Fake4000,

I’m not sure if it’s considered streaming but I absolutely love Star Talk with Neil Degrasse Tyson. The guy is amazing at teaching stuff and a comedian co host is always a plus.

I’ve learned from his show during house chores.

Fake4000,

I’m not entirely sure about this to be honest, but thanks for letting me know.

Fake4000,

I’m guessing it has become more of a financial burden to be honest.

Choosing the right gifts, decorations, food. Etc.

Fake4000,

Looks like it will federate for now. Unless it changes.

fedipact.veganism.social/?v=2

Fake4000,

I 90 percent of the time browse my list of communities.

The other ten percent, I explore the All feed. It’s filled with so many communities that do not interest me.

I don’t think I will be blocking any instances for now as it helps in exploring new groups.

Fake4000,

Probably your best option now is getting a pixel phone and flashing it with graphene os.

If you can’t get a pixel phone you may want to use something like lineage os and make sure you don’t add any Google services to it.

Fake4000,

That’s amazing. Never knew about this phone.

Fake4000,

A few comes to mind.

Ordinary Things is great and Michael Fisher is good and usually doesn’t hype stuff up.

Fake4000,

A lot of tech YouTubers (such as Mr whose the boss). Just a hype man reading specs and hyping up shit.

Just look at him speaking about the Huawei Mate 60 pro. What a load of bullshit.

How to enable persistent notifications on Android 14?

Hello! Just switched from my old device with android 10 to my new pixel with Android 14 (GrapheneOS), and I’m missing a lot the persistent notification feature of android 10: I used Tasks.org from fdroid to get reminders in my notifications tray, and until I manually clicked “completed” there was no way to remove them, not...

Fake4000,

As a workaround, why not add a widget to your home screen?

Fake4000,

That’s been going on for a very long time. Way before they even acquired Fitbit for such info.

Fake4000,

Have you tried to use an app like OSMAND?

Fake4000,

Feeder is as good as it gets.

f-droid.org/en/…/com.nononsenseapps.feeder/

It’s free and open source for android.

Fake4000,

Lemmy.world for me.

It’s generic, has a good list of communities, and the mods are legends with updates and transparency.

Fake4000,

I agree with instances that decided not to federate with threads.

Imagine having millions of users just dumping content on us here. A continuous flood of low quality content.

Fake4000,

I don’t understand, you can pretty much install any app store on android.

Am I missing something?

Fake4000,

Thanks for the explanation. Very helpful and insightful.

Fake4000,

It depends on where you are. Outside the USA, hardly anyone I know uses iMessage really. It’s mostly WhatsApp everywhere else in the world.

Fake4000,

Google Messages with RCS has the ability to become a new standard but there are two issues:

  1. I think it’s too late. People already use app with their groups all set. Might be difficult to shift people to yet another platform.
  2. Google beautifully has the reputation of killing off whatever doesn’t work. How future proof is this messages app now? Just look at the list of previous chatting apps by Google.
Fake4000,

True. This would be an issue for anyone with a custom ROM. Although Signal is there as an option as well.

Fake4000,

True. People here already been using WhatsApp for more than a decade. They have all their contacts and groups set up. You can’t just ask everyone to adopt a new standard.

Fake4000,

Updates have been getting better though it depends on the company.

Samsung and Google are leading the updates, but a lot of companies would sell you a phone with two years of updates (Asus for example).

There are also worse brands that barely support their phones.

Used to envy apple users with their updates. It’s getting better now.

Fake4000,

I’m not sure if it’s considered mainstream it would be the vengeance trilogy of Park Chan Wook.

The movies are Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Old Boy, and Lady Vengeance.

Fake4000,

App and OS updates.

Fake4000,

Have been using Linux for years yes. Wouldn’t go with Gentoo though, too much hassle for me.

Fake4000,

Lenovo M10 3rd gen.

They are about £120, basic tablets with decent batteries, 10 inch screen, has a memory card slot.

What phone do you sugest for your grandparents?

I got a task to buy a smart phone for my grandparents, they are not techsavy but they know how to use basic functions. Iam looking for an andoid because it has language pack i need. I dont need it to have lots of functions, onley a good camera and a big screen. Bonus points if it can be flashed with some kind of simplefied...

