How is this mac? I’ve never had it, but I love (and hate) the Kraft stuff.

I’m using it, as well as my boss!

Maybe marginally. It’s pretty easy already to take an old tire off, especially on the machine.

Putting a new tire on is always the hard part imo. I usually let mine sit in the sun for an hour before mounting it.

It started off okay, but I’m about to give up on Lemmy after a couple months.

My main problems are:

  • The comments here are hit-or-miss. Every big thread deteriorates into pedantic arguments. It’s seemingly a worsening trend and is on-par with the bullshit you’d see on Reddit.
  • Lack of comment moderation in larger communities. If a thread devolves into off-topic arguments or name-calling, the mods should step in.
  • The default active post sort is pretty terrible in so many ways. It’s much too slow to change and you’ll often see repetitive content. Smaller communities tend to have no visibility, but instead I see 5 posts from the same large community.
  • The comment sort is bad as well. If the community self-moderates through downvoting, then why are downvoted posts near the top? I think this leads to toxic threads and pointless arguments.
  • Lack of any content. I wouldn’t mind a bot reposting an RSS feed or something into a community just to start discussion… But many are vehemently against that idea (leading to small communities dying completely). I’d argue the reason !technology hasn’t died out yet is because of the l4s bot.
  • Way too many politics. I’m so tired of seeing political discussion online—but here, you’re just bombarded with it, even outside of political communities. Better moderation might help keep things on topic.
  • Users tend to browse All. While this gives people an opportunity to see new content, I think this might harm smaller communities in the long run. This is similar to how threads lose quality once they reach the front page on Reddit.

Maybe I’ll come back after a year and see how things are. But as of now, Lemmy provides nearly zero value to me.

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

It’s the largest community by subscribers, I would be surprised if folks haven’t came across it by now…

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Is there a rule saying this community is only for world news? Most other posts here aren’t world news.

There is another community explicitly for world news, !world

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

I’m just over politics on the Internet communities. It’s exhausting and becoming increasingly difficult to avoid.

It’s not about being centrist or whatever: I have my side and strangers on the Internet aren’t going to change that. I don’t want to come to Lemmy or Reddit or whatever platform just to be bombarded by pointless political fights. I deal with that enough in the real world.

I don’t believe that getting into e-fights over one’s political view changes anybody’s view on the world—if anything, it makes people more intolerant of one another. I don’t understand why people don’t use that energy towards something meaningful.

What made you choose your instance?

Following the spirit of spreading across the Fediverse (and because my main instance is down so many times, because diverse reasons) I’m intrigued about the joining instance process, because I honestly don’t know what criteria to have in order to join another one if I ever want to do it....

I chose lemmy.world because it felt the most neutral and least controversial. I also feel like there’s enough “backing” behind it and feel semi-confident that it’ll stick around.

There was a novel material called LK-99 that was purported to be a superconductor at standard temperature/pressure, but it turns out not to be. If it were true, it would’ve been a revolutionary breakthrough.

Under-the-screen fingerprint sensor works less than half of the time. At night and in bed, it blinds me.

This is my biggest complaint. The “old” style of fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone worked so well, but they replaced it with this shitty one.

To me, it’s because the app is so polished and customizable. Other apps don’t really come close yet, but they might soon.

You can just hide posts from bots if you do not like them. Settings -> Uncheck “Show Bot Accounts.” I’m not sure what the point of this post is.

Some people find use out of them, hence bots being allowed here with an option to easily hide them.

Also, OC is not the cream of the crop. There’s plenty of terrible posts out there written by humans, as demonstrated by many folks on this platform. I can say that I occasionally get more use out of a bot’s post than a human’s post.

It’s 48 against versus 58 for keeping the bot (and 20 votes abstaining), where against is “the bot should be removed” and keeping is either keeping the bot as-is or modifying it slightly.

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Why not just go into your settings is hide posts from bots? I feel like that’d be easier than blocking every bot individually.

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Because you seemingly misunderstood the results of the poll. Your post implied an “overwhelming response” that were against keeping the bot, when the actual results were a majority of keeping the bot around.

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Well, your post implied the majority was for removing the bot entirely—which isn’t accurate. I was just noting that a majority of folks would like to keep the bot around, with or without tweaks.

But yeah, if bots anger you, you ought to just tick “hide bot accounts” in your settings and move on. 👍

Where Do You Sit in the Movie Theater?

It seems everyone has a different sitting preference at the movies. I want the ultimate experience: the screen completely filling my vision, like I’m in the movie. Usually the third or fourth row. My wife complains we’re too close. Then I see people way in the back and it must be like watching TV the screen is so small. I...

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Usually right around the middle. I had a friend who’d want us sitting in the very front row and I’d always exit the theater with a stiff neck.

Way too many. I’d like to see occasional non-sexual NSFW content in my All feed, hence not turning on NSFW filtering, but lemmynsfw is too prolific in my All feed.

I used to mod on SO and a few SEs, but deleted my accounts a few years back. It’s just a mix of low-quality submissions, over-bearing moderators/admins, and bad culture & etiquette. I still regularly use SO when looking up questions, but I haven’t participated on there in a long while. I’ve mostly gone back to smaller forums and mailing lists.

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Depends. I use vendor forums for vendor-specific Q&A (like the forums for ESP32, Mbed, FreeRTOS, etc). For other project questions, I open a Github issue with the “question” tag. Before, I used Reddit but it was rare that I’d get a “good” answer out of it.

Keep Oracle from deleteing free tier account/vps?

I’m looking to host my own website and mess around with some services but my current home server is already pushed to the max. What is your machine naming scheme?

I’ve ended up with a number of machines on my network, and a need to name them all in a somewhat logical way. For several years I had them named after the planets, which worked well until the PCs for myself, my girlfriend, servers and Raspberry Pi’s quickly summed up to more than the eight planets. I’ve broadened it...

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Recently, I just use whatever comes first to my mind. The last few machines have been egg-related.

At some previous employers, we used fish and salmon (king, sockeye, coho, etc).

It's a bug IIRC. It should be fixed in one of the upcoming upgrades: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues/1315

Lemmy.world is still on 0.17.4, which is the latest stable version.

0.18 isn’t even out yet, interestingly. Only the release candidates are out: github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/tags

I guess lemmy.ml is currently on 0.18.0-rc.6. Maybe lemmy.world should upgrade? I dunno.

There’s some more info here: lemmy.ml/post/1446622 (maybe you can downgrade Jerboa)
