nobloat,

We’re all into lemmussy

nobloat,

That’s a bad analogy. A browser with 5 tabs is not like having 5 different browsers open.

nobloat,

I was so disappointed at Jerry Seinfel’a stance on the whole thing though. Which makes this meme ironic

nobloat,

Yea but I wish Firefox didn’t survive completely on money from Google

nobloat,

If I could, I would. Sadly being from North Africa makes it hard for me to donate to my favorite FOSS projects. There are many restrictions and even getting a credit card that’s usable internationally is a pain, and it only gives you an amount each year you can use online. Not to mention having a really low currency and bad economy would make even a trivial donation feel like a sizable portion of your income. My comment wasn’t a dig at Firefox but a lament. It shows how complex things are. The FOSS and privacy oriented option has to rely here on Google having enough money to give to it. Google having enough money relies on data mining. So the monetization of privacy-respecting option relies on other users letting go of their privacy to Google. While Firefox is a superior option, it is worth seeing how ultimately we are still fucked. Even the FOSS option survives through ad revenue of another company. This highlights the problem of FOSS monetization that needs to be solved. Firefox should learn from Thunderbird.

nobloat,

It was alright but I didn’t enjoy it as much as others seem to have done. Everything was so obvious. Donna tells her daughter that she will protect her so you know this will come in play later. The coffee thing was mentioned and I immediately knew she’ll spill it. The way the “why Donna didn’t die” was a bit resolved in a weird way, she is a woman so she can “let go” and give birth, which is so weird that the Doctor didn’t think about this (he literally was a woman just before). Ultimately it doesn’t make sense, someone passes a disease to their kid it doesn’t mean that the disease is now weaker. That’s not how inherited illnesses work. I love that there’s a trans character but everything about her is just them saying that she is trans, I wanna know more about her and not just her sexuality. It was handled good in the conversation between Donna and her mother but then it went a bit overboard for my taste.

nobloat,

Yea I used illness as an analogy. Passing something down to your child doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll get weaker. But even when accepting this, I find the resolution unsatisfactory.

nobloat,

Had me at “References >> 5 years old Chris Titus Tech YouTube video”

nobloat,

Lemmy is a global community so the provider I use in my country would hardly be useful to anyone else, you wouldn’t have heard of it. Maybe specify which country you’re interested in if you wanna compare providers available for you.

nobloat,

Software information says you’re already using Fedora ? Do you mean you want to switch distros ? If so, it’ll be useful to say what you’re looking for and why Fedora didn’t fulfill those needs so we can recommend alternatives.

I saw today the infamous pop-up of YouTube again that they will block the video player after 2 more videos if I keep using uBlock Origin. ** Google.

nobloat,

Is this a global thing? I never saw that popup and was thinking maybe they are directing this only at the US and Europe. I am in north Africa and YouTube premium isn’t even available (not that I’d pay for that overpriced bullshit).

nobloat,

We really need a philosophy memes community :(

I hope this is a joke because the Arabic translation is so wrong. It’s also confusing because Arabic is written from right to left so it’ll just create a mess. The translators are using “letter case” and translated it literally to Arabic. The word used doesn’t mean “letter” as in a letter in the alphabet but “letter” as in what you send in the post office. These are totally different words in Arabic.

nobloat,

It’s somewhat difficult to translate, because Arabic doesn’t have the concept of case in letters. Usually you can use “حروف صغيرة” or ”حروف كبيرة” which literally translates as “small letters” and “big letters” when referencing other languages. For the general “letter case” you can use “حالة الأحرف”. So it’ll be something like : تجاهل حالة الأحرف.

So here you substitute الرسالة for the correct word الأحرف to mean “letters”

nobloat,

Yes it’s always read right to left, which can be confusing when you combine English and Arabic. When you reach the Arabic word or sentence you jump to its beginning which is the first Arabic letter to the right, read it from there to the left, and then continue to the next English word when you’re done.

nobloat,

She ia using the “official” Mastodon app because I didn’t wanna confuse her first. She’s on Metatext now and the issue is gone

nobloat,

Yea I am using the “official” app on Android and didn’t have that issues. It seems to be only on IOS. She switched to Metatext now and didn’t have that issue.

nobloat,

It’s not even available in many countries. Even if it were, the price is steep especially in third world economies. It’s probably not that big of deal for many in the US but most people in third world countries would find it so hard to squeeze it into their budget.

nobloat,

I’ve written a hacky Bash script that exports my kindle notes and highlights of selected books as a text file. By default kindle lumps everything in one file and it’s such a mess

How to theme QT Flatpak apps ?

I am running Sway on Debian 12 and I just can’t succeed in theming QT Flatpaks. The system is in a dark theme but all the QT Flatpaks are using a light theme. I tried a bunch of overrides ans exposes the .themes folder in my home after copying all the themes. Nothing seems to work. Did anyone succeed in theming these apps in a...

I think EF channel made a video recently covering some foundations while installing Arch. Maybe it’s close to what you’re looking for

nobloat,

Piracy makes up for some huge inequalities in the world. The prices for digital goods do not usually take into account the economies of certain regions. I live in Morocco and our money is really low compared to the dollar. 1 dollar is like 7 Dirhams. The average salary for a normal job is really low if you convert it to dollars. So services like Netflix and HBO would cost 10 times more if you factor in wages and conversion to dollars. Why should we pay that just because we live in another place ? Why do these services pretend to be global and yet they are enforcing US prices on the rest of the world. You can’t even speak of physical goods because Amazon doesn’t give a fuck about Africa. Books would cost 3 times their price in shipping and you have to wait a month or so, not to mention that there are limits on how much currency you spend internationally. The fees for an international card are so high also. In short, without piracy 90 percent of the world wouldn’t be able to partake in anything.

nobloat,

Well, Arch is not inherently better, it depends on your needs. If you want up-to-date packages and don’t mind the do it yourself approach you’ll love Arch. I’ve used Arch for a few years and learned a lot from it. I love the minimalism. Now I switched to a minimal install of Sway on Debian because I just want a tried and tested stable system. I am at a point of my life where I want a really boring install. Instead of tinkering with the system I use it as a base to learn more on the server side, and learn more coding, etc

nobloat,

But why is up-to-date always good though?I get it if you actually need the new version but that’s rare though. There’s a reason that critical infrastructure relies on more stable, older and tested packages. In the industry and where the money actually is, older is generally seen as better and more mature. For example the whole drama of RedHat with Centos Stream happened because people don’t want to use upstream Centos Stream because it’s the testing ground for RHEL. I am at a stage where I prefer older packages. The new and shiny doesn’t mean it’s better.

nobloat,

What framework do you actually use ? Most programmers use Ubuntu or Debian and I don’t see how you need something so up to date and on the edge? Apart from some specific cases, most people do not need newer packages.