Fake4000,

If its an iPhone I would go with an iPhone plus for the screen size.

If its android, I would go with a Samsung A device. They’re usually big in size, affordable, comes with a lot of accessibility features, good battery, and relatively easy to find accessories and spare parts.

Fake4000,

One solution that comes to mind is Odoo

But you will have to check it and see if it has the things you look for.

Fake4000,

I have a few old phones that still work great. Yes Google might pull their support on the phone because it has an old version of android but you can always use fdroid or side load apps.

I have a couple of old phones here. A 10 year old phone that is used as a bedside alarm and flashlight when needed. The other is a 6 year old phone that is used as a practice device of loading custom ROMs and jail breaking purposes.

Fake4000,

Never liked Chinese brand phones.

They are always filled with security holes, sometimes “accidentally on purpose”.

Fake4000,

I usually deep sleep all apps that I don’t need to run constantly, and their notifications get disabled along with them.

So really I end up with only the core apps to receive notifications from. Usually apps related to communications.

Fake4000,

I feel your hobbies are amazing to be honest. I’ve always wanted to collect video games and watch pre 2000s animes but never have the chance due to work.

You might be lonely yes, but never a loser. I feel that you have revolved everything around dating and relationships. To be honest, if you are enjoying life, then you are doing well. Never feel bad for not conforming with others.

Fake4000,

Syncthing.

Allows you to use a laptop and sync your phone to it. No iCloud or Google drive needed. All syncs locally.

Fake4000,

You have used both. How does Resilio compare to Syncthing?

BruceTwarzen, to asklemmy

Is there a Spotify alternative that has no ads?

I pay for Spotify for 7 years or so now and i'm so sick of all the ads. After every update there seems to be an: oops, sorry, you have ads now. Podcasts are filled with ads. I was just listening to a podcast where they shoved in 3 ads mid-sentence. How long until musicians put ads in their songs. I'm just so sick of it.

Fake4000,

Either use Newpipe or patch YouTube music with Revanced

Fake4000,

I hear a lot of people praise Organic Maps but I haven’t tried it personally.

Would you be able to let us know how Google Maps is getting worse?

Fake4000,

Using Microsoft OneNote. Each group relates to a client. Each workbook within it is related to a project. And each sheet within that workbook is linked to notes of a certain activity like a call or meeting.

Help me choose my mobile browser

As per title, Help me choose a browser for android I have non rooted device. After all the researches I found best for me would be 1: Mull but with Some way for knowing which site have saved any data on my device (Maybe by extension or some defined page like about:config type) But as per my research I do not found any such...

Fake4000,

I would say go with either chromite or firefox. Both are private, supported for now, and can block ads (UBO on firefox)

Fake4000,

I tend not to. Assume no privacy of any work device given to you.

Fake4000,

Would you be able to let us know the services you used, the replacements, and how did the migration process work?

Fake4000,

Learning about federated platforms work. A lot of people came from Reddit and it’s all new to us.

It’s very exciting to see how it all works and federate with one another.

Also, it allowed me to explore other federated platforms such as Mastodon and Pixelfed.

Fake4000,

Depends on how you define good budget.

To me, the Samsung galaxy a phones and the pixel a phones are good. They strike the balance between value and having an actually usable phone.

Fake4000,

I actually use Brave and have been for few years. Used Firefox back when it was version 2 and switched to Brave as it’s performance was better compared to Firefox.

Reading the above now, you have shed a lot of light on things I didn’t know about Brave. I know I can disable a lot of stuff on it (news, rewards, VPN, chat). But the list of bloat has been increasing.

Your post is an eye opener. I will be looking for a way to switch to Firefox. Unfortunately I work for an organisation that doesn’t give us the option of installing our browser. Forced to use MS Edge for now lol.

Fake4000,

The last 3rd party app that is still holding its ground is infinity. It’s a great app but a lot of users are telling the developer to just stop supporting Reddit.

Fake4000,

Yeah. Boost still works fine for me though some bugs are there. Downloading videos isn’t working properly and uploading images to posts is broken.

But then again, any app is better than the official one.
