Watch out for the icy patch!

I don’t even recall seeing it as a kid in the 80s, but I found it once I had kids and it’s absolutely our favorite to watch as a family. In fact, now that the kids are teenagers, this is probably the only one that will draw them out of their rooms to watch together still.

One of my favorite purchases in terms of usefulness, cost, and fun (relative) was these frigging ceiling fan pull chains. I saw them on some “things you didn’t know you needed” list or something. But for less than $10, they have made my life infinitely easier and they do give me a little joy every time I pull on them.

AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

Right. I never pull the wrong one anymore because fan=fan and light=light. I know it’s a stupid minor thing, but it’s great.

I was going to reply to OP with “They aren’t cockroaches, they’re palmetto bugs.”

Like, I absolutely get that these things exist and will be a part of life in Florida. But when we’re staying in your fancy hotel and complain about the bugs scurrying away from the light in the bathroom, you have to do a little better than argue semantics with me.

I go about 50/50 these days.

Browsing a bookstore will always beat out a website. Favorite books or authors will always get a physical purchase. Used books are cheap and awesome. And sometimes lengthy books are easier for me to get through if they’re physical.

But I love the convenience of my Kindle. I have a ton of books and can add to that collection any time I want. I can adjust text size, font, etc. Dictionary lookup. Syncs progress with the phone app so I can literally pick up and read anywhere.

AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

That’s like pointing at your shit and saying “everything is literally in the toilet” when someone asks what you ate. If you can’t effectively structure an argument, you won’t convince anyone of anything.

And since no one else has called it out yet, GTFO with your antisemitism.

I don’t often give up on books, but I couldn’t finish the third. Maybe one day I’ll go back, but yeah, it all went downhill after the first one.

AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

The movie is good, though I felt it missed a lot of things I found interesting in the book. (Don’t ask what exactly, it’s been a while.)

If you were bored by the first book, don’t even bother with the others.

Is the parka just to keep warm, or specifically to add bulk? Because I think that extra size is what really makes the 3rd on stand out and look more intimidating.

[OC] Portland (Maine, USA) Head Light lighthouse in black and white (discuss.online)

I had a chance to visit the Portland Head Light lighthouse and Fort Williams park in Portland, Maine recently. I thought it looked nice in black and white. Canon R5, RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L lens. We saw it at low tide, so I thought I’d try to capture the texture of the rocky foreground....

AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

Good photo, and you definitely got the details in the shore.

As a Portland native though, it feels so wrong in B&W. It’s not, obviously, but I’m so used to color photos and seeing it in real life that it’s a bit jarring.

Hope you enjoyed your visit!

What are some alternative to soulless videogame franchises?

What I mean is… sometimes people are very loyal to a videogame franchise or a company because they loved a game they released years ago (Silent Hill/Konami with Silent Hill 2, Blizzard/Bethesda with their respective golden eras, some could argue this happens too with Pokémon and Final Fantasy, etc). Ethical/consumer reasons...

I love these albums. I need to remember to look for them at my local store next time I’m in.

I was SHOCKED this morning when I saw a new Black Pumas that wasn’t a re-release of the debut. I actually looked up if it was real. But it is, and it’s really good.

AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

It actually WAS Community for me. I tried it a few years back and it just didn’t click. I think because Joel and Pierce especially are such shitty people. Tried it again last year and loved it.

Same thing happened with The Orville. I didn’t even make it through the first episode the first time I tried it. Loved it the next time.

Sometimes it’s all about the timing in our lives or the experiences we’ve had.

For the last week, I’ve been listening to classic country from the 60s to the early 80s. Anyone who defaults to “I don’t like/listen to country” is missing out.

BUT… I started a new job today, so I needed something to both boost and calm myself. First thing I thought of was the intro to “Go” by Pearl Jam, so the first half of Vs was my soundtrack this morning.

AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

I started out just wanting to listen to Tanya Tucker’s “Delta Dawn” because that song is awesome. Listened to the whole album and really liked it. Then just listened to some playlists/radio stations with that as a seed.

The Highwaymen albums are good, but suffer from 80s production. That group is a killer starting point though. Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and…

I never even considered listening to Kris Kristofferson, but I’ve enjoyed his songs when they come up.

Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn… And I’m still just scratching the surface.

AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

This and “Kick Some Ass” are fantastic songs.

I guess on the general topic of monetizing podcasts… How Did This Get Made was in town last night for a live show. Thought I might bring my son who’s a movie buff.

The cheapest seats (ass-end back of the balcony) were $55. Priciest seats I saw were $125. Before fees. That was a REAL fast nope for me.

I absolutely want people to get paid for what they do. I’ll sub to Patreons, I’ll buy (also overpriced) merch, I’ll deal with ad and sponsor breaks… But I will be fucked if I’m going to spend $70+ per person to see a live recording of a podcast.

A whole back when I got a Miyoo Mini, I went looking for original GB games that I missed. I found Cave Noire and it quickly became my favorite ways to kill time. It’s simple (but not easy), being a Roguelike offers some variety, and it’s just fun.

I mean, technically “Tom Traubert’s Blues (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen),” but Waits is Waits. I approve.

It looks like Lèon is for sharing (outbound) links to others whereas UrlChecker handles shared (inbound) links. Is that right? Or can UrlChecker also scrub a link before I send it?

AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks. I tried it briefly along with Leon and LinkSheet (also mentioned in the comments). URLCheck is hands down the best of the bunch, but its UI is so terrible and obtuse that I can’t bring myself to have to interact with it regularly. Will keep an eye on it though!

