olympicyes,

A friend of mine from Hawaii would go to Las Vegas for their class reunions. So many left Hawaii that it is t practical to hold it there.

olympicyes,

When I was 15 I was really concerned that I’d always be attracted to 14 year old girls. I’m in my 40s now and 30 year olds look like babies to me.

olympicyes,

OP started another thread asking how to pirate Roxio…

olympicyes,

Games like that just reinforce that a large segment of the gaming population will prioritize Windows, and developers go where the players are. I used to dual boot windows but now run windows as a VM with a VFIO gpu. Works great but it’s annoying to need that for just a few applications.

olympicyes,

Ubuntu 23.10 is the first mainstream Linux desktop distro that I think could be good enough for many windows users. Windows really needs to fumble for this to happen though.

olympicyes,

A half measure on this for iPhone users is Apple iTunes Match. It syncs your library to your phone for $25/year. It’s especially useful if the music you like isn’t on Spotify.

olympicyes,

You’re right. What you really need is a tv that reacts less bad to being online. It’s a shame Logitech killed the Harmony because dumbing down your tv successfully generally requires a universal remote.

olympicyes,

Activities are the killer app of Harmony. How do you set it to switch inputs on the various devices?

olympicyes,

In our case we have some devices connected to a receiver (Apple TV) and others to TV (game systems). We use ARC for audio for those devices. I suppose it’s easier if everything is connected to TV for that purpose.

olympicyes,

It seems like it’s more to prevent a fraudster from redirecting your mail without your authorization. The article is just indicating that there is a method for people who don’t use the internet.

olympicyes,

I’d normally agree with you but not practical if you’re adding onions to your hotdog at the baseball game.

olympicyes,
olympicyes,

The article said good service stores so I assume it’s businesses buying these onions, not grocery shoppers.

olympicyes,

I can’t imagine the gas station attendant chopping onions for the minimart. You hear horror stories on sites like this from ex fast-food employees. The thing that seems to be particularly dangerous is any dispenser with long tubes, eg ice cream, beer, soda.

olympicyes,

I’m starting to think you guys don’t leave the house often.

olympicyes,

Be sincere. It’s cool you like all those things, just take yourself seriously. Present yourself in the best light and stick to the facts. Sounds like you’re looking for companionship and so make it easy for the reader to understand what they are getting into when dating you. Make sure your photos are flattering, honest, and not too goofy. Do include fun facts about yourself if they aren’t too self deprecating and would offer the other person an icebreaker.

olympicyes,

I had one of these. I sold it 10 years ago for about double what they cost new when I bought it. For a period of time they couldn’t give these things away and I’m fairly certain I bought mine open box at MicroCenter.

olympicyes,

Apple never sold this dongle. Belkin did. The video card typically has two connectors and this allows you to use a second standard monitor, which was not common at the time.

olympicyes,

I’m fairly certain that Apple’s dongles connect an ADC monitor to a DVI video card. The Belkin connector does the opposite. I’m not positive Apple didn’t make a similar Adapter but i know I paid more like $30 for the Belkin adapter I bought for a PowerMac G4 tower.

olympicyes,

I cannot understand why news organizations and large companies wouldn’t want to run official communication through Mastodon. I understand the network effect but allowing your employees to create a Twitter account is a bit like letting them officially do business with their personal AOL email account. I don’t think Mastodon is even close to perfect but it gives the publisher a huge amount of control.

olympicyes,

The business of the newspaper is to publish news. The problem is that XTwitter is not a news publishing platform and their recent changes make it almost impossible to figure out what is real or not. So many posts are made to look like news releases but there is not one bit of parody in them. If someone wants to have their own private account, fine, but their official work ought to not be interfered with by trolls and people with a malicious agenda.

olympicyes,

Wasn’t there an article recently about how fines are fees?

olympicyes,

This is more or less why I voted for Biden.

olympicyes,

For the most part I agree with you but generally want controls remapped to match current conventions. A lot of PS2 games are hard to play because they were making button layouts up as they went and it interferes with my muscle memory!

olympicyes,

I used to insist on playing games inverted but at some point I switched and now I feel your pain!

olympicyes,

Thanks for clarifying. I misread that because it’s so unusual! Maybe they were trying to make it “fun”.

