Euphoma,

ubports has been completely community maintained and separate from Canonical for longer than it was actually under Canonical.

Euphoma,

I’m not them so idk. Also I think Canonical uses a slightly different ubuntu logo these days.

Euphoma,

I got PCVR working on Manjaro (my main installation is NixOS and I installed Manjaro to see if VR would work) on my Valve Index, but for some reason audio sounded like it was bass boosted a ton and games ran at 30 fps. IMO PCVR on Linux just isn’t there yet. The steam vr dashboard didn’t work at all either, might’ve been because of the new Steam VR 2.0 not prioritizing Linux use at all.

Not sure what the experience is like on quest, but I would think its not too far off from my Valve Index experience.

Euphoma,

I think performance may vary depending on your setup. My experience is definitely not universal, but I’ve never experienced VR that works well on Linux yet. IMO you should keep trying and see if you can get it working, but if not Valve could fix VR on Linux when they finish the rumored Deckard headset.

Euphoma,

I think this might be changing in the U.S., because my friend group only talks on Discord. I don’t even have their phone numbers.

Euphoma,

If they were able to guess your pin, you should probably switch to a longer pin or a password. It seems insane at first to type a long password, but if you pick two long scientific words, its secure with only letters.

Euphoma,

Aggie.io is pretty good, it supports pressure sensitivity and layers. It also has online collaboration.

Euphoma,

I think magma is something else, the tos on aggie.io doesn’t mention anything about copyright.

Euphoma,

Just stumbled upon this comment. Actually, Windows has been using anime mascots for years in asia. Notably, they haven’t made a new one for Windows 11.

Euphoma,

When I used wsl, it felt fine. There were some problems with running more GPU intensive tasks, but being able to use linux-only software while I was restricted to Windows was pretty good.

Euphoma,

What are you trying to do on WSL? I think the whole point of WSL originally was to have a linux terminal on Windows, before they added graphics in WSL 2.

Euphoma, (edited )

You can add something like this to your config: stackoverflow.com/…/how-to-add-nixos-unstable-cha…

You just need to have it fetch the tarball for nixos 23.11 instead of nixos unstable.

Euphoma,

There’s an installer that makes a basic config for you where you can choose KDE as your DE.

Laptop not working after installing nimdow

I have installed nimdow window manager. I have auto-login enabled. Nimdow is the default option. The only options I have at boot are (from the bootloader): default, timeout, edit, resolution, print and help (help is not working). How am I supposed to go back to GNOME or disable auto-login? I tried accessing the recovery shell,...

Euphoma,

You are probably gonna want to chroot into your laptop using a livecd for linux. This will allow you to basically access your terminal without being able to login or boot, and then you can uninstall Nimdow, or turn off auto-login.

Some guides to chrooting.

Euphoma,

Yeah. I just thought that the OP was unable to boot or something like that.

Euphoma,

Chromebooks are honestly the best option for budget linux laptops, you can easily install linux onto many chromebooks.

Varjo XR-4 Headset "Indistinguishable From Natural Sight" (www.uploadvr.com)

This seems to be Varjo’s response to the Apple Vision Pro. Its significantly cheaper than the last headset, the Varjo XR-3, going from $5,495 to $3990 and also removing the $1000 yearly subscription. Here’s a reminder that Apple initially developed much of their software for the Apple Vision Pro using Varjo’s XR-3’s and...

Euphoma,

If it removes the tracking from the link before the page loads, it could work. So it would already be clean when you copy it.

Euphoma,

It’s not fully supported: old.reddit.com/r/…/vr_on_linux_makes_me_sad/

No async reprojection

No bluetooth support for base stations power management

Does not work on Wayland, at all (Nobara, KDE)

Lacks the ability for you to continue using your headset if for some reason it disconnects and reconnects (base stations will not be detected, neither will any bluetooth adapters like the SW7)

A plethora of bugs

It feels like my headset view is on a delay? Maybe due to no async reprojection

I’m quoting this guy because I think that VR straight up doesn’t work on NixOS, and I haven’t gotten to testing my Index on any other os yet.

xeiaso.net/blog/nixos-vr-hell-2021-12-02/ <- It seems this guy wasn’t able to get VR working on NixOS either.

Euphoma,

TempleOS (wikipedia) is a meme os. It’s supposed to be god’s os and was singlehandedly coded by the late Terry Davis. So this post isn’t really marketing, and the reference is just supposed to be humorous.