AcornCarnage,

While I would gladly take more years of him being alive, Carlin had gotten really bitter in the years before his death. Where previously his rage was playful and tempered with humor and wit, his later stuff was just angry. It was a disappointing change.

I’m glad that other posters have given you a broad sample of content, and nice to see a young person chime in. I’ve never used the parental info on IMDB, but relied on Common Sense Media for some guidance. It’s tough to make recommendations based solely on age, not knowing you limits as a parent, etc. But with that said, I’ll offer a little parental input on some (my daughter is 11, but she’s also the third kid, sooo…).

Previously mentioned things:

  • Doctor Who - man, I wish Jodie Whittaker had gotten better writing. Rosa was a cool episode to share with my daughter. Matt Smith’s run would be my pick for younger folks. Some scary elements, but tame.
  • The Hunger Games - yes! As long as you don’t mind all the killing. Highly recommend the books at that age too.
  • The Martian - I loved it and I think it’s a good suggestion. I just wonder about the appeal to that age.
  • Ready Player One - fun, easy, excellent popcorn flick. My son watched it over and over.

Ones I haven’t seen in the thread:

  • Firefly - Reavers are a bit scary for kids, and you’ll probably need to explain Inara’s job as a “Companion,” but so good.
  • Jumper - Teleportation, man! Another good read at that age, too.
  • The Maze Runner - First movie was good, family said subsequent ones were not. Can’t speak to the books, but they were certainly popular.
  • Men in Black - all fluff, but still a fun movie.

And finally, I’ll close with several 80s picks that tend to skew a bit younger :

  • E.T. - duh.
  • The Explorers - kids building their own space ship. Goes off the rails in the 3rd act.
  • Space Camp - kids accidentally get shot into space and have to be real astronauts.
  • Flight of the Navigator - the kids liked this more than I expected.
  • The Last Starfighter - play game, be hero.
  • Inner Space - honestly haven’t seen this in 30 years, but loved it when I was young.
  • Enemy Mine - human and alien stuck in a cave have to overcome their hatred.
AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

Okay, that new Inner Space looks interesting, but I totally meant the 1986 one with Dennis Quaid. 😃

Just finished reading Annihilation - strange book

After seeing it on the list in this thread, I decided to read Annihilation, and I just finished it. As others said it’s weird (I like weird, so it’s one of the reasons I wanted to read it). The writing style really reminded me of H.P. Lovecraft, which is to say it’s a bit stilted. I’m glad I read it - it’s an...

AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

I liked it. Authority was decent. But I couldn’t finish Acceptance. There was just nothing in it that made me want to keep reading.

But yeah, not anything I’d recommend to people I know.

AcornCarnage,

BTEs greatest hits album is a fantastic collection. Sure, sometimes their songs go a little too hard at trying to appeal to pop radio, but even then they’re still catchy AF and fun.

From this album, In the Blood, Rosealia, and This Time of Year are all great songs.

AcornCarnage,

Just a few thoughts…

  • Lemmy isn’t ready for primetime. It isn’t meant to be at this point. It’s very much a work in progress and for a lot of us, seeing the progress is part of the fun in being here.
  • Yeah, lemmy.world had some issues, but things have been pretty stable for me for a few weeks now.
  • I’m on Eternity, and no issues so far. But I’ll keep an eye out when lemmy.world updates to 0.18.5. Again, this is part of the progress. Sometimes shit breaks. If that’s a deal breaker for you, it’s totally understandable.
  • I guess ultimately, it’s just about what you’re comfortable with. If you aren’t interested in dealing with the issues that come along with early adoption, just move on. It’s okay. For me, I’ve been breaking and fixing computers for almost 40 years. It can be a bummer when something doesn’t work, but there are so many people freely giving their time and efforts to fix things that I can’t really be mad about it. I know how it goes and that things will get fixed.

Haha. Last night my teen was watching the MJ halftime performance. She was SO offended that they cut the rap out of Black and White because “it’s the only part of the song that makes sense!”

Start with the largest. Beat it up a little each day. Every few days replace with the smaller ones in a worse and worse state of decomposure.

Lots of money to just trash things, but you know.

I drew a duck for my little cousin last weekend and she very quietly said “it looks like a butt.” She wasn’t entirely wrong and I started laughing pretty hard. She bolted and wouldn’t talk to me again. I felt so bad.

I prefer A Mighty Wind to Guffman, but still a good rec. And American Movie is an all-time fav.

Common if you grew up with HBO in the 80s and 90s, otherwise maybe not so much.

I recently had about $40 of Play Store credit that was inaccessible to me for weeks. Google support just kept telling me “Okay, wait 24 hours and it should be good now.”

FINALLY someone got it straightened out, but during the course of it, I had to explain to support what Stadia was and why I didn’t have a gift card number.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single episode, but The O.C. had great music. I had enjoyed Phantom Planet’s first album and loved this one. Only later did I discover this song had blown up like it did.

Can you recommend books with meme culture humor?

No, I am serious about this. I wish to get back into the learning of reading, but as a beginner I am repelled by the intense use of vocabulary, literary devices of classical literature books or intense and difficult-to-follow storyline of modern day fiction. I want to read a book that is clearly made with people like me in mind....

AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

I think you should try Christopher Moore. Suggested starting point: Lamb.

Here’s how it starts: six year old Jesus and his little brother are playing a game where the brother kills a lizard with a rock, then Jesus puts it in his mouth to resurrect it.

His humor is irreverent, absurd, and constant. The stories are all grounded in the real world though, so you won’t struggle to understand lore, settings, or language. Very easy to read.

AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t even realize there was one.

Real quick: The Folk Implosion are together again and put out an album today collecting the music they wrote for KIDS plus some other things. They’re also working on new music.
