raptir,

Maybe I’m old but I’m really getting annoyed with apps becoming so bloated with features. The podcast integration was part of why I left Spotify. I was tired of having podcasts pop up on my home screen. Tidal luckily is free from this for the moment.

“Do one thing and do it well.”

raptir,

Ha yeah I run openSUSE on my laptop and Debian on my server.

raptir,

I moved to Tidal + Plex. Loving it so far.

raptir,

How can they say it “failed financially” four days after launch?

raptir,

If we’re going “so bad it’s good” I’ll give you The Core.

raptir,

You said disaster movie, not scientifically accurate documentary.

raptir,

Are enough people playing this to justify ongoing DLC? I thought it was panned and everyone said just play mods for 3/NV/4.

raptir,

Ah yes, the old contract model.

raptir,

Nobody talked about death metal so…

How did Lemmy World become the default instance?

World was already the biggest by far when I first started lurking back in July, and it’s just getting more dominant. Before, there was quite some diversity in the distribution of generic communities, but nowadays the vast majority of posts that reach the top are from over there....

raptir,

I think there are two big reasons…

  • During the big Reddit exodus, a lot of people were recommending lemmy.world.
  • It’s a general purpose instance. People tend to flock to those rather than more specific topical instances.
raptir,

Did you know that mastodons were relatively short? Despite being nearly 40% more massive than modern African elephants, the American Mastodon was 25% shorter on average!

raptir,

Don’t be afraid to customize your install with YaST. You can add/remove packages before you do the installation.

You’ll need packman if you need restricted codecs for video.

Update with zypper dup as a general rule.

raptir,

You must have missed the top comment where it was stated that publishers need to agree to have their games on GFN. Activision not only told Nvidia that it was okay to put their game on GFN, they likely had developers work with Nvidia to iron out any issues in creating the VM that it uses.

Wine/proton are unauthorized tools - most publishers don’t care, and some even encourage it and help to fix issues (i.e., No Man’s Sky), but it’s still not officially agreed to like GFN.

raptir,

I did, I cancelled Spotify and switched to Tidal because of this, and noted the reason in my exit survey.

raptir,

get.bandcamp.help/…/1500006084082-What-are-Bandca…

They charge a 15% fee. So the artist (if independent) or record label (if not) gets 85% of whatever you pay.

raptir,

The newest part, which is Spotify refusing to payout what small artists are owed if they don’t hit a certain streaming threshold, is 100% on Spotify.

For alternatives, Tidal allegedly pays better and at least doesn’t do this. Qobuz is not owned by any big tech company.

raptir, (edited )

It’s not a minimum before a check is issued. If you do not have a certain number of annual listeners on a track you never get paid out for it. If you had 100 tracks that were each streamed by 999 listeners who each streamed them 100 times per year every year, Spotify will no longer pay you a dime, ever.

I think a key point of confusion is in the way they presented it. They talk about how many songs have “less than 1000 listens” and that those would only make $3, but then their new policy is to deny payment for “less than 1000 listeners.” If each of those listeners streamed the song once per month, you’re talking closer to $40 than $3, and that’s on a per song basis.

raptir,

Basically anything but make it with frozen vegetables, and vacuum seal your meat and put it in the freezer?

raptir,

I think making this mandatory with the option to opt out rather than the reverse maybe crosses a privacy line.

Is it really that different with a medical procedure? You’re signing informed consent forms regardless - it’s just a matter of if it says “decline” next to the check box as opposed to “opt-in.”

raptir,

So these children are driven to work due to poverty right? So isn’t the answer to try to address that rather than to say “stop using cocoa harvested by child labor?” Like I’m totally pro-non-child-labor-cocoa, but wouldn’t the kids just get other jobs then?

raptir,

Since you’re talking about city travel, do you care about traffic? That has been my main issue with any alternatives.

  • Osmand: solid overall, you do need to buy Osmand+ in the play store if you need Android Auto functionality though (the f-droid version does not work with AA). But no traffic data so you’ll get the best route if there was no traffic. Another quirk is that you need to download the region you’re navigating in - you can view maps online but can’t navigate without the downloaded maps. And downloads are large chunks - it is by country or state/province so you’re likely using a lot of storage that you don’t need.
  • OrganicMaps: a cleaner interface than Osmand while using the same map data. No Android Auto support. It still needs to download maps but can auto download as you go and uses smaller chunks so you can download more locally.
  • MapFactor: one of the early offline options on Android before Google Maps offered the option to download. It has traffic data but I’ve found routing to be mediocre. It’s also subscription based rather than a purchase.
raptir,

Have you tried venturing more towards the metal side like…

  • Lacuna Coil
  • After Forever
  • A Sound of Thunder (probably more rock)
  • Arch Enemy
  • Epica
  • Unleash the Archers
raptir,

If a request is for a generic person, sure. But when the request is for a specific character, not really.

