How many of you run a Linux phone (Pine64, Librem etc) as your daily driver?

I was going through Pine64’s page again after I found the latest KDE announcement. With that said, I seem to see a lot of issues with firmware on the Pine, whilst the Librem is just plain out of budget for me. Was interested in how many people here run a Linux mobile as a daily driver, and how has your experience been?...

EddoWagt,

It would be awesome if we could just install whatever like we can on pcs. On phones you still need a developer to make a specific rom for that device, we were close with Generic System Images (GSIs), but I don’t think they really went anywhere

EddoWagt,

Graphene OS isn’t anymore Linux than any other Android rom

EddoWagt,

The squares are the timeline of activity

EddoWagt,

It took me a moment as well

EddoWagt,

The game is pretty good, but it definitely does get pretty repetitive. Especially the side missions which pretty much all come down to tracking some footsteps and killing a few enemies

EddoWagt,

Oto music is really good, but not open source unfortunately. Replaced it with Retro music player and to be honest it’s just as good

EddoWagt,

It’s a feature that no one wants and is annoying and badly thought out but you can turn it off but they haven’t disabled any functionality to add this feature

So it’s just more unnecessary bloat

Why didn't anyone remind me the dual booting exists?

I was talking to my dad yesterday and he talked about how he dual booted windows and Linux in his college days. I immediately left to download Ubuntu, I feel so dumb for forgetting it’s an option. I literally only use windows so I can play Fortnite with friends. PSA: you can have both Linux and Windows, or you can use a vm in...

EddoWagt,

Partitioning is great with a boot partition for each OS

Until Windows eats your Linux boot partition. I’ve learned my lesson, I only dual boot with separate drives now

EddoWagt,

A couple of years ago, don’t know exactly, but maybe 2018? Somewhere around there at least

EddoWagt,

It feels like I had a stroke at least

EddoWagt,

Proper CAD software :(

EddoWagt,

CAD, AutoCAD is just a CAD program

EddoWagt,

Ah nevermind, yeah at home/work I use SolidWorks and Fusion 360

EddoWagt,

I feel like it’s a rule made up by someone who didn’t agree with the double step rule

“Oh, your pawn can do a double step? Well, my pawn can capture yours anyways!”

EddoWagt,

All these steam deck competitors use windows, so no, they can’t

Next smartphone I buy, which one do you recommend?

Things that make me angry about my current smartphone Samsung Galaxy S21Ultra on a Verizon plan is the mandatory software updates in which they install WITHOUT MY PERMISSION stupid apps like Netflix and addictive gambling games and stacking block games and Candy crush. God knows what else they install without my permission. I...

EddoWagt,

It is google Android but they do not pay for the name so they call it ‘FairphoneOS’.

That’s not how that works, they call it FairphoneOS because they added their own customizations. Default Android is pretty barebones nowadays so nobody uses that. You dont have to pay Google to use the Android name

EddoWagt,

In the end I just split my SSD and installed Linux next to Windows.

That’s all fun and all until windows decides to wipe your Linux bootloader for no apparent reason

EddoWagt,

Wait what tool are you talking about?

EddoWagt,

In Belgium they even use Facebook Messenger as the default messaging app… There is little hope in people

EddoWagt,

Apart from most of the internet

EddoWagt,

Well that’s the entire point of Niagara Launcher

EddoWagt,

Depends on how many applications you have I guess, I keep my number of applications down, so the amount per letter is at max like 5 or 6, so searching doesn’t take a long time at all

EddoWagt,

I don’t know how much that 8350 uses at idle, but that cpu is really old now and certainly not known for being power efficiënt. Honestly I think you’re better off getting something more modern, if you buy used it doesn’t have to be expensive either.

EddoWagt,

It’s fat and slow

With modern hardware neither of those really are an issue. You can get a 1 TB nvme ssd for €50 and 2 TB for less than a 100. That should lend you plenty of storage and speed

EddoWagt,

I have a Deezer subscription and use an application called Deemix to download all my music in FLAC format. I’m not sure if there’s still a download available for Deemix, but there are alternatives as well

EddoWagt,

Alice in borderlands was pretty good, although the conclusion of season 2 didn’t feel satisfactory and the teaser for season 3 in that last episode was even worse imo

EddoWagt,

Same, I had to login to steam by solving one of these and I just couldn’t… Not sure why it’s so difficult all of a sudden

EddoWagt,

I haven’t played the games and even I knew the movie wasn’t accurate to the games, although there are a lot of references according to friends. The movie isn’t very good, a few plot points could easily be explained away, typical “I don’t have time to explain” type stuff. But it could still be a decent watch, although don’t expect to get scared because it’s not very scary

EddoWagt,

Electric water cookers apparently don’t work so well on 110V

EddoWagt,

I couldn’t remember the word, in Dutch it’s called a ‘water koker’, which literally translates to water cooker, so I just used that

EddoWagt,

Me too, raw water is certainly the tastiest

EddoWagt,

Might be more difficult to do when you wake up as you have the chance to actually have no fucking clue what’s going on

EddoWagt,

Then why not call it “Windows subsystem of Linux”? Changes the meaning of the sentence completely

EddoWagt,

Don’t worry, you can remove your nose today! As long as it is nog a requirement to put it back on, you should be fine for the foreseeable future

EddoWagt,

The problem is that they’ll just fuck off to a country with less taxes, so you’ll lose all the taxes that they paid before as well

EddoWagt,

I’m not going to pretend I can hear the difference, but I have plenty of storage so I don’t care. I like having the best version available

EddoWagt,

What do you even do in that situation, can’t really get any more opposite than that

EddoWagt,

This makes my whole life feel like a lie, I really do associate tomatoes with southern Europe and potatoes with northern Europe

EddoWagt,

hoping to get adults’ seemingly godlike intuition for spelling words.

Dit you manege to sucseed dough?

EddoWagt,

It was a targeted attack

EddoWagt,

Pretty much all junk which isn’t human readable is tracking info

EddoWagt,

Yeah it doesn’t work for every website, but it’s an okay starting point

EddoWagt,

Im using a hard drive

Yeah that explains a lot… An ssd will make a giant difference, and they’re really cheap right now

EddoWagt,

You can train a cat to shit in the toilet and flush. Also, we accidently locked our cat out of access to the litter box at night ones and he shat in the corner of a closet, which I honestly just found very sad but polite

EddoWagt,

I have not, you have to train them from a really young age as cats get stubborn when they get older. We got our cat from a shelter, so we never got the chance to try. but basically you have to start with getting a litterbox which you can put on the toilet, after a while you can remove it and they keep dumping their load there. Not sure how you would get them to flush, but I have heard of cats doing just that

EddoWagt,

I’m not against distros as a whole, some extra work will be inevitable because people have different preferences, but it feels like a waste having a Firefox package for arch, ubuntu, fedora and Debian while essentially all being identical. Indeed flatpak isn’t perfect yet, but it works great for me and it’s steadily improving