olympicyes,

I know that’s a joke but even Apple offers that in iCloud. I for sure use different passwords but forget that obscured email is even an option.

olympicyes,

For iPhone users, you can press a long click to preview. I’m using Voyager as a PWA and so far it’s better than all the native apps I’ve tried. I don’t really use Lemmy on the desktop because the url isn’t muscle memory yet.

olympicyes,

My understanding is that the result of the LinkedIn case is that you can scrape data that you have permission to view but not to access data that you were not intended to. The end result that ClickWrap agreements are unenforceable.

olympicyes,

Depending on your configuration, you can pass a gpu to your Windows VM so you don’t even lose any performance if you use Windows for gaming. All you need is an iGPU and a few extra cores/ram to handle the host overhead.

olympicyes,

He also fails to recognize how intimidating his height can be to people. I’m not surprised the door dash driver reacted the way he did. This kid is a menace.

olympicyes,

When my daughter was 7 or 8 years old, I caught her answering questions on quora on topics that she knew nothing about. Something to keep in mind.

olympicyes,

She was answering questions about ear piercings which she’d never had, but yes you’re probably right!

olympicyes,

I can tell you’re young and single by the price of your subscription.

olympicyes,

FWIW there’s an iOS app called Amplosion that does just that.

olympicyes,

You are taking support to mean tech support. OP meant support as in rah rah I’m cheering for you. I’m that context, I have no idea what message the original post is supposed to convey.

olympicyes,

I’m using Unifi. They are OK.

olympicyes,

I also use Unifi but it’s worth mentioning that Unifi Protect (current offering) requires an online Unifi account and a Unifi DVR, whereas the older Unifi Video required a local account and could be run on your own hardware. I like that my videos are not stored in the cloud, but I don’t know enough about how Unifi handles security to confirm that they couldn’t allow another user to stream video off your hardware directly. I’m not too concerned about the risk because I just use these for my front yard and it’s pretty convenient.

olympicyes,

I’d add smart TVs to this category too. I had a device get compromised on my network (QNAP NAS, not recommended), so I locked my network down pretty hard (UPNP partly the culprit). My Samsung TV began having problems. After a few rounds with customer support I realized I was running into a problem with a feature, not a bug. Then I disconnected my screens from the internet and switched to Apple TV. I figure at least then there is a little pushback to the data scraping. And FYI I saw the same thing with Amazon Fire that you did.

olympicyes,

Our cameras point outside but the microphones are so retry sensitive and my office window is near two of them. I’m sure someone could hear my side of a phone call.

olympicyes,

RSTP is the streaming cam protocol. It shows up as a url with rstp:// instead of https://. You can type that url into streaming video apps like VLC (video lan client) and watch your videos with no configuration. There is no security on the feed so you have to secure your network instead.

olympicyes,

I know there was an issue a while ago that you couldn’t connect directly to your cameras using iOS via the LAN. It had to go online. I remember now a hastily rolled out patch in response to a data breach. So to answer your question, I’m not 100% sure. I use my cameras like you do but this is an important topic for someone who doesn’t want their system online in any capacity.

olympicyes,

The multimillionaires that are supporting the union don’t are doing so because either A) it’s the right thing to do, or B) because the studios may inadvertently trigger the destruction of Hollywood because of greed. Whether because of altruism or mutual self-interest, it’s the right thing to do.

olympicyes,

“Cancel culture” is a catch-all slur. You can tell it’s effective because of how you phrased your post instead of considering who is being “canceled” and the reason for it. Bad guys are trying to catch a free pass by highlighting less serious offenses and calling it the same thing.

olympicyes,

That assumes that all actors and screenwriters make more in a year than most in a lifetime. In reality they work from job to job, paycheck to paycheck. I know a few people who work in production in Hollywood. They tell me that working on a tv show used to mean steady employment, but now can mean just 4 weeks of work for writers and creative types.

olympicyes,

It’s not even clear that it’s illegal to scrape publicly available data, so I don’t know what the TOS would be enforcing.

olympicyes,

I’d assume that everyone subscribed to news is also subscribed to worldnews. I see a lot of “cross posts” with very low engagement.
