In which I read Hamlet's famous "To Be or Not To Be" Soliloquy in a reconstruction of Early Modern English pronunciation. Actual speech starts at 0:33
Note that the "ache" of "heartache" is pronounced like the name of the letter H. Despite the folio spelling with <k> here, many speakers at the time seem to have preserved a contrast between the noun "ache" with /tʃ/ and the verb "ache" with /k/.

The structure of how elections in almost all of the US are conducted, with a plurality determining the winner, means that there’s a huge advantage to choosing to vote for somebody who has a big coalition and whose views are less far from your own than the other big coalition.
Let’s look at three examples:
Example 1:
R: 1000 votes
D: 1001 votes
I/non-vote: 0
Democrat wins
Example 2:
R: 1000 votes
D: 1000 votes
I/non-vote: 1
Election is a tie, with the winner decided by flipping a coin or other game of chance
Example 3:
R: 1000 votes
D: 999 votes
I/non-vote: 2
Republican wins
So long as plurality-take-all is how US elections are run, it makes sense for anybody left-of-center to vote for Biden in the general election.
Getting better policies means not just doing that though, but taking active steps to volunteer for and donate to candidates during primaries, as well as seeking out close house and close senate races in the general election to support Democrats, thereby shifting the balance of power slightly to the left.
If you live in 44 out of 50 states, congratulations. Your electoral vote basically has 0% chance of mattering. Vote for who you like the most.
If you live in 1 of the of the other 6 states, congrats, your vote has like a 0.01% chance of mattering, but if enough people follow that line of thinking it might actually matter, so probably consider who you vote for more seriously because (even though I won't vote for someone like Biden) I still would prefer bidet winning over turnip.

AMDs 7000 series APUS (and Z1) aren’t efficient enough, no performant enough to really warrant a real upgrade if valve is going for a console like experience.
Sure you can get 10% more performance at the same power level, but why bother? Valve had to custom design their own APU to hit their power goals, and there’s no way chasing that yearly 0-10% gains is going to pay off.
Even UTF-16 used by Windows isn’t fair because it needs twice as much space for hieroglyphs. Won’t someone think of the ancient Egyptians?
Seriously, now that most display systems can handle putting accents on letters instead of needing a code point just for á, a new universal encoding would be nice. Purge it of Unicode’s precomposed letters, duplicated Chinese characters, and duplicated-in-retrospect letters and you could fit another few alphabets into Plane 0.
But convincing tech companies to make webpages bigger seems difficult.
What the hell do you think war is guy? You new to this? Never seen someone’s leg blown off before? Ever applied a tourniquet?
Guy this is the exact definition of precise. Literally hits one guy in a crowd. Assuming this asshole is in fact HAMAS, then they literally did it with 0 civilian casualties… So you really better ask yourself who you are cheering for here. HAMAS is literally by their own reports still holding completely innocent civilians hostage right now, and I assure you they aren’t just playing Parcheesi with them.
HAMAS started this war by launching tens of thousands of missiles into crowded urban cities intentionally trying to kill civilians.
You can be pro-Palestinian without being pro-HAMAS… Please never forget this. In fact if you are pro Palestinian, you really have to be Anti-HAMAS. HAMAS has literally murdered Palestinians en masse.
Please for the love of all decency, find your way to the middle ground.
2d4+2 is the bite attack of a wolf, not a dog, a dog bite is way lower that the one of a wolf. Also, I guess I could have wrote better my proposed human bite damage as max(1d4-2, 0) that gives a average of 0.75.

