unknowing8343,

I started to use it recently so I am not speaking for myself, but I have a friend who is a hardcore user that says that the key is that you must follow users who actually review content, and that it is specially interesting if these people have similar tastes to you. You can, for example, follow Martin Scorsese’s user and you’ll see his reviews.

what are you looking for in the upcoming year(s) for osm?

My biggest wish is that there’s an easy way to contribute images to wikimedia and to link them easily with osm. As soon as that’s possible, we’ll map the world much quicker and more reliable. Someone might take pictures of benches and another one will add the info if there’s a backrest from home.

unknowing8343,

I am looking forward for OvertureMaps and what will happen to OSM with that.

(solved) I can't get my linux system to run properly

I chose to use opensuse tw kde based on some vm tests. The installation was easy but for some reason the video playback on youtube is terrible. It stutters. First thing I did after install was to use opi to install codecs. Then I used Yast to get the Nvidia repo. Lastly, I used the software manager to install the video g06...

Once you use Florisboard you realise that even with all those options in AnySoftKeyboard, you cannot fully setup something as modern, well-functioning and organized as Florisboard.

There is one thing that makes me shut AnySoftKeyboard down everytime I come back and try it, which is that, when you hold down a key to show the alternative options… you have to really put your finger up over the options to select them… but only from the second row up. Makes no sense and no one seems to realise how wrong that is.

unknowing8343,

We all know Florisboard has no autocorrect or word suggestions yet. The whole post is about this exactly.

Why would I want to hide the smart bar if it’s actually useful, quick and modern, unline AnySoftKeyboard… which you have a set of options that either bring too little or too much.

No keyboard layout options in Florisboard? In fact, I can do something in Florisboard that I cannot do in AnySoftKeyboard in terms of layouts: I can pick a “spanish layout” for English language. Which is perfect because I hate having to change layouts and relearn key positions, something that AnySoftKeyboard forces you to do.

In terms of features that Florisboard has that AnySoftKeyboard doesn’t… how about a modern and useful top bar that does many more things than the static AnySoftKeyboard’s? How about left-right movement with spacebar? How about swipe deletion? How about good-looking password manager integration (and not AnySoftKeyboard’s aberration)? How about being able to separate layouts and languages? Clipboard support?

Many of the “cool” modular things that AnySoftKeyboard can do are:

  • for niche power users
  • things than can still be included eventually in Florisboard

The difference here is that for AnySoftKeyboard to include anything that Florisboard does right would require much more work, muuuch more work (basically a full rework of the app); whereas for Florisboard integrating a fancy layout would be… a simple, one file PR.

Never felt the need for microblogging when Reddit existed, and chats are a mess and I will never understand the appeal unless I spent 24 hours there. So now it’s Lemmy all the way… except for YouTube, of course, because that one is simply too hard to avoid, although I do mostly use Piped mirrors.

unknowing8343,

Although I totally get why lemmy.ml would want to do something like that, it’s not “being polite…”, it’s “enforcing politeness…”

unknowing8343,

I am a big big big Linux fan, but I feel that after 30 years, it is time for a non-monolithic kernel. I know Linus hates the idea of microkernels but the era of Rust is finally here and it shows that safe microkernels are fully possible now, and I believe the advantages and modularity can be amazing for a new era of open source computing.

unknowing8343,

New thunderbird app please be good… FairEmail is the best there is, but every few months we hit one of these critical points where the dev is about to shut everything down… and I am afraid the end is coming.

If you have an ereader with an eink screen… it’s a no-brainer. Digital books are soooo good.

  • virtually no weight
  • virtually no space
  • waaaaay cheaper
  • your local library has probably a way bigger and more accessible catalogue of ebooks than physical ones
  • tap and hold a word and get an automatic definition/translation
  • adjust text size or font
  • dark mode, if you into that (in some models)
  • Text-to-speech (in some models)
  • highlight text and write notes without f-ing up pages
  • literally translate entire phrases or look particular information from Wikipedia or similar with a simple gesture.
  • backup all of those and do crazy stuff like an automatic daily email to yourself with cool notes you took months/years ago.

Physical books nowadays are like vynil music… it’s for the artwork and having a physical “certificate” of something you love. Like… if I discover a book I really enjoy, I’ll probably buy a physical version so I can, you know, have it there on the shelf, like you have family pics or something.

unknowing8343,

I read somewhere that those deja vu and precognition dreams are actually mostly your mind having a glitch, believing this present moment is also past. No dream or past event exists, you just think it does because it feels like it. Weird stuff.

unknowing8343,

There are plenty of studies suggesting that people are actually brushing too much. Kinda like with shampoo… we strip our surfaces from healthy bacteria and oils and it creates a vicious cycle.

