@vsnmaryland This is the same judge who issued the injunction it looks like?

Alston issued an 18-page opinion Tuesday evening to lift the injunction. He said the allegations that the removal efforts amounted to grave desecration “were, at best, ill-informed and, at worst, inaccurate.”

Aight, good to know he's changed his mind.

Some of the figures also on the statue include a Black woman depicted as “Mammy” holding what is said to be the child of a white officer, and an enslaved man following his owner to war. ... He noted that the statue depicts, among other things, a “slave running after his ‘massa’ as he walks down the road. What is reconciling about that?” asked Alston, an African American who was appointed to the bench in 2019 by then-President Donald Trump.

If I were this judge I'd be kicking myself for issuing the injunction in the first place. What craven ghoul would defend this rock?

You guys gotta stop making me call you out like this.

When I rotate a layer, and I want to rotate it by 270 degrees, you cap me out at 180 degrees. But I know you are perfectly capable of understanding how to rotate an image by 270 degrees, because you let me rotate by -90 degrees. You know. That's how circles work? You don't think I'm gonna use the crappy little slider to rotate an image by -92.09 degrees do you? Let me just type in an angle, any angle, and convert it to whatever you need after I mouse out of the field.

A case for preemptively defederating with Threads (kbin.social)

With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...

HarkMahlberg, (edited )
@HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

Reposting this discussion for posterity

Big takeaways, emphasis preserved from the original:

Threads is entering a space in the fediverse which is dominated by Mastodon, so it's Mastodon and other fediverse microblogging services (including, to some extent, /kbin) which will most heavily feel the impact of Threads.

Defederating another server means your instance will stop requesting content from that server. ... Defederation is about what data comes in, not what goes out. ... Defederation doesn't make you invisible, it doesn't block anybody else from seeing you, it doesn't protect your content, it only means you never have to see their content.

Firstly, the fediverse is a drop in the ocean compared to Threads (104 million registered users). Obviously, Meta wants everybody, but their specific goals in terms of user-poaching are far more likely to center around the ~350 million active Twitter users than the ~12 million fediverse users (~3.5 million active). The threadiverse [Lemmy, Kbin, et al] is smaller again, at something like 100,000 active users.

"Threads will overwhelm the fediverse with their inferior content and culture." Like the EEE fears, this one is legitimate but once again something that will primarily be felt by microblogging providers (/kbin included). Toxic users, advertisers, etc. can push garbage into feeds all day, but they will largely not be targeting the threadiverse because there's some 100 million sets of eyes to put that crap in front of on the microblogging side and it will be difficult-to-impossible for them to push that content into Lemmy/kbin threads from their interface that was never made to interact with the threadiverse.

Is there any chance Meta has good intentions? No. But it might have intentions that are both self-serving and fediverse-neutral. The absolute best intention I can possibly ascribe to Meta is that joining the fediverse is a CYA (cover your ass) mechanism to head off regulations, especially in the EU, [e.g.] the newly-applicable Digital Markets Act ...

HarkMahlberg,
@HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

If Threads puts out so much more content as to effectively make other federated entities irrelevant, the character of the Fediverse changes such that it is no longer what it is today.

A fun time to bring up the concept of Eternal September.

HarkMahlberg,
@HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

To put my own skin in the game, I quite like the microblogging side of kbin. I like that I can swap between the thread and blog sides, I like that I can combine them into one view if I choose, and I like that I don't need a separate account to use either service. Using kbin's microblog was the first time I ever blogged, period. I'd hate to see that stream be overwhelmed by Threads users.

In times like this, especially when the original twitter post gets ratio'd to shit, it's important to evaluate where they're getting their numbers. I see they post a link to Rumble. I've never heard of this before, what is it?

This was a concern raised when Reddit updated the way blocking worked to make posts mutually invisible, between the blocked and the blocker. Some sort of scam had a cadre of dedicated users calling them out everywhere they went on Reddit. When blocking became mutual, i.e. the anti-scammers could no longer see the scammers' posts, it was believed the scammers would have a way easier time finding Marks.

Stranger still, the other screenshot you posted did have the "Allow contacts to add me" checkbox checked, but it only appears when you tap "Add Friends." When you leave that screen and return, the checkbox is always checked. It makes me think it's a setting solely applicable to that screen, like just for the "Find Friends" button, and not to your profile as a whole. IDK if that even makes sense.

The developer is closely linked to Swedish publisher Paradox Interactive, which tests, markets, sells, distributes, and owns the intellectual property of all games by Colossal Order.

You do realize it was very likely not CO's decision to release the game in this state, right? Paradox owns the IP, they're publishing the game, they decide when it gets to ship, or else they won't pay CO. Game companies have absolutely died by going against the publisher and going bankrupt from withheld funding, e.g. Free Radical Design and Lucasarts.

Like have you ever worked as a software engineer before? Clients always set the deadline, and they're almost always unrealistically short time-frames. CD Projekt Red self-published, they had no excuse to release Cyberpunk the way they did. But we're not talking about a developer in charge of their own destiny here. We're talking about a developer with a client: Paradox. You've got the actual antagonist staring you in the face, but you're going to blame the developers?

A relative told me "you're too young to be so old-fashioned about technology," after I said I don't use AI to code, and seeing that I wasn't wearing a smartwatch. And I would disagree, I don't eschew new technology. I have a new smartphone, I have a new PC I built myself, I have a ton of extensions loaded on my browser, I run a Pihole, I wrote meager updates for my Fediverse instance. I love new technology.

What I don't love is that new technology often comes strapped to the side of a Rent-seeking subscription service. It's got toxic advertising forming a cancerous growth right in plain view. It requires an account and personal data and loads a hundred tracking cookies to share that data with a thousand third parties. And it's all held hostage by the company going bankrupt and turning your tech into a brick.

So yeah, I'm not old-fashioned about new technology, I'm just stubborn and refuse to accept the bloat they come with. There's plenty of new tech that doesn't have that, it just happens to look like the old tech that was perfectly suitable for us.