Recently I stumbled over an article, about how to customize your shell prompt. What really surprised me, is that it lacked one of the most basic tips I learned nearly 20 years back: Always display a timestamp in the prompt, to be able to check how long a process is running or when it ended. (Don’t need it daily, but every so...
A person in this thread already recommended having different colors for different conditions like ssh and running as root, I havent seen anyone mention this specifically but you can determine if the current working directory is writable with something like [ -w “$(pwd)” ] and set the color to red or print a symbol if it doesnt return true.
Also I recommend putting all the code and logic for your shell prompt in a shell function, and using a substitution shell to put it into the PS1 variable like this:
<span style="color:#323232;">__shellprompt ()
</span><span style="color:#323232;">{
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> if [ "$(id -u)" = 0 ]; then
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> local PROMPT_EMBLEM='#'
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> else
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> local PROMPT_EMBLEM='$'
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> fi
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> printf "%s" "$(whoami)@$(uname -n):$(pwd)"
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> printf "n%c " "$PROMPT_EMBLEM"
</span><span style="color:#323232;">}
</span><span style="color:#323232;">PS1='$(__shellprompt)'
</span>
Now this is just a really barebones example, there is a whole lot more you can do like passing in the last exit code through the argv of your shellprompt function like this PS1=‘$(__shellprompt $?)’ and like print it out if its non-zero so you wont have to like echo $? to see if the last command failed, but you should be able to still do this. In my testing, running the shell prompt function in the subsitiution shell didnt effect the $? variable.
In my first comment on another thread about shell prompts, I posted my full shellprompt, it is slightly outdated (I just changed hostname to uname -n), if you cant find it feel free to send a message or just ask, and I will send you the code.
Also, a surprising number of people don’t know that precentages are more often than not represented as decimals between 0 and 1 as opposed to actually a number out of 100 when used in calculations (because the concept of a percent doesn’t really exist in math, it’s just a context specific way of formatting a decimal). A lot of people just enter 69 when calculating a formula that operates on a precentage instead of 0.69 which obviously makes the formula useless, or if a formula is supposed to output a precentage, they assume that it output 0.69 percent instead of 69 percent.
I am freaking out on how well distrobox is working for me. I buy a lot of games on itch.io and GOG, and neither have a flatpak. However, installing an Ubuntu container (max compatibility) and launching games from there just works. Okay, I have yet to install a GOG game, but it the Itch client works then what won’t?...
You may be happy, or perhaps dismayed, to learn that I finally installed Bazzite on my desktop.
Well played! Welcome to the cool kids club! I’ve actually used Bazzite myself for a short while a couple of months ago. It felt like a holiday destination with lots of cool stuff, but it was more opinionated than what I’m comfortable with. So I returned back home (read: custom uBlue image) afterwards, where I am in command for what’s found inside and where I am free to do whatever I will. Though, I did pick up some of the things I liked from Bazzite 😜, so it was not for naught 😉.
I did a bit tonne of sampling, with BlendOS and Vanilla, trying things out, but Fedora wins.
Very interesting! I’ve got my own reasons for preferring Fedora coughsecuritycough, but I’m very interested to know your findings! I’d have to admit that Vanilla OS’ upcoming 2.0 Orchid update is very tempting though.
I have Fedora Silverblue on a usb in case Bazzite does not like my computer,
Hmm…, perhaps consider the following:
Rebase back to Silverblue with rpm-ostree rebase fedora:fedora/39/x86_64/silverblue (assuming you’re already on Fedora 39).
After you’ve booted into Silverblue, pin the Silverblue-deployment with sudo ostree admin pin 0.
While still in the Silverblue-deployment, rollback to Bazzite with rpm-ostree rollback.
Reboot, and you should notice that you have one additional entry in the GRUB-menu. That’s the Silverblue-deployment where you can always fall back on; just in case*.
The above steps do assume that you haven’t pinned any prior Silverblue-deployments; as you don’t necessarily need multiple Silverblue-deployments 😅. Furthermore, they assume no additional steps involving Nvidia; but that’s mostly because I don’t have any experience dealing with that (thankfully).
I swear I will just jump onto the NIXOS (or guix) bandwagon if I ever decide to switch again.
FWIW, you can install both Nix and Guix on Silverblue.
I cast on the right amount, but the double points always give me trouble, especially since they’re size 0. But it has to be tight, others the stuffing falls out and the cat is sad.
Why, when I search for a community my instance is not yet aware of, does it sometimes not bring back any posts in that community? This community is in example of that....
Yeah, sadly not working on communities that exhibit this issue. This one (!lemmy_admin) is one. I have two posts showing on my instance, this one and another that seems to have been updated recently.
If I search for lemmy.ml/post/6417868 using my instances search I get no results found. The error in the logs is
