can opt out of CPNI (fi.google.com)

Received an email from Google Fi that their policy is to “opt you in” to sell your phone-call and purchase info to advertisers. They call the data your CPNI — “Customer Proprietary Network Information”. Making this an opt-out when it’s a combo of your shopping data plus phone-call data (including destination and...

FigMcLargeHuge,

Fuckers! Dick move there Fi.

FigMcLargeHuge,

Nice. The news station KXAN did a story on it about a week ago, and there’s video of this guy taking off from the shopping center. What a douche.
