Palpatine returned through clones and Sith magic, explained at the end of the story
The character Poe Dameron knows nothing about Force magic, which is why he says “somehow.” He is working from limited information and is not an “author voice” to the audience.
A) did not know that characters with limited perspectives exist, as an actor, especially since limited perspectives are often key drivers of plot elements in every type of story. For instance, none of Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet happens at all without similar lack of information from characters, and actors tend to know about those plays.
And
B) was unaware of shaky dialogue in literally every Star Wars media ever, and the fact that pulpy dialogue like this is a signature element of Star Wars.
I also kind of find it weird that this line got memed into being the ur-example of “Sequels Suck” by supposed fans of Star Wars, a series well known for its brand-specific dialogue choices, which may or may not have originally been intentional, but definitely is now.
Its not like it is the only example. The sequel trilogy has plenty of other annoyances just like the prequels and originals do. The problem for many is that palp’s death validates the story and actions of the characters. He lives and a new order pops up, then much of what happened was pointless. To me, picking on that line is a way of showing how much of a clusterfuck the story of the sequels is. They are amazing in visuals, acting, etc. Somewhat the polar opposite of their counterparts.
He didn’t live. He died. Then he was coming back to life and was killed again. Palpatine couldn’t even leave his chair at the time of Rise.
People can disagree on the story and that’s fine, - totally respect just “I didn’t like the story,” that’s very legitimate - just wanted to clarify that plot element
This was a case of harassment from one user to another. That one is a developer of a successful app and the other is the moderator of a successful community has nothing to do with it. Izzy was asked on numerous occasions to stop derailing every conversation and stop targeting the user. You can not like something, you can be critical of something but at least try to be constructive. They were relentless. And when a warning was given by the admin they came back guns blazing, now also making accusations towards the admin team.
We have NO financial connection to Sync. We do not accept ANY money or other incentives from anyone exactly for this reason also, about how it might look if things go south.
Normally we don’t talk about the bans in public because whatever we say people will twist the story make their own versions of it and run with it. So I posted what we had to say about that and locked the thread.
So finally I just want to say that it is unfortunate what happened but there were MANY occasions where Izzy was offered the chance to prevent this from happening. And as a moderator of a big community he has to be an example. Moderators should be held to a higher standard than normal users.
All this because he was expressing his dislike for ads in the Sync client?
I don’t see why its not allowed for a moderator to have opinions about ads, as long as he is not exploiting his moderator position to remove posts that disagree with his opinions.
Anyway, I know I don’t understand the situation fully so I shouldn’t really say anything about it. At the end of the day, each instance makes their own decisions about these things.
Hover your mouse pointer over those numbers on the webpage (which was coded by the Lemmy devs) - It says things like “2 points • 4 Upvotes • 2 Downvotes”
I assume the intended purpose is the same here as it is on Reddit - to flag spam, bots, and other intentional misuses of the platform. Maybe there are instances that don’t utilize the feature?
Guinan lived through the entirety of the development of psychology on earth and probably hung out with many of psychology’s prolific figures. I could totally see her hanging out with Frued and Jung at a bar in Vienna.
Meanwhile Troi probably got credit in the academy for being a empath. She probably wrote off a ton of courses that others probably had to go through to get her position. She has really crutial to some arcs in the show, but not for her therapeutic environment/style. Someone else should have been the ships psychologist.
Man, the “only a Sith deals in absolutes” line was really one of those things that sounded a lot better on paper than it actually turned out to be.
Even beyond the obvious self-contradiction, “dealing in absolutes” is such a weird attribute to describe as unique to the Sith… Like, the identifying mark of a Sith isn’t their hunger for power and control, nor their mastery of the Dark Side, it’s that they aren’t moral relativists? Really?
Actually it’s more of a George Lucas is terrible at dialogue situation, the operative word in the sentence is “deals”.
He wasn’t saying “Only a Sith recognizes absolutes”, he was saying they only “deal” in them as in they refuse to compromise or recognize nuance. To a Sith anyone that isn’t currently aiding you is your enemy, if they aren’t your ally they are to be destroyed. It’s not that he was trying to say there are no absolutes, he’s saying that there are other options in this situation, and that by viewing Obi-Wan as an enemy because he opposes Palpatine he is “dealing in absolutes” as in he is making this a life-or-death situation when it doesn’t need to be.
It was never meant to be a philosophical statement, it’s just a very awkward way of saying “Anakin we can work this out and compromise, you and Sidious are only acting like this because of the Dark Side”. Unfortunately this bit of dialogue was written by the same person that thought “I’m haunted by the kiss that you should never have given me. My heart is beating…hoping that kiss will not become a scar” was romantic and thoughtful, instead of the type of thing an emo teenager would write in their diary.
If you want to see what George Lucas is capable of without someone there to fix his weird choices, go look up the “Adventures of Luke Starkiller, as taken from the Journal of the Whills, Saga I: The Star Wars” screenplay, the untouched version of Star Wars that he originally thought up, there are even comic book adaptations out there. If you are brave enough to read it, you will very quickly see that George needs someone else to proofread his work and ESPECIALLY his dialogue, because the entire thing is a mess and practically every other line out of someones mouth sounds like a grand philosophical statement because of the phrasing he uses to give it more gravitas.
TL;DR - George Lucas uses weird phrasing and should never be allowed to write dialogue.

95% of all TV and movies are pathetically juvenile like that. Mature dialog and writing is the exception in film.
