stardust,

What fps and resolution were you getting to meet the playable criteria?

stardust,

That’s great. I’m glad it runs well.

stardust,

Silver lining is players can finally be free instead of constantly being strung along year after year wondering if this is the year it will come out.

stardust,

People looking for that tend to be the ones most likely to throw money at strangers. Oldest profession continues to be the most predictable among its clientele.

stardust,

Them not bother with Linux says all there is to say about their anti trust cases. Only thing that bothers them about monopolies is that they arent one, and even when there is an opportunity to enter into a market where there is no competitors they don’t want to bother investing in it. They don’t care about open platforms or investing in it first.

It’s why they were late to getting a hold of PC distribution. And in the unlikely event Linux OS takes off be complaining about Steam’s presence there.

stardust,

With that mind set explains why Epic was so late into trying to get into PC distribution.

stardust,

And look how late they were when it came to launching their own digital platform. I’m not taking about games being on PC.

This is a company that saw consoles more worth putting resources towards and didn’t see it worth it too start their own Steam competitor even back in 2008.

news.softpedia.com/…/Tim-Sweeney-Says-the-PC-Is-D…

They had many chances to become the go to digital platform for PC.

stardust,

Yes that’s correct. They seemed dismissive of it even back in 2008 seeing more cons than potential in the market. It’s like the Windows approach to smartphones entering in after Android and iOS established themselves. Except even later with years and years passing as it became clearer PC gaming was becoming more accessible and it’s own formidable market. They missed a lot of earlier chances to enter.

news.softpedia.com/…/Tim-Sweeney-Says-the-PC-Is-D…

stardust,

Well apparently Valve didn’t get the memo. By the time PS3 came out and the further into the Gen it got it became clearer that digital was the way forward. And you’d think a company with PC roots would have gotten their own digital distribution platform started once steam sales caught on.

The whole everyone thought pc was dead excuse is a poor one because Epic took until 2018 to bother with their own distribution platform. That’s a hell of a long time and too many years from the PC is dead excuse.

That’s what I mean by many many many missed chances. They had over a decade to enter as it became more and more obvious the money there was to be made from PC gamers.

stardust,

Sounds like the same excuse that would be made back in 2008 when epic felt consoles were more worth investing in than PC and only seeings cons to the hardware, and took until 2018 to even bother to try to start their own digital distribution.

And here’s Linux in its infancy just beginning to start becoming a little more accessible to regular people, and potential to enter the market early and also get more control compared to all the platforms run by other companies they complain about. And yet, like before they don’t want to bother investing in anything themselves and taking risks to get established first before competitors gain a foothold.

Simple fact is for all the technical excuses they don’t care unless another company shows it is profitable to do first.

stardust,

I’m pretty sure that someone who does know their business figures and frequently has to justify them to shareholders has a better overview about what makes business sense for them than anyone of us.

Every time someone makes the business argument all I can think of Microsoft flopping with Windows Phone despite all their money. Google failing with Stadia and losing opportunity they had with hangouts to imessage. LG bowing out of smartphones. Blackberry and Nokia too late to enter smartphones despite prior dominance. Epic was so late into trying their hand at digital distribution until 2018 when doing it earlier over the past decade would have made entry easier.

Companies just because they have money doesn’t mean they know what they are doing. And sometimes even less than random people.

stardust,

For some reason I don’t trust new Star Wars products to be good anymore with how much the tv/movies were a let down the longer it ran. And everything is afraid to not tie into the original trilogy.

So it’s one of those cases where I would prefer a remake.

stardust,

Still got more trust in them compared to a random mod.

stardust,

Warnings make sense. Do you really trust the average user to successfully download a proper apk, and do things like check if the site is legit and check sums?