On the other side, many foods we eat today are not healthy for our mouth environment, so I still believe there has to be a certain degree of brushing, of course. So, simply put… you should adjust to your use case. Learn when you feel your mouth needs some brushing or not, and move on.

unknowing8343,

I just lost the game. And now you have.

unknowing8343,

There is a big jump from letting someone do some swipes on your Tinder profile with your permission to forcing an unwanted marriage for third party gains.

unknowing8343,

I was an Invidious user until I found out about Libretube, and the fact that on Libretube and even on a Piped website you can login to get your subs from other instances. That is crazy useful.

So I am full Piped for now.

unknowing8343,

I do have a nice home setup, and I know friends that also do… but we all still go to the cinema maybe like once a month. It’s just nice to share something with friends and strangers from time to time. Socialize, feel the vibe of the crowd, get surprised, create memories. Being out of home is cool.

unknowing8343,

If it gets 7 years of software updates it might be my next phone, although I hate the absurdly big size.

I’d buy an “iPhone Mini” Android right now if some company had the balls to do it.

unknowing8343,

Let’s go!

Can qbittorrent lie to me?

I connected my phone to my laptop and turned on USB tethering and removed all my sims from my phone, but it was still showing upload and download values and some torrents were downloading and uploading. How is this possible if I have 0 internet? I mean, my phone wasn’t connected to wifi and my laptop was still getting...

unknowing8343,

Torrent software usually shows average data transfer of the last X seconds. Actually, everything that measures data speed is doing that.

It might be that your config has a relatively long average. Nothing to worry about.

unknowing8343,

I actually use this a lot at work in remote meetings. Damn it!!!

unknowing8343,

I guess it makes it easier to do social engineering

unknowing8343,

I was a teenager, cannot remember any numbers but I do remember the sound of wind was very particular. It almost sounded like we could hear planes passing by.

unknowing8343,

For simple online consumption? Yes, definitely. PNG is even worse than JPEG for this.

PNG usefulness is for those cases where you really really really need lossless compression, which would mostly be professional printing, or really high quality stuff (wallpapers, etc).

unknowing8343,

You know, I don’t care about jokes not being funny and stuff like that. But what surprises me of USA late night shows is that, when they interview famous people… it CLEARLY shows it’s scripted. At least most of the time.

Every interview has usually this moment were casually (not at all, really) some little story comes up where the famous person tells something funny but human that happened to them (and probably made up), with a little twist that makes it clickbaity.

So weird and I usually turn it off right when the little story comes up, like… “agh, another fake interview, again”.

unknowing8343,

Not open source, but AnyDesk is another option that does exactly what you want.

There was a Flatpak, but the maintainer quit, so, you’ll probably have to install it directly from their official site.

Anyway, RustDesk, as mentioned by other comment, is essentially the open source alternative to AnyDesk, so maybe look into that first.

unknowing8343,

In Europe they are basically featureless, and the only people I have seen using them were those who struggle with consumerism.

unknowing8343,

I completely disagree with you.

If you gain sufficient amount of money (we are talking 100M $ here, but it works even for 1M), you have SO MUCH MONEY that it can generate money by itself within a reasonable timeframe AND you can live really really well with it, enjoy your hobbies and free time, all at the same time. And if you don’t know how to do it, let a professional help you, because you can pay for them, too.

unknowing8343,

I am so glad 1899 got cancelled. One of the worst shows I’ve seen in years.

And it’s one of the worst because it clearly had money to look great, and they decided to make the shittiest story, with the biggest plot-holes ever, and then finally finish it off like “yeah, nothing makes sense AND THAT’S THE POINT”… cheapest story ever.

unknowing8343,

Seriously, did we watch the same 1899??

From the third episode it was already making me think “oh, this is going to be one of those shows where literally everything is a mistery and nothing is ever explained”.

And then, nothing gets explained, and the season ends with the cheapest “GOTYA!!” ever. Like… what?? I’ve spent HOURS watching this and I literally wasted all this time… hmm… of course it was cancelled. It was expensive and didn’t really say anything meaningful.

“B-but because you need more seasons to understand”, this is not how the business works. We can not trust you will deliver if you failed to do anything meaningful in a whole season.

unknowing8343,

The crucial aspect of Dark was very straightforward. Time-travel. And everything happens organically from there.

