I really feel that nothing is changing because the people that have been in power for many decades set up a system the works really really well for them. Not you, not me but them.

So why would they change that?

sci-hub should help get you that paper

What are some productive things to do when you wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep for a few hours?

I’m looking for suggestions that zombie-me could follow through with. The problem is I can barely bring myself to get out of bed, let alone do a useful task. It just wastes typically 2–5 hours of my life as I wait for tiredness to finally (re)take hold.

I decided a few years back to give experiences not things.

The way I do that is with a $100-ish gift card to an airline. This way they can use it to go somewhere and make a memory.

Brush your teeth twice a day. Floss daily

Go for a 20 minute walk a few times a week

Don’t have a pet

Prevention is much cheaper than dentists and doctors in America

Pets are amazing but if you’re searching the couch for extra change for a meal they don’t need to be in your life.

This is something that came to a head in the 2008 recession. Most people, left and right leaning, were not happy with the fact that banks got our tax money, and the homeowner got virtually nothing. This was one of the reasons Occupy Wall Street protests started, and it was one aspect of the Tea Party’s organization with there protest of the TARP Program. Though they were arguing for a different solution, less spending overall.

But this idea that the government is more than willing to throw money at large, “to big to fail”, businesses but are loathed to do the same for the individual was more universal than what is seen today.

Anecdotally I’ve talked with people that have much more conservative views on spending and government debt but the one place that seems to have an agreement is that the American people got screwed in 2008 - 2009. While there are many ideological things that divide people in America I believe that this feeling that the American government is more willing to help out large companies (legally, monetarily, and even militarily) than it is to it’s citizens is more ubiquitous than is played out in the major media outlets.

www.mp3va.com

I’ve been using them for years. They work off of a “add money to an account” model so you have to be willing to put money in before you buy your music. They look sketchy but never had a problem but always use Privacy.com CC just in case. The down side is the UI Sucks.

I’m the 5th generation southerner and I can say I saw most of this growing up. I hate the bullshit “politeness” that is ingrained in this culture. I never felt anything said to me was genuine and I learned that everyone was talking behind everyone else’s back. Even worse when someone try to better their situation. It was known that “caste” you were born into would be where the community expected you to stay. Try to move out of it and well “that’s just not what we do, honey.”

Growing up I heard 100’s of racist and misogynistic jokes and comments. It took awhile after I left to start to understand that those jokes are not just something that is part of every party and gathering. Materialism is second only to God as to how good of a person you are. Any one that came out of the closet was served a community death sentence. They were just “forgotten” about when invitations were extended for a party or holiday meal.

Wow I didn’t know how worked up your post got me but thank you for it.

Connections.

I love the stories about how seemingly disconnected events at different times and in different parts of the world actually have a connection. Like how some random chance meeting of two people 100’s of years ago started a chain reaction that ended up with us having some cool new technology or idea.

Yep. Loved that show. It’s what got me thinking about all of this stuff

The ultimate goal with insurance companies is to have you give them money and they never have to give you anything in return. If they can get you to sue the other person, the insurance company doesn’t have to pay. To them it’s a win-win.

Weakly regulated insurance is a scam

Why Is Computer Security Advice So Confusing? (scitechdaily.com)

The key takeaway here is that the people writing these guidelines try to give as much information as possible,” Reaves says. “That’s great, in theory. But the writers don’t prioritize the advice that’s most important. Or, more specifically, they don’t deprioritize the points that are significantly less important. And...

GoofSchmoofer,
@GoofSchmoofer@lemmy.world avatar

One problem is that a great deal of correct security advice contradicts “common knowledge” security practices. Password character classes – “must include capitals, lowercase, numbers, and symbols” – are a standard example. That idea got rooted in security requirements for banks and such, and it was a bad idea even then.

I don’t know a lot about computer security - but must include capitals, lowercase, numbers, etc seems like a good idea, why is it not?

Negative motivation is the real way to make changes.

It’s great to have goals and positive things to look forward to when you reach those goals.

But to be consistent in doing the hard work to reach that goal it’s better to scare the shit out of your self by asking

“what happens to me if I don’t do the work?”

GoofSchmoofer,
@GoofSchmoofer@lemmy.world avatar

But honestly congratulations on your success. Seriously that’s some good shit you did for yourself!

Most jobs already feel that way. I’m not really talk about punishment from a boss but the impacts on you life/health over the long term if you just decide to not do the work.

What does your life look like if you decide to not pursue a big goal?

I get the frustration of a shadow ban, I got permanently suspended and I have no idea why. The only option I had was to appeal the decision but I didn’t even know what I was appealing. Turns out it didn’t matter. When I asked for more information on the suspension I just got a bot response of “we’ve read your appeal and we are sticking to our decision.” So I said fuck it and left. Deleted the app and haven’t been back in 2 months.

GoofSchmoofer,

What I think about is that you may have nothing to hide but that doesn’t mean your data can’t be manipulated in the future by bad actors.

GoofSchmoofer, (edited )
@GoofSchmoofer@lemmy.world avatar

There is no telling your future but from this one post I think you may find yourself more successful than you think. The fact you have realized that you are unhappy where you are is a big motivator to change that. Look at what you are planning on doing, studying abroad is a big step. It may not feel like it to you but it is.

I agree with all the other posts that comparing yourself to others is fruitless because you are not them. But if you really want to do something spectacular then go for it. What that is ? Who knows? And you don’t need to know right now. Just go out and learn about as many different things that you can. You never know where good ideas come from. Also meet as many different people as you can one big factor in doing great things is knowing great people. It will also make your experiences much more broad and interesting.

Say ‘yes’ to doing crazy (though non-life threatening) stuff

Take a class in some subject that you find really weird and/or uncomfortable

Ask for help when you need it.

Take a weird job

quit the weird job

Find a passion

find others that have that passion

get bored with that passion

Ask out someone that you think is wayyyy outside your league

I could keep going but its all great experiences and you will start to notice that you are caring less and less about the success of others because you are living your life.

Sorry for the rambling, but honestly this random internet stranger is actually quite envious of you and the life you have in front of you.

GoofSchmoofer,
@GoofSchmoofer@lemmy.world avatar

I get it. I’ve had those thoughts that you are having. It’s frustrating as hell to see everyone around you succeed while it feels like you are spinning your wheels.

For me I came to the conclusion that I’m a late bloomer. It has taken me many many years to just start to do something I am proud of and I’m far from considering myself as a success. But the thing that I can’t do is take time looking around at everyone else’s success, it doesn’t help. Actually it pulls energy from what I need and want to do.

One thing I have learned along the way is make connections. If you want the network of people that others have you will need to go out and get it. The fact that you love to travel makes this easier for you. Like I said in my original post, meet people. Make it your goal to meet 4 new people in each country. Most relationships will go nowhere, some will become your friends, and a few may be able to give you a path to this success you are looking for. You said you didn’t have a goal - here is one. It’s not inventing plastic or traveling the solar system but it’s just as important. As a matter of fact the bigger your network of people is the bigger the chances are that you will succeed.

In fact you got one person (me) in your network now. I don’t know what I can do to help you but I rooting for you.

What's up with this concern over a company called Apeel?

A friend of mine who is deep into conspiracies started sending me stuff on this company called Apeel all concerned about … pesticides? I don’t really have the time to watch all the videos and Instagram reels, so what is the issue with this company? Is it a legit concern or a crazy conspiracy? or something inbetween?

GoofSchmoofer,
@GoofSchmoofer@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for that. I had a feeling it may have been more conspiracy focused than serious (but that was due to the source I’m getting the information from). I really appreciate your write up you rock!
