scytale,

I released 2 albums and 2 EPs so far in the past 2 years.

scytale,

NYT - 1:42

USA Today - 1:05

scytale,

Sure, if you want your child to hate you until they are old enough to petition for a change of name.

scytale,

Not exactly, but pretty close, at least for me. 6 years ago, I nonchalantly asked my boss if I can relocate to another country. He’s pretty cool so he was like, sure. The hard part was getting his boss, and his boss’ boss to say yes, because it takes money and a lot of other resources to move an employee from a low-cost country to a high-cost country. By some miracle, everyone said yes. It was so fast that when the director talked to me, he asked me where I wanted to go (global company with offices all over the world), and I answered “I don’t know, I didn’t think I’d get this far”.

Fast forward to today and I now have permanent residency. Sometimes when I’m just chilling, it hits me and I still can’t believe I’m here now, with what started as a random throwaway question.

scytale,

Both! This was pre-zoom time so I was talking with the director over a webex call without video, and I remember I was doing the excited jazz hands motion by myself in a conference room. I only felt the nerves when the wheels actually started turning and the actual process started, which was a couple of months later, because that’s when I knew for sure it was actually happening. I just told myself this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I would be stupid to not take it even if I was uncertain of what will happen. Besides, if it doesn’t work out, I can always go back home.

scytale,

I’d rather not say, but somewhere in Asia to the US.

scytale,

Use Dr. Bronner’s soap. You won’t run out of things to read on their bottles.

scytale,

Not counting climbing a mountain with ice (and no snow falling), my actual first snowfall was in the 2021 snowpocalypse in Texas of all places. So it wasn’t actually a great time. We were fortunate enough not to lose power and water though, so other people definitely had it way worse than us.

scytale,

There’s a lot of them. I find it easier to classify by the store. For example, Costco’s and HEB’s (in Texas) store brand products are considered great (and sometimes even better) than their branded counterparts.

scytale,

Putting all the minis together is great. I sometimes don’t have time to do the bigger ones so having them all together makes it easier to find them.

scytale,

Same. Or maybe winning lottery numbers. Telling myself to invest in tech companies like Apple or Google in the late 90s won’t work because I won’t have the money or means to do it.

scytale,

After a bit of light reading and asking people who know more about philosophy than me, it seems I lean to absurdism. My take is that there is no reason for the existence of the universe or the evolution of humans. It was merely a series of random events that happened to end up the way it is. So it is what is is, I don’t let myself be bothered by it.

But that doesn’t mean life has no meaning per se. I’m already here, so I might as well make the most of it and live my life to the fullest. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but that puts me in the category of absurdism, rather than existential nihilism.

scytale,

Based on kid me who hasn’t seen it again since, Fire In The Sky.

A more recent one, It Follows, not because it’s some groundbreaking horror or amazing movie, but the dread of a force so unstoppable and inevitable that you can’t get away from it no matter what you do is what makes it scary to me. I had dreams after watching it where something is chasing me but I can’t remember even looking back or seeing it. And you know how running in dreams works right? It doesn’t. So I had to do the grab the ground and pull yourself forward move to run away. Anyone who has tried running in their dream knows what I’m talking about.

scytale,

Great new format! Thanks!

scytale,

That puzzle was very hard. The grandmaster clue is a great fakeout because of the first thing that will come to mind.

scytale,

I’ve never heard of this guy until reading your comment, and I’m glad I never consumed any of his content.

Tips on making your data less sellable?

A charity I’m volunteering for and a contractor I know insist I have a facebook account for contact reasons. Naturally I bought a separate device to use for that, but I was wondering if there were ways to make my data undesirable to potential buyers. So far I got the obvious tiennamen square posting and that gay putin pic, but...

scytale,

As the other comment said, it doesn’t matter what you post. What matters is that you’re using it. So just have an account for contact reasons as you were told. Don’t use it for anything else. Don’t put info on your bio and don’t browse because the more you scroll and navigate, the more data points they get from you. Also, if it’s really for contact purposes only, you can just use messenger on your phone and never install the main app.

scytale,

Oh I have a lot of recipes like this, all pasta based because it takes just 10 minutes to boil the noodles.

  • Cream or tomato based sauce - Microwave meatballs that are fully-cooked out of the pack for 3 minutes. Toss in the pan with onions and garlic, pour bottled sauce, mix in noodles.
  • Pasta limone with shrimp - Generously salt water for boiling noodles. Fry a pack of fully-cooked shrimp with butter, garlic, onions, and lemon pepper. Mix in noodles. Add a couple of spoons of salted pasta water. Squeeze half a lemon. Sprinkle a good amount of parmesan.
  • Peanut pasta - Dilute 2 tablespoons of creamy peanut butter in the pan with water until you get a saucy consistency. Add 2 tablespoons of soy sauce and sesame oil. Add a couple of spoons of salted pasta water. Mix in noodles.
scytale,

My bank has some neat online banking features that break down where my money comes from and where I spend it on. It also compares my current expenses to my monthly average so I can see if I’m spending more. I’m sure I can do better by doing it on my own, but for someone lazy like me, it’s a good starting point to get an overview of my finances.

scytale,

It doesn’t have to be black and white. As many comments have already mentioned, it all depends on your threat model. Sure, it’s literally impossible to be completely private or anonymous unless you never go online and live like a hermit, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to minimize what personal information companies get from you. You can still care about your private data while at the same time not sacrificing convenience.