Euphoma,

If you use the default cinnamon desktop on linux mint, theres an extension for it called gTile.

github.com/shuairan/gTile

Not sure if it does what you want.

TBH I’ve always found the popup showing all the other windows when tiling in Windows to be annoying so I’ve never looked for it on Linux.

Euphoma,

If you don’t have much experience with linux you should not use nixos. I don’t think nixos is any different from debian or fedora in privacy, anonymity, or security. Many people even reduce their privacy by putting their config on github.

Euphoma,

Other people will know what bootloader you use, what apps you use, etc. Yeah I guess its not a huge concern, but its something.

Euphoma,

Sudo is root. It executes commands as the root user on every linux distro.

Euphoma, (edited )

I only use an extension for tray icons. I use it kind of like how I would use a tiling window manager with a keyboard based workflow and non tiling windows. I just hit the super key and type app names to launch stuff and drag windows around with the super key. Instead of alt-tabbing I hit the super key to see the overview and click on the window I want.

In the newest gnome versions, there’s a menu that shows you what apps are in the background, so if you know what apps are already open. I’m not a huge fan of that but I wouldn’t really care if my tray icons didn’t work because its close enough.

Euphoma,

I got 1 dollar a year on my domain, gen.xyz has some real cheap domains if you don’t care about it being a string of 6-9 numbers.

Euphoma,

Use soulseek instead. Nicotine+ is a pretty good soulseek client.

Euphoma,

You can also drag it to the tab bar to add it as a new tab.

Euphoma,

I keep seeing ads in my notifications on my windows installation for windows store items or bing.

Euphoma,

No, I only boot into windows when I game, so its been a couple days since I’ve gotten one of the notifications.

Euphoma,

How is it enshittification to stop people from pirating your stuff?

Euphoma, (edited )

I wouldn’t really consider improving their website coding so that people can’t pirate it enshittification.

Enshittification is based around a platform first creating something good for users and then making it good for suppliers and then when they are locked in, reduce quality. You aren’t locked into a news website that you aren’t even paying for, and you aren’t entitled to their products either.

Euphoma,

Yeah, I haven’t seen a paywall in years with javascript disabled by default.

Euphoma,

How is specifically blocking 12ft enshittification then.

Euphoma,

There’s syntax highlighting by default in vim though.

Euphoma,

Maybe check your display settings? My tablet worked out of the box and is treated as a monitor. On x11 it shows up in xrandr.

Euphoma,

Just accept that its not private, use the website (not the app), and don’t upload anything that you aren’t comfortable with being public.

You can also sign up with a burner phone number.

Euphoma,

If vpns are blocked on the network you are on, tor usually has a way to work.

Euphoma, (edited )

Denuvo these days is ridiculously hard to crack, the only people good enough usually would rather get a job at Denuvo because its so hard you have to be insane to do it for free. There was also some guy doing denuvo cracks for only football manager games but they retired like 3 months ago.

Euphoma,

I feel its the reverse, most people I know on discord mute most of the discord servers they are in. I put most of the discord servers I’m in into folders so that its easier to find the people I actually talk to and ignore all of the ones I joined for asking questions or downloading files.

Euphoma,

I’ve never seen that before, but I have discord rich presence turned off.

Euphoma,

The new demo for what? I have no idea what you are talking about. I’d like to think I know a bit about metaverses as a VR enthusiast.

Euphoma,

Do you mean the winrar exploit? I don’t know of or can find any other exploit related to rar files. If this is what you mean, it only affects winrar which is only on windows and most people use 7zip anyways.

Euphoma,

p2p traffic for torrenting isn’t enabled on proton vpn free version. So using it would not protect your torrenting.

Euphoma, (edited )

The only odd thing I noticed is the test tubes that look like they should be out of focus like the rest of the background. That is extremely convincing and idk if I would notice if I saw it out of context.

Euphoma,

I got the cartoon with text wrong because I didn’t know dalle-3 could do text. I got 12 from vibes of more detail? This assumption that AI does more detail gets a lot of actual humans. AI image generation is really crazy. The simpler stuff is pretty much indistinguishable from real human stuff at this point.

Euphoma,

90% of people who use computers just need the web browser and some sort of office suite and whatever proprietary software their job tells them to use.

I don’t think they would find much if any use to command line tools.

Euphoma,

Some adobe products are way ahead of the competition (patenting useful stuff) and they integrate nicely with each other. I don’t use them out of principle but that’s why people use them.
