What is the phantom menace about and what is the understood nature of the prophecy of one who brings balance to the force?

I’m listening to blank check, and while they mention that 1) there’s a prophecy about bringing balance to the force which dovetails neatly into the answer of their main question 2) what is the phantom menace about?...

The “phantom menace” is literal, its literally referring to the Sith. After the new Sith Wars in about 2000-1000BBY under the Sith lord Darth Bane the order was reduced to two members by Banes own hand. The order was then hidden from the Jedi who thought they had defeated their enemy forever. After a thousand years of the mantle changing hands we end up at Palpatine who is considered the peak strength of the Sith order but is totally undetected as the mysterious Sith lord even though he regularly spoke with and was around the highest of the Jedi masters

I think you’re trying to read a bit too much into the phrase “phantom menace” its really just a poetic description of a hidden enemy referring to the Sith.

As for what the Jedi thought happened, its described in the Darth Bane trilogy of books in detail. In brief after Darth Bane destroyed the entire Sith order in one move he made it seem as if the last survivor was killed by a group of Jedi while he and his apprentice disappeared. The Jedi had no evidence the Sith survived but rumors persisted over the years that’s how Yoda and Mace Windu knew of the Sith Rule of Two established by Bane.

And yes Anakin did bring balance to the force but not just because he brought down the Jedi Order. He was also redeemed by his son and destroyed Sidious and therefore the Sith order. Both groups had drifted so far away from what their power came from that neither could remain intact if the force’s will was followed

I only check in on my cities subreddit for local news otherwise I’ve totally dropped it. I miss the community and the depth of content on what reddit used to be but Lemmy is growing fast and has kept many of the same internet jokes so I’m content

Student loans are supposed to be an investment the government takes in its population. If it works properly then the money that the government spent on the students tuition is both paid back monetarily by the student as well as societally because now you have an educated citizen providing ever increasing tax revenue. If you make student loans illegal you not only make it impossible for students to educate themselves beyond public school you destroy the entire post secondary school industry now that so few can afford to educate themselves.

What needs to happen is cutting out all the middleman bullshit and just making post secondary education free with your taxes, at least a couple years worth. If someone wants to be a doctor or a lawyer or someone who needs to have more than a couple years worth then sure that can be on their dime. Otherwise those first 4 years are just unnecessarily saddling people with mountains of debt that there is no guarantee they can pay back after they are done

It’s not so simple I think. Anti-intellectualism is a symptom of the greater human condition. Part of it is the scapegoat aspect. If something has a name then it’s easy to point a finger at it, easy to blame the person who named it. Part of it is envy, people trying to tear down those who they feel are superior to them. Part of it is propaganda, if not caused by certainly exacerbated by.

Like many things in life it’s complicated.

For Obi-Wan it’s stated in a few places that Tatooine aged beings prematurely (headcannon being because it has two suns) so he makes sense. As for Yoda perhaps it was partially intentional to disguise himself and partially because of the dark side force nexus that he lived beside was a trial to fight and it aged him