Windows has UAC warnings for outside program installs. Same with Linux once you start installing stuff from outside the repistory.

stardust,

Have teens not moved onto social media based messaging? Are they still using old school phone number based chats?

stardust,

What about hdr. I saw it mentioned for the Steam Deck update, so wondered if that is finally working on Linux. I do like taking advantage of HDR on the TV.

stardust,

When you look at number of sales they seem to happen the most years down the line. It’s more revenue talks when people talk about games making most of their games at launch, since full price is worth multiple copies. But, majority of those who end up purchasing the game during its lifetime seem to be price sensitive.

stardust,

Buggy unoptimized releases has also trained more people to wait, and enough people have been burned by supposed publishers that can be trusted.

stardust,

I’m not upgrading, since it’s more a companion to my PC. Majority of my triple a games are on my PC so games I play on my deck are ones where I don’t run into issues with battery life and adjusting the vibrancy of the screen to make it less dull was enough for me to be fine with it not being OLED.

stardust,

Does this have sponsorblock built in or work with the sponsorblock extension for safari?

stardust,

It’s sad because DLCs were a great way to get new story based content without having to wait over a decade for a sequel. Same with Red Dead Redemption. Seeing the map south open up and having no missions there that could have been used for future story DLCs was depressing.

I hate that so many people are drawn to spending money on online mtx. I never saw the appeal of spending money there, but tons of people love it. Kind of wish I loved it as much as they do so I wouldn’t be so bothered by the departure from story DLCs.

stardust,

Based on how late into the console Gen it is releasing wouldn’t be surprised if their strategy is 30 fps and then selling a 60+ fps version remaster for next Gen consoles, and then 18 months later a PC version.

stardust,

How much of that is a console and pc purchase, since multiple platforms can be 360 to Xbox One or PS3 to PS4.

stardust,

I ran into few moments where I tried to take an alternative route to take down enemies, and game deciding I had strayed too far and failing me. Game wanted me to just go straight at targets. Had timed where I did go straight ahead but I was going faster than the AI companion and got failed.

stardust,

Subscriptions, microtransactions, etc do seem like training behavior to mold the ideal consumer by gradually removing the initial price shopping and value assessment shopper might have.

I’m amazed by some the monthly bills people run up.

stardust,

Toss in the really active advertising around sports betting and you got the makings of the ideal human for companies to extract as much money from.

stardust,

Windows defender and checking files with virustotal.

Steam Deck Owners: What’s been your favorite game that you first discovered on Steam Deck and now you can’t seem to put down?

Looking for those games that you may have heard about but never tried until you got a Deck. Or old games on systems you never had that you’re trying for the first time. Or new AAA games that just released in the last year or two that you picked up for the first time specifically to play on Steam Deck and have kept you glued to...

stardust,

Snes games rock. They hold up really well in gameplay and artwork, and finished ones I never played before on the Deck.

stardust,

But people pay thousands for cars and still end up the product. I don’t think paying guarantees privacy anymore and if anything is an outdated concept that gives people a false sense of security if they still buy into it. Data collection is the rage now.

stardust,

This place is a reddit content tracking sub now? Why not just skip the step and directly use reddit again at that point.

stardust,

Not subscribed. Saw it in all and found the reddit posting peculiar. Just found it interesting seeing it shift from sort of a reddit alternative guide section and state of api back in the day to now a reddit reposting sub.

stardust,

Yeah, I’ve been wary of cloud based options so gone with KeePass and syncthing to leep things synced locally.

stardust,

TV shows is what caused me to drop MCU and Star Wars entirely, since it became too much content to even keep up casually. So I stopped bothering because the quality wasn’t even that great to warrant the massive amount of content being churned out. When it was mainly just movies it didn’t feel like such a chore to stay in the loop.

stardust,

Big difference I see from Linux and Windows is that they are OS that can be installed on different devices. MacOS is not the case, and even trying to get Linux to be stable and reliable on Apple hardware after the move to their own CPUs is a project in itself with Asahi Linux.

So I can see the lack of interest with how MacOS is a very restrictive Mac hardware only type experience for most people with how getting a hackintosh working is rather involved.

