loki,

So this is an open-source server implementation of Windows RDP which I could install in Windows home builds and access it through RDP access client elsewhere?

I checked through their site and repo, binaries are built here. ci.freerdp.com/job/…/arch=win64,label=vs2017/

But i’m not sure where to start. which one should I download?

loki,

Thanks a lot for the thorough explanation. This is going to be real handy for users on Windows Home. I’m guessing once the server is installed, one can connect to it from any RDP client, without needing the wfreerdp client, right?

I use Remmina on my Linux Mint setup.

loki,

Only Taiwan and Nepal have granted same-sex couples equal rights currently.

makes it third?

Advertising privacy does fuck all when Apple has been allowing the government to read push notifications. Where does that promise fit in, while they knowingly supply what the government wants and then still market itself as a privacy friendly company?

loki,

If people aren’t savvy enough to bypass the TPM requirement, I don’t see them being savvy enough to install a whole new OS on their system.

loki, (edited )

If you use on android apps from the playstore, most apps are built to relay their notifications through Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM), so they don’t have to have a background notification listeners running 24/7. It also means less overhead from multiple notification listeners from every app having its own. So yes, if an app is built on top of google play services, it requires “google play services”

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firebase_Cloud_Messaging

If an app says it doesn’t rely on google play services, it uses an alternative notification listener or websockets, which might not be as effective, because Google is inbuilt and won’t kill its own apps, the scale of its infrastructure, and its habit of listening on people’s activity.

Add in Androids habit of killing background services, and you don’t always get your notification when the app isn’t in the foreground.

Even Signal from Playstore uses Google Play Services for notifications.

Varjo XR-4 Headset "Indistinguishable From Natural Sight" (www.uploadvr.com)

This seems to be Varjo’s response to the Apple Vision Pro. Its significantly cheaper than the last headset, the Varjo XR-3, going from $5,495 to $3990 and also removing the $1000 yearly subscription. Here’s a reminder that Apple initially developed much of their software for the Apple Vision Pro using Varjo’s XR-3’s and...

loki,

They kinda have to make some bold claims to stay relevant as Apple Vision might bankrupt them into oblivion when it releases.

loki,

Sounds plausible, but It would make a lot more people change, if it was a study and not just a “an immunologist explains”

loki, (edited )

maybe because Beeper devs were upfront about it and their bridges are opensource and self-hostable?

loki,

yes, they did, but the actual pruning starts from december.

loki,

Check lowendtalk offers for some deals on VPS for self hosting. However be sure to check the sellers standing in the community from past offers. You’ll also need to beware of resource limits as sellers will be trying to oversell like crazy and you might end up on some crowded nodes. So make sure you understand what youre getting yourself into.

loki,

If the only thing you do on instagram is chat. maybe try Beeper? It’s a matrix client with an instagram bridge. You still have to trust beeper but you can host your own matrix server and use their brigdes.

Instagram still gets your chat data but it won’t be scooping up anything else.

FlorisBoard | FOSS keyboard that respects your privacy (florisboard.org)

I came across everyday topic on Techlore Discussions about free and open source keyboards for Android and discovered this little gem. It is FlorisBoard, a virtual keyboard for Android which respects privacy of the user. I can sigh with relief and finish my search for that singular keyboard for typing stuff on the go....

loki,

There are a lot of “open source enthusiasts”, but not enough “open source contributors”

loki, (edited )

they’re going with numbers along with usernames, kinda like discord to reduce spam. I hope they work.

loki,

Protonmail for privacy, gmail for whatever else, and anonaddy for aliases for different websites.

Android 14 experience so far on a non-Google device.

Hi, I just upgraded my Xiaomi 11 Lite NE 5G to Android 14 via PixelOS (a custom ROM). Best things I like about it is that it’s way smoother and faster than Android 13 (PixelOS). I got to experience Pixel specific features as well. I liked AI wallpaper but it takes some time to generate even with 100 Mbps connection. Other than...

loki,

does PixelOS get the google photos unlimited upload feature as well? I think that’s pixel experience?

loki,

is it safe? won’t google ban users if they find out?

loki,

I still have my OG pixel XL that I turn on when I need to upload, but having to transfer to it every time is a little cumbersome. My daily driver is also a pixel phone but would be nice if it would just work on its own.

I’ll check out Pixel OS. thanks!

loki,

Begun the silicon wars have (again)

yaayy!!

loki,

Call it what you want, but for the consumers, this is a massive win

That’s what I meant. Competition is always good for the consumers. did you think I was being sarcastic? This is amazing development

loki,

the article is from 2018. is it still relevant?

loki,

Too many cuts in that video to trust it.

loki,

Enpass comes with it own keyboard you can switch to when you need to fill in some data. It’s completely local if you don’t sync to cloud. But the free tier is limited.