Like make one of the undefined arms black.

raptir,

It’s tricky because the data itself is going to be biased here. Think about it - even the video game is specifically called “Spider-Man Miles Morales” while the one with Peter Parker is just called “Spider-Man.”

Katniss is actually a good example. I was not aware of the details, but the books apparently describe her as having “olive skin”. The problem though is that if you image search her all you get is Jennifer Lawrence.

That said, Homer is yellow.

raptir,

Someone at BuzzFeed is reading our Lemmy conversations:

raptir,

I’m honestly getting a bit disillusioned with Cast. I replaced all my Sonos with Nest speakers because of the better voice assistant functionality. “Fully supported” services like YouTube Music (that can be integrated as your default music service) work fine. But when I’m trying to use Plex or Tidal I run into issues if I try to include things like my Nest Hub in a group or dynamically add/remove speakers from what’s playing.

raptir,

The issue is with different Cast firmware versions. The Nest Audio is at 2.57 and my Nest Hub is at 1.71. The CCwGTV is likely kept up to date with the Nest Audio.

raptir,

Yeah my Shield TV is on 1.68 and it works so I guess it’s not the specific version. Still, the inconsistent performance is annoying. Not bad enough to get me to sell the speakers, but bad enough for me to not recommend them.

do you all like to play the GOG version of games over the Steam version?

With the use of Heroic game launcher, I’m wondering if you all preferred to play your GOG version of games over the Steam version. I can go either way but sometimes I pause and think, having two copies of the same game, one on steam and one on GOG, which one would give me a better gaming experience. For example, I may choose...

raptir,

I used to be a huge fan of GOG with the whole DRM free thing. But their poor Linux support just drove me to Steam. They promised a Linux version of their launcher for years. The request has 14,000 up votes. But they still won’t create a Linux version. I honestly don’t particularly care about the launcher, it’s just the fact that Linux is not a priority for them.

Combining that with the lack of GeForce Now support I’ve basically gone to only using them for older classic games.

raptir,

And Proton wouldn’t be an option if it were not for Valve. There was Wine but it was not nearly as easy to setup nor as compatible with games before Valve made Proton. I’ll give Valve my money for better supporting Linux.

I guess I should also note that I’ve been using Linux as my primary OS for over 15 years, so good Linux support has been my priority for a while.

raptir,

Yeah it’s not that it’s hard, I’m just going to give my money to a company that supports Linux.

raptir,
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Old brawlers like King of Dragons through an emulator or Capcom Arcade Classics
  • TMNT Shredders Revenge
raptir,

Yeah, Yuzu has online multiplayer emulation via local WiFi, or you can just do two controllers.

Shredders Revenge has online and local multiplayer.

I know Capcom has local, not sure about online.

raptir,

The fact that this thread has more up votes on the “remove the official from official trailer” posts baffles me. The first line of the description says it’s a mod.

raptir,

Again, it’s the official trailer for Portal: Revolution. I’m really not sure what’s confusing about this.

raptir,

As many others have said, the choice is not between antiperspirant and nothing. I use deodorant but no antiperspirant.

raptir,

Because it’s an excuse.

raptir,

I think everyone has it.

raptir,

Google gets 100% of the revenue any time someone searches using Google. What’s being discussed here is the amount that Google gives device manufacturers for them to set Google as the default search engine.

Steam Deck Owners: What’s been your favorite game that you first discovered on Steam Deck and now you can’t seem to put down?

Looking for those games that you may have heard about but never tried until you got a Deck. Or old games on systems you never had that you’re trying for the first time. Or new AAA games that just released in the last year or two that you picked up for the first time specifically to play on Steam Deck and have kept you glued to...

raptir,

Not a new discovery, but I rediscovered Torchlight 1 and 2. The Steam Deck controls make it a lot smoother to play than a mouse.

raptir,

You can’t really test a fire extinguisher as it loses pressure when you discharge it.

raptir,

We have three. One in the kitchen, one in the master bedroom and one in the garage. We also have fire escape ladders in the two occupied bedrooms.

I had to use one recently as our trash can caught fire. We had some towels we had used to oil our griddle and they must have still been hot when we threw them away.

raptir,

This site was made by someone who was active on Reddit a few years back. It was made back when Steam specifically provided support for Ubuntu and no other distros.

raptir,

I’m not sure unfortunately - Sonic Sage is a Plex feature and only Tidal has integration with Plex. It should theoretically be possible for one of the “playlist porting” tools like Soundiiz to make something similar because it’s just getting the list of songs from chatgpt and then adding them from your library or Tidal as available.

raptir,

Two main reasons…

  • As a backup in case your home instance goes down.
  • If there are instances your home instance is defederated from and the other instance is not.

That’s about it.

raptir,

For the first point… kind of but not really. Having an account on a second small instance still gives you the backup, and if one of the two goes down you can create an account on another instance as a new backup.

For the defederation, nah. I like lemdro.id because they haven’t really defederated from anyone except for spam instances, and they’re small enough that no one has targeted them for defederation.