Goodbye Youtube and thanks for all the fish (infosec.pub)

Youtube let the other shoe drop in their end-stage enshittification this week. Last month, they required you to turn on Youtube History to view the feed of youtube videos recommendations. That seems reasonable, so I did it. But I delete my history every 1 week instead of every 3 months. So they don’t get much from my choices....

stardust,

I was disappointed it didn’t apply to YouTube when not logged in, since I’d love a clean interface without recommendations.

stardust, (edited )

They are still tracking you though. Removing ads is a reason to pay for YouTube premium, but it’s not to get less tracking. Less tracking is not the selling point or service offered by YouTube premium.

stardust,

Yeah, my favorite YouTube content has been the type that are just random uploads from people who don’t even post frequently or ever again, and just sharing something because they thought it was cool along the vein of reddit and lemmy. So doesn’t have that whole artificial production vibe and intentionally lengthened videos with begs for likes and so on, since there was no monetization motive to begin with.

Crappy thing is that those type of videos are suppressed and hidden by the algorithm that pushes the big channels to the top in searches. YouTube really pushes the personality/influencer driven content for obvious reasons, but it’s why I haven’t really fallen into the YouTube hole of endlessly watching it.

stardust, (edited )

Read the comment I responded to. They said YouTube premium provides them with less incentive to track them. I’m informing them that is not the benefit of paying for YouTube premium. Too many people mistakenly believe paying means they stop being the product.

stardust,

I’m not sure how having a paid account is supposed to lead to less tracking when the algorithm meant to push viewers into a viewing loop is made possible by tracking. Accounts with more information make for more useful demographic data.

Not having ads is a benefit of YouTube premium, but less tracking is not a benefit when there is a reason to track even without ads. For better products and surveillance. There is less reasons to not track.

stardust,

It really is quite something seeing people so concerned on behalf Google’s revenue streams, and dedicating such passionate advocacy for them.

I totally forgot how terrible a non-ad-free YouTube experience is

So I’ve been using youtube ad blockers since pretty much when ad blocker extensions were first available. Lately though I’ve been getting hit more and more with these messages that YT was sending out every 5 or so videos telling me that adblockers aren’t allowed. No problem, just gotta wait 5 seconds to x it out and then...

stardust,

What browser? It works for Firefox on my PC and mobile.

How are you dealing with pet food?

I buy a few kilos of dog biscuits at a time and at the moment we keep them in the bag in the garage, and decant enough for a week into a plastic kitchen tub. I’m worried about rats attacking what’s in the garage, so I suspect I want some kind of hard plastic tub, but I’m concerned about it being too big and awkward to...

stardust, (edited )

Large plastic container for longer storage with rubber seals to be airtight, and a smaller container for daily use.

stardust,

Or power button. Even the Samsung screen sensors haven’t been as reliable as the good old dedicated ones.

stardust,

Pins and passwords is something people can glance at to find out what it is. And there’s cameras all around. It’s why I preferred finger or face unlock in public, and worst case scenario I can turn off phone to require a pin.

This is a rant about ASUS and their RGB lighting software

Back in the day, I knew what I would get from ASUS and their AURA tech. Pretty simple, just choose what you want and go. My LEDs did what I wanted, it was simple. But no… no they said. Instead we want you to download most of a gig of bullshit to do the same thing, but with extra fucking steps....

stardust,

I wish that crap could be customized in the bios and not need software unless you want to change stuff through the desktop OS. I stopped messing with RGB stuff and went to rainbow barf due to not wanting to deal with the software. Next build will be no RGB.

stardust,

Is there a reason to get this over just getting a ssd drive and usb adapter? Seems like it comes out half the cost.

stardust,

Lesson is to make steps being even more patient and play backlogs and opt for older titles that are cheaper. Doesn’t even have to be super old. Could be just within a year. Very few games these days that are an absolute much play the moment it drops. Haven’t actually come across any of that caliber past decade, but maybe I’m too patient.