In 1899, every episode adds a new thing that is completely unrelated to the previous, nothing is consistent, and it turns out nothing is really meaningful at all in the end.

I could start the show watching season 2 and I would be as clueless as anyone.

I'm looking for a FOSS Weather app for android

Hello! I’m looking for a foss weather app for android, so I went ahead to f-droid and tried a bunch of them, but didn’t find any that fully satisfies me: I want to be able to see the hourly forecast of any day of the week, not just the “global” forecast, and I want the weather service used not to require a credit card...

unknowing8343,

This one has been an absolute discovery. Amazing app well beyond the others I’ve tested up to now. Recommended.

unknowing8343,

Avoid Manjaro, if you plan on entering the ArchLinux space do it with EndeavourOS.

I would avoid Ubuntu, but that is more because I dislike their politics on snaps.

You are an entry-level IT pro, so, I’d suggest EndeavourOS for personal, Debian for work. Why? Simple, Debian is widely used in professional environments, nobody will look at you weird for using a “less professional” distro.

In terms of University work, you are saying you guys use Teams and Office, probably with a student license that would give you access to a full online Office experience through the browser, just use that.

In terms of gaming, things are looking pretty good nowadays, and with a more personal distro, such as EndeavourOS, you’ll get the latest advancements in gaming.

unknowing8343,

All of them. You can even connect between multiple computers.

unknowing8343,

After some research, all I’ve gathered is one report saying that you’ll absolutely destroy the Sonoff if you try to do that.

I reviewed the Aqara manual, and the possibility is specified there, so that makes it quite probable that it simply is a forbidden configuration for the Sonoff, or even any smart switch that does not specify that possibility.

So, unless someone magically shows me it’s possible, I am avoiding it for now, I’ll learn how to pass cables through the tubes and avoid any burning for now 😅

The reasoning behind the “it will NOT work” is that Sonoff uses S1 and S2 to create a low voltage circuit. It’s expecting low voltage, so it might break due to a voltage overload.

Here’s a reference.

unknowing8343,

Common tropes have existed forever. We can complicate stories a lot, but at the end of the day, all stories share stuff, specially the stuff that has worked for thousands of years.

unknowing8343,

An hour maybe to get some light sleep, and I can’t get to deep sleep until 5 AM easily.

I remember a few years ago that suddenly this topic came up with friends, and turns out almost everyone sleeps nicely after 1-5 minutes in bed.

And I thought my case was normal (it’s been like this since I was a kid). But I’ve been probably losing years of life without a way to gain them back. Depressing.

is anyone else bothered by the lack of the 3 buttons at the bottom

So i just bought Asus rog phone 6d and im extremely bothered by the lack of the back ,home and whatewer is the 3 one called buttons on the news androids. Is this something you all got used to with time or does this still bother you( IT really fells much less intuitive compared to the old 3 buttons ,alghtough preferably i would...

unknowing8343,

Definitely try gestures.

Being able to “go back” from a gentle swipe at any height is a blessing for the small hand. The rest of options are really, really intuitive.

Unless you have some mobility issues, you’ll never come back after a week.

unknowing8343,

Here’s the thing: use lemmyverse.net to find the right communities, enter them, and then locally search for your question. Profit.

There should be no central brand. That goes against the ethical guidelines of lemmy and federated social media. This is not about getting the most views and selling ads. This is about communities of people naturally coming together for the purpose of sharing information, not adiction.

unknowing8343,

Useless article. It’s a goddamn tool. If I take a million dollar car, I can still use it to kill people if I want to. This is just asking for standard information you can see in medical websites, and you want it banned?

Is it possible to burn fat without changing my weight?

I have been working a very labor intensive job for about 3 months now and have lost enough inches on my waist to go down two pants sizes yet my total weight when I go on the scale remains around the same. How is it possible that I lost 4 or 5 inches off my waist yet the scale doesn’t change? Is it possible what weight in fat I...

unknowing8343,

If he has not done much gym-like sport ever (which, if they are surprised by losing fat and keeping mass, it’s probably the case) they are probably on the “noob gains” phase, no need for high protein meals.

unknowing8343,

Ubuntu LTS (the most used in servers) is also outdated packages with security vulnerabilities, so…

The thing is that, Debian and Ubuntu, both apply security patches very fast with minimal implications, making these servers very reliable, stable and safe, unlike closed source alternatives.
