I wanna see instances federated with most instances now that in individuals can ban entire instances. I know theres still some instances you want completely blocked from the off tho....
The whole point about federation is you are welcome to find another instance that shares this view!
Personally, I don’t want to stumble onto CSAM or racist shit and have to block those instances myself. (It’s exhausting enough blocking the hentai and furry communities as it is!)
King Charles of Canada makes a rare public speech calling for aid from the Commonwealth to support Europe in defending against the US. It’s broadcast on Canadian TV....
I wonder about that. On the face of it, yes they ought to. But a couple of thoughts might tip the scale:
an offensive war is much harder than a defensive one.
America would have to maintain gigantic transoceanic supply lines .
America has a low tolerance for casualties, especially in foreign lands. Whereas Europe defending itself would probably be more tolerant. (Except for France. For French reasons.)
Such an invasion would cause huge social unrest at home. Presumably such an invasion would be instigated by trump who would then be compelled to deploy the military at home as well.
I also wonder how much air superiority the US would really have. Assuming other countries weren’t letting the US use their air bases, they’d have to project air power from their carriers. Google seems to think about 64 fighters per carrier, as the US only has 20 carriers, which gives it an effective air fleet of about 1,300 aircraft compared to Europe’s 5000.
America would have to maintain gigantic transoceanic supply lines.
Those supply lines aren’t subject to attack though. They’d have to defend them against submarine attacks across thousands and thousands of kilometers. In that sort of fight, advantage to the attacker.
They seem pretty okay with casualties in every war since Vietnam.
Not in the numbers required for a ground war in Europe. America lost some 7,000 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and its been considered a major debacle. Consider the number of casualties in Ukraine…
The USA military is beholden to the president over anyone else.
Oh, probably legal. Buy there would be massive protests, maybe riots etc. It would be a huge internal headache and distraction.
The new federal dental insurance plan will be phased in gradually over 2024, with the first claims likely to be processed in May, government officials said ahead of a formal announcement scheduled for Monday morning.
It might feel a little low (especially if you live in Vancouver/Toronto) but it covers some 9 million of us.
I imagine they’ll keep revisiting the number or index it to inflation. But really, these programs are designed to help the most needy and at 90k it is already one of our largest social programs.
This is a lot to think about! I really appreciate the depth of thought you’ve given this. I initially assumed I just want to tablet but I’ll give comics a whirl on the ol’ desktop and see how much better they are…
Prices are sticky but the rate of inflation slows. Hopefully at least. You don’t want to slow spending down so much so as to cause a recession, it’s a fine balance.
Given how long term an issue like inflation is, trying to tame it is a relatively new experience/adventure for humanity.

Hell, I live in Vancouver and our transit system is world class. Lived as an adult for 20 years here, never needed one. (Finally got one so I could go skiing more easily but even so, I haven’t filled up the table since a road trip in August because transit is so damned convenient.)
And almost all of the rest of the province is far too spread out for a comparable transit system.
Victoria for its population has a pretty solid one. But if you think about how large even a city like Kelowna is, public transit simply isn’t an effective mechanism. It’s one of the tradeoffs involved in the cheaper, more room/space rural living.
Oh Amsterdam’s cycling infrastructure is second to none. But comparing Amsterdam’s transit system to Vancouver’s is pretty unfair; Amsterdam has a population density of almost 5,000 people per square km compared to the GVRD’s pop density of just over 900/square km. It’s sort of like comparing Vancouver’s public transit to Hope’s.
I am perhaps biased having lived in Ireland where, the transit was abysmal. In my time in Berlin, transit was effective but I wouldn’t put it above Vancouver’s. Spain/Italy was ridiculous (not in a great way.) Though, all of them (except Ireland) were great at cross country connections for sure.
I get tired of everyone excusing Canada’s stupidity because of population density.
This is like me saying “I’m sick of not playing for the Canucks just because I can’t really skate backwards, don’t have a shot and have trouble receiving passes.”
Sorry but we live in the second largest country in the world and one of the least densely populated.
Either the transit will be more expensive (thus defeating the accessible to all goal) be worse or massively subsidized with taxes. Same with cell /internet. Unless you have a magic wand, that’s just part of the deal.
My cat did this, now has an inhaler, doesn’t do it anymore. The asthma meds aren’t super expensive ($40 every two months or so) but you will need a prescription (or you do in my country.)
You can buy the inhaler tube bit for pretty cheap online:

Shorts are new-ish to the platform. Like others that saw the success of TikTok (e.g., facebook with their reels, presumably instagram has something similar) they pumped out their own version to better trap people on the platform.
