I totally understand the fear. Their history definitely doesn’t indicate they’re the best studio for the job. That said, I did enjoy Dear Esther and Korsakovia for what they are. Korsakovia is just a really creepy idea that I really dug, and I played Dear Esther shortly after my sister died so it hit close to home for me.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by studios stepping out of their comfort zones before, and I’m so desperate for Bloodlines 2 that I’m not capable of being anything but blindly optimistic.
I've played the first Bloodlines game so much (it's #3 as far as hours played in my Steam library) and absolutely love it and am in a similar boat that you are, except I know Chinese Room through Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (which I also love). I'm doubtful it will do well but optimistically hopeful that I will be proven wrong.
Idk, I always thought Starcraft: Ghost sounded promising. Actually being able to participate in one of the battles seemed pretty cool to me. Of course, the devil is usually in the details.
Prior to this thread I had never even heard of the ghosts project. Definitely could be cool, but I’d guess that’s almost a completely separate market than the RTS fans
We didn't. The new publisher (Gearbox) apparently did.
EDIT: Apparently it was already started by the original devs even before the acquisition, see the comments below. I must admit, the multiplayer was wonky so there is some merit to it.
I don’t think that’s the case at all. Gearbox is developing a mobile game to take advantage of owning the property, along with whatever they plan to do with Risk of Rain 2 now. Returns is from the original studio and is more of a love letter / farewell to the franchise.
Hopoo, the original devs, were already making this and got to finish working on it after the purchase. It adds new content and refines the gameplay of the original (movement feels better and the game just generally plays better) - it was also designed with modding in mind.
This was a project by the original developers, not by gearbox. The original game, while incredible, had stability, optimization, and probably most importantly, multiplayer issues.
The community had asked for a way to play together online without third party solutions, but the code base needed to be rebuilt to facilitate that.