Try it and see

loki,

You’d need to get a GPU with drivers for ARM macOS.

I don’t really know much about this topic but didn’t asahi linux reverse engineer them already?

rosenzweig.io/…/first-conformant-m1-gpu-driver.ht…

loki,

I thought twas a fork of Linux Mint Cinnamon. 😆

Sandboxie might help? (For Windows)

github.com/sandboxie-plus/Sandboxie

Be careful, your understanding of incognito mode in Firefox may be wrong and that could be costing you

All the incognito browser windows share the same “session” in Firefox. So say you open an Incognito window to browse Facebook or something, then you open another Incognito window, this new incognito window is linked to the previous incognito window, meaning you are logged into Facebook at that new Incognito window as well....

loki,

This isn’t well known?

loki,

The rest of ARM is behind

That might change with Snapdragon X. It isn’t out yet but competition to the top will hopefully start getting the prices down.

loki,

I still use sesame. Tasker is set as assistant app and it will launch sesame when assistant is triggered. It has served me well, but integrations are breaking so will have to see how long it will last. I also have Nova Prime but switched after the buyout.

Sesame was also bought out by the same company, so Nova and Sesame developers are working together with Branch.

loki,

Sesame basically stopped updating their app even before they got acquired, so they hadn’t added any analytics or trackers. There were some updates after but they were just bug fixes. Exodus tells me there are no known trackers, I also haven’t seen any suspicious traffic from it yet so I still use them.

Nova, however will be integrated with Branch and will likely phoning home.

loki,

assuming the CPU support list is decided by TPM 2.0 availability

This was me before I checked the compatibility app. Windows never bothered me with Windows11 update so I thought It didn’t have TPM2.0+. I got curious and used the compatibility checker.

The laptop had TPM 2.1, but CPU is not compatible. oh well…

loki,

That’s HUGE if true. The pricing will also be an interesting factor.

loki,

That’s good. I don’t believe in god.

loki,

Yes, same as guilt tripping users by calling up on their religion. I’m not going to use it, I haven’t even seen a screenshot of it. It was a sarcastic comment. I’m fine with newpipe FOSS project.

loki,

There’s also headscale if you want to selfhost

github.com/juanfont/headscale

loki,

Mass production does that.

loki,

These people existed before lemmy, reddit or digg. just annoying to be around.

loki, (edited )

Artists want their art to be seen by as many people as possible. Their livelihood probably depends on it.

loki, (edited )

Amazon only operates in 58 countries, so it’s basically useless for everyone else. But the company they acquired (fakespot) seems to do more than amazon, but that still does not make it worth packaging it with the browser

loki, (edited )

it’s unlikely they are going to be able to bruteforce your 2FA codes in the duration of the class, so just change them back once you’re done with the class?

or record the video showing the whole process. change the code, show the video you recorded before the change

loki, (edited )

How exactly? Beeper is a matrix chat with bridges to multiple mesaaging apps, I don’t see any functionality beyond messaging.

loki,

Afaik KMPlayer on Android uses libVLC, so it’s still just a wrapper of VLCs player library.

loki,

I mean it’s a free forum, you can make one if you want to.

loki,

Below, I’ve embedded some graphics created by display analyst Dylan Raga that illustrate how Ultra HDR works. Using version 9.1.098 of the Google Camera app extracted from a Pixel 8, I took various Ultra HDR photos in a nearby park. These photos were captured on a Pixel 6 Pro, which surprisingly supports saving photos in Ultra HDR just by sideloading the latest version of Google Camera.

So maybe. or maybe just pro devices. not sure

loki,

Or they just want to keep the attention to Pixel product, any pixel. These little leaks doing rounds and rounds in tech sites mean more exposure to Pixels.

loki, (edited )

It’s not that deep.

  • Kid wants a video game thats paid
  • Kid searches the game piracy website and finds it.
  • Kid downloads and plays the pirated game

Every kid does this and you know it. People don’t consider downloading things off of internet as some sort of a moral test or a criminal action. And software piracy is just in paper in some countries.

loki, (edited )

how many websites have you seen use it based on its meaning of marxist leninist versus how many have used tv for television?

lemmy and lemmygrad, can you name others?

I hate them for ccp/russia propaganda but this is straight up mental bubble made up by some edgelord with no rational argument.

Just because you want it to be so, doesn’t make it.
