Yes I saw this before. However the structure is quite confusing and not at all like Wikipedia. From what I can tell it also doesnt federate that well.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

I like this, although it feels a bit too short.

Yes the mascot is not mandatory, thats why I said bonus points. Fedipedia is too boring though, and too similar to Wikipedia.

Has a date, or ETA been announced, or rumored for the release of Lemmy 0.19?

I hope that this post doesn’t come across as impatient, or demanding – I fully understand that Lemmy is donation funded, and is created out of the benevolence of the devs. I am merely curious if any announcement has been made in regards to a specific ETA. I am certainly excited for its release, but I also completely...

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

There is no specific release date. It depends how much time we need to fix remaining bugs which are being reported.

The Atlantic Council report linked in this post is quite interesting. For those who don’t know, the Atlantic Council is a major “think tank” which is funded by billionaires and the US government, and helps to write US foreign policy. In the report is a section about moderation on Mastodon and the Fediverse (from page 124). However the report only talks about moderation in terms of fighting “disinformation”. Other things like moderating trolls, spammers or racists are completely ignored.

@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

Thats interesting because for me it feels just like before with Firefox. Also the yellow background for new comments is way too much.

Can lemmy users see when they're mentioned in a microblog post from kbin? (kbin.social)

I'm trying to contact a user on lemmy, but can't dm them (it's not clear to me if this is a bug or if dms don't work across instances or software, but either way it's not working). My next workaround would be to ping them in a microblog post, but lemmy doesn't have a microblog section. Would a lemmy user receive a notification...

Lemmy only supports posts which are inside of a community.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

Das löschen setzt nur einen Datenbank-Eintrag 'deleted: true`, aber die Inhalte sind weiterhin vorhanden. Ein Admin kann das also problemlos wieder herstellen.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

Stimmt, bei gelöschten Posts und Comments wird der Titel und Text nach einem Monat überschrieben. Das betrifft aber nicht gelöschte Communities.

@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes it includes community follows, saved posts, blocklists and profile data. Here you can see everything thats included:

github.com/LemmyNet/…/user_settings_backup.rs#L41…

Edit: I just noticed that instance blocks are missing from the export. Added here

lemmy-js-client already has versions for the latest Lemmy code. So you just need to upgrade to the latest version and adjust your code where necessary.

About your second point, there is !announcements where only Dessalines and I can post. We could post the updates there and you could follow the community via RSS feed to get notified.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

The only thing to keep in mind with 0.19 versions is that they are meant to be used with 0.19 backend. This post has some info about supporting 0.18 and 0.19 from the same client, but Im not sure if lemmy-js-client supports that as lemmy-ui only needs to be compatible with a single backend version.

Alright I will post these updates to /c/announcements in the future.

@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

You can ask in the Matrix dev chat.

Wikipedia completely slanders people it doesnt like. For example Daniele Ganser who helped to reveal Operation Gladio.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

Votes federate with standard Like and Dislike activities which are part of Activitypub. It’s just that some platforms like Mastodon can’t handle Dislikes.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

An Arabic Lemmy instance sounds like a great idea. There actually used to be one but it seems discontinued. Be aware that Lemmy doesnt currently support RTL text, but people are working on it and 0.19 will at least bring partial support.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

In this case it would be too complicated to keep supporting the old auth format. Plus we want clients to update soon because sending auth parameters in the url is not secure. Anyway clients can support 0.18 and 0.19 at the same time by sending both old and new auth params at the same time.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes afaik all the known problems with 2FA are fixed. It would be helpful if you test it on voyager.lemmy.ml to see if it works. Though it’s possible that lemmy-ui isn’t compatible yet with new 2FA api, not sure.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

The one on join-lemmy.org or in the docs is not straightforward?

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

No one lives forever. Though the originals are still very much playable, only the graphics are outdated.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

That instance list is built completely automatically by a crawler, no one approves instances before they are listed. In this case it was removed as soon as we became aware of it. Next time please make a pull request like that one, its much more effective than complaining.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

I am certainly open to implementing specific backend features in return for payment. You can send me a private message on Matrix to discuss the details.

Lemmy Development Update 2023-09-22

Some years ago we used to post weekly development updates to let the community know what we are working on. For some reason we stopped posting these updates, but now we want to continue giving you information every two weeks about the recent development progress. This should allow average users to keep up with development,...

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

Thanks for the concern. Personally I took plenty of time off during summer. Now Im motivated to code again, and honestly I would get really bored if I did nothing.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

Before 1.0 we definitely need to do an API cleanup, the paths are a real mess. However that will require lots of breaking changes so Im not sure when we can do it.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

When we are ready to publish the first release candidate, we will make a post that lists all the breaking changes. You can follow !announcements via rss reader to get notified about it. We will also share it in different Matrix chats, and I’m sure it will get upvoted to the frontpage as well.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

The post only includes pull requests which were active last week. Scaled sort was already completed earlier. It will definitely go into the next release, like every merged PR.

0.19 supports both page and page_cursor. We will probably get rid of page in 0.20.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

In case of pagination both old and new variants are supported in 0.19 (see my reply to fmstrat above). TOTP is currently broken so it wouldnt make sense to keep supporting the old version. In case of auth it would be possible to keep backwards compat, but keep in mind that we are only two fulltime devs with tons of other things to work on. If we spend a lot of time on this, it means less time for other important tasks. Besides you can support both 0.19 auth and 0.20 auth at the same time by sending auth as param and header/cookie.

mastodon.art defederating calckey firefish social. Cites behavior of lead project dev (dotart.blog)

mastodon.art has decided to suspend firefish.social from their instance due to issues with its administrator. The administrator of firefish.social was found to be boosting posts from a known harasser on another instance. mastodon.art takes a firm stance against racism and suspending full instances in these situations is part of...

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

How do you know that the Firefish admin was actually aware of any racist posts? That’s quite the jump to conclusion.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

Some of them are probably lurkers. Might be good for Lemmy to store the last login time, so admins can consider that when purging accounts.

What would you do with 100 billion dollars to have the most positive impact on the largest number of people?

My partner and I were discussing this over dinner, our ideas went from buying up land to finance organic farming and distributing it at the lowest price to crashing the financial system to “reset” everybody’s bank account with no possible recovery. Any other ideas?

Buy a major social media platform and run it into the ground. Oh wait…

You could go to sauna to get used to the heat, and cool yourself off in the cold bath. Sauna is generally awesome, and in Korea there are public saunas everywhere.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

Having kids is great. Don’t believe all the horror stories.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

I live in Spain and didn’t hear anything about a heat wave. In fact here in the north it’s quite cool. The only place mentioned in the article is Extremadura which has up to 38 degrees in this weather app. That’s a normal summer temperature. It’s easy to survive with plenty of siesta.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

They are a joke because temperatures in Spain are currently 40 degrees max (south of peninsula).

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

That’s quite slow then. I can torrent an entire movie within two minutes or so.

Edit: Getting 12+ MiB/s with a popular movie from 2006.

Free hosting for liberal/mainstream political instance

Lemmy.ml has long had some political conflict among the userbase, especially in communities like worldnews. This is because the instance is composed of both leftists (anarchist/communist) and liberals (those who agree with the mainstream political views in western countries). Additionally, the instance admins all belong to the...