Marketing Company Claims That It Actually Is Listening to Your Phone and Smart Speakers to Target Ads (www.404media.co)

A marketing team within media giant Cox Media Group (CMG) claims it has the capability to listen to ambient conversations of consumers through embedded microphones in smartphones, smart TVs, and other devices to gather data and use it to target ads, according to a review of CMG marketing materials by 404 Media and details from a...

scytale,

Yeah it sounds sus. Apple themselves published an explanation of how siri doesn’t actively listen to you all the time, so I’m not sure how they can bypass that.

scytale,

And here’s what I saw on a comment from another post about this. From arstechnica:

The company added that it does not “listen to any conversations or have access to anything beyond a third-party aggregated, anonymized and fully encrypted data set that can be used for ad placement” and “regret[s] any confusion.”

I knew it was bullshit.

scytale,

“I see no point in living if I can’t be beautiful.”

scytale,

IMO, The Last Jedi is an ok movie in a vaccum. The problem is it’s supposed to be part of a trilogy and it barely advances the plot and character development. As a stand alone film though? It’s alright.

scytale,

Do you need to link a payment method somehow in the app? If yes, that’s where they can possibly track you. Like when services such as streaming keep your credit card on file so you can’t use it again to abuse the free trial.

scytale,

2:01. Forgot where Moses was found for a second there.

scytale,

Maybe less splash because it’s a little closer to the toilet water?

scytale,

I live in a place that can be chilly today then warm and humid tomorrow. I always check the day’s forecast every morning.

scytale,

02:10. I unfortunately haven’t seen the Disney movie so I had no idea.

scytale,

One possibility: Are you on the same network (i.e. wifi) without a vpn? If yes, then both of you have the same public IP, so it’s trivial to figure out you’re likely in the same household.

scytale,

I’ll be happy even if he stops at Messiah, because at least he can end Paul’s arc and realize Frank Herbert’s message about the dangers of messianic figures. GEoD is definitely a difficult task to translate to the big screen. I think it would work if they take Children and God Emperor to the small screen as limited series shows.

scytale, (edited )

As a fan of both the book and the movie, I think there are different groups of people who didn’t like it:

  • The general audience that are used to instant gratification and explosions. These people will obviously find the world building and slow burn pacing boring.
  • The more open-minded non-book reader audience who can appreciate a movie like Dune but just simply found it hard to understand all the new lore and world building crammed into a 2.5 hour movie.
  • A similar group as the previous one, but who understood the plot, and found it lacking or bad, or just didn’t like the execution.
  • Dune fans who didn’t like it. We have to accept that while the film is amazing, it does have its flaws. I guess some fans found the flaws outweigh the good parts.

Your Smart TV Knows What You’re Watching (themarkup.org)

These TVs can capture and identify 7,200 images per hour, or approximately two every second. The data is then used for content recommendations and ad targeting, which is a huge business; advertisers spent an estimated $18.6 billion on smart TV ads in 2022, according to market research firm eMarketer.

scytale,

It says in the article there’s a privacy request option if you own a samsung tv. I went ahead and sent a request to not sell my data, although not sure if it’s effective since I’m not in CA.

scytale,

Did the artist officially release an instrumental version? If not, you’ll have to find someone who manually tried doing it by removing the center channel or lowering the mid frequencies, or do those things yourself. It affects the overall sound of the song though.

scytale,

Dumb follow up question. If there’s a way to reverse the direction the bed is being pushed, with gears or something, will that work? lol

scytale,

Dishsoap isn’t exactly soft on hands. It dries them out because it removes the oil on your skin. My wife’s fingers get dry and crack, so we use the “natural”/“organic” variants that are more gentle.

scytale,

No particular brand, but you can find them in specialty stores (i.e. Natural Grocers). If your local grocery has an “organic” isle, there’s a chance they have dishsoap there too. They usually have stuff on their labels like “No parabens, sulfates, fragrances, etc.”

recommendations for lightweight window managers for an old netbook

Hi, I’ve got an old netbook from Samsung that has an old Intel Atom CPU (Intel Atom N455 1.66 GHz). I installed Arch on it and am now thinking of a suitable window manager. I tried Hyprland (kinda expecting it to not work really) whick didn’t start at all. Before I had Debian with Gnome, which technically worked, but...

scytale,

+1 for openbox. It’s fast and lightweight.

scytale,

Wife and I were granted permanent residency. I didn’t expect us to get it as early as we did, so it was a nice surprise.

scytale,

2:00. Unfortunately didn’t know the Bruce Springsteen song.

scytale,

That’s why eyewitness accounts are not reliable.

Is linux good for someone tech illererate.

Now i’ve been considering moving to linux. I don’t have much of a history using a computer and find it tougher to use than my phone. But I also really appreciate the foss movement. I’ve currently got an old laptop running windows 11 I think and it would prolly speed up with linux too. But I’m afraid I’d fuck smth up...

scytale,

Linux has come a long way and is very user friendly now that even non-techie people can hit the ground running when using it. Similar to what the other comment mentioned, installing it is like 80% of the hard part. Just pick a distro that is recommended for beginners (i.e. Mint), and read up on a guide for creating a bootable usb installer. Distros like Mint make it very easy to install, you just need to know how to boot it from a usb drive.

scytale,

Not exactly childish but, assembling furniture. I’m excited when I buy furniture that arrives disassembled because I get to look at the instructions and build it myself. I guess it resonates with setting up and assembling toys, just with adult things instead.

scytale,

It’s a step in the right direction. Linux has come a long way to becoming a user friendly OS that most people can easily use. The main problem is adoption, since most people can’t be arsed to research and download a distro, make a bootable usb drive with it, configure the bios to boot from the usb drive, and install linux. Having it pre-installed makes it easier for to people to hit the ground running. That said, companies need to explore more than ubuntu. I think Mint should be the default gateway distro. They can also maybe give the buyer an option during purchase to choose what distro they want to try.

scytale,

00:50. This one was quite easy!
