hoshikarakitaridia,

I hope unity’s shareholders are happy with what they hoped for. This is the result of driving a company too far. Let’s makes this a guideline to follow for other companies not to make such shady decisions.

It becomes more appearent with every new instance of protest that there’s something equally valuable for a company as money, and that is community trust. Because losing it can stop growth. I love the new layer of accountability we obtained with the internet.

hoshikarakitaridia,

No, it will come for all developers.

Now there’s some ambiguity about it, and maybe you could file a lawsuit, but it’s not that much, and otherwise this contract WILL be enforced for everyone.

Either way, switching to Godot or to Unreal sounds like a good move rn. Would have switched to Unreal anyway, fair superior engine for bigger games imo.

Oh also this gives the new lumberyard engine more market share as well (Amazon) which will be interesting.

What thrilling times we live in.

Sidenote, I have a feeling that’s straight up illegal under contract law. IANAL though.

Edit: Just so ppl have something specific: you bought access to the service. It’s probably gonna be limited in the User Agreement as “if this service has to be shut down, you agree to lose your access and you don’t sue to get your money back”. But this is a backend migration and I’m fairly sure this is not something they had in their original contracts. That’s why sniff a broken contract and when they don’t refund your money, I sniff broken laws.

Well what an interesting question.

Let’s look at the definitions in Wikipedia:

Sentience is the ability to experience feelings and sensations.

Experience refers to conscious events in general […].

Feelings are subjective self-contained phenomenal experiences.

Alright, let’s do a thought experiment under the assumptions that:

  • experience refers to the ability to retain information and apply it in some regard
  • phenomenal experiences can be described by a combination of sensoric data in some fashion
  • performance is not relevant, as for the theoretical possibility, we only need to assume that with infinite time and infinite resources the simulation of sentience through AI needs to be possible

AI works by telling it what information goes in and what goes out, and it therefore infers the same for new patterns of information and it adjusts to “how wrong it was” to approximate the correction. Every feeling in our body is either chemical or physical, so it can be measured / simulated through data input for simplicity sake.

Let’s also say for our experiment that the appropriate output it is to describe the feeling.

Now I think, knowing this, and knowing how good different AIs can already comment on, summarize or do any other transformative task on bigger texts that exposes them to interpretation of data, that it should be able to “express” what it feels. Let’s also conclude that based on the fact that everything needed to simulate feeling or sensation it can be described using different inputs of data points.

This brings me to the logical second conclusion that there’s nothing scientifically speaking of sentience that we wouldn’t be able to simulate already (in light of our assumptions).

Bonus: while my little experiment is only designed for theoretical possibility and we’d need some proper statistical calculations to know if this is practical in a realistic timeframe already and with a limited amount of resources, there’s nothing saying it can’t. I guess we have to wait for someone to try it to be sure.

hoshikarakitaridia,

And that is the point.

It sounds stupidly simple, but AIs in itself was the idea to do the learning and solving problems more like a human would. By learning how to solve similar problems, and transfer the knowledge to a new problem.

Technically there’s an argument that our brain is nothing more than an AI with some special features (chemicals for feelings, reflexes, etc). But it’s good to remind ourselves we are nothing inherently special. Although all of us are free to feel special of course.

hoshikarakitaridia,

This sets a dangerous precedent that journalistic pieces could be deemed reputable harm and therefore in any case illegal. Just imagine someone wrote an article about Hitler in his youth calling him out for racist behaviour and they would get a verdict against the journalist, notwithstanding the fact that there’s merit in the criticism.

Of course there is a difference when it comes to unwarranted slander without any evidentiary basis. That’s something more akin to Depp v Heard.

I don’t like this at all.

hoshikarakitaridia,

You might wanna watch his videos to get a feel for him. He’s a bit chaotic, very controversial in the way he conducts himself, but there is a bottom line. And usually when he goes after people, there’s at least a few pieces of evidence of actual criminal conduct.

Point being, he’s getting a lot more hate than other commentary channels for how he does things, but there’s a good argument for the value of his commentary, evident by what happened in his fight against the gambling industry for ignoring extensive money laundering using their machines in their casinos.

hoshikarakitaridia,

In your definition probably just being mean. Every ill claim was part of a joke in the form of sarcasm or exaggeration and every claim he presented neutrally was presented on the basis of researched facts. I really don’t think there’s any basis there iirc.

hoshikarakitaridia,

I think he said that was probably criminal affiliates of the casinos he exposed for money laundering.

Not saying Barilaro is not corrupt ofc, his videos are controversial but his claims are based in factual research.

Elon Musk seen as working counter to U.S. interests in dealings with Russia, China (youtu.be)

Elon Musk's financial interests put him in a position of having his own personal foreign policy, but new reporting shows that whether it's manufacturing in China or the Starlink network being used in Ukraine, Musk’s decisions can run counter to stated US policy.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Can someone double check the content of the quote? I’d need documents to believe this because that’s a big claim.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Wow what a stupid title. It’s straight up a lie.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Mhm I have a feeling they got a point

hoshikarakitaridia,

Maybe this is my chance to bring a nuanced answer to this.

First of all, these are all speculations, because you can never diminish a person down to what content they consume.

That said, let’s have a look at Joe Rogan: he is a podcaster who started out with a solid baseline viewership and with a positive perception. His views were very moderate. Because of a lot of circumstances he became very popular fairly quickly (one of them is probably that people found his laugh funny). He then changed his topics a bit, got more prestigious guests on the show and also changed his views from what he let shine through in the podcast. He got very much more libertarian / conservative and his topics got a bit more bizarre sometimes. Nowadays a lot of people don’t identify with him anymore and he has had some very controversial situations and takes.

So if someone watches such a person there’s different reasons: maybe they do it for entertainment and don’t take it seriously, maybe they take it very seriously and agree with him a lot. Either way, It’s like watching trash TV: it’s not inherently wrong, but it looks kind of weird to support it, if even just by watching.

Ok this is my little summary. Hope it helps. Also everything else old correct me if I got things wrong.

Starfield Is Seemingly Missing Entire Stars (the local 'sun') When Running On AMD Radeon GPUs (wccftech.com)

So a user on Reddit (ed: u/Yoraxx ) posted on the Starfield subreddit that there was a problem in Starfield when running the game on an AMD Radeon GPU. The issue is very simple, the game just won't render a star in any solar system when you are at the dayside of a moon or even any planetary object. The issue only occurs on AMD...

hoshikarakitaridia,

If it’s down to very specific Chipsets, that sounds like an unforseeable bug.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Correction: someone pointed out they are literally interfacing the graphics drivers the wrong way, so it’s still on the their Devs.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Kind of. Iirc it’s a very controversial practice and whenever the police pulls it out in a public case it gets protested again (for good reason). Also, even if the practice is legal right now, there’s a lot of limitations to it. Obviously it’s nudging the ethical boundaries of police work either way.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Yeah and also, in capitalism, if a company ceases to grow, there’s a good chance it will vaporize soon after. It’s not a causation, but it’s a notable correlation.

hoshikarakitaridia,

propublica.org/…/cigna-pxdx-medical-health-insura…

Considering this article talks about automed denial without a case review by doctors, most definitely.

hoshikarakitaridia,

How to be less racist/bigotred?

So I am a part of the LGBTQ community and work in a big city in middle europe. A lot of my coworkers are religios and have a foreign background. They are mostly very nationalist and homo-/transphobic. I hate them for their blind hate and bigotry, which wont change. I have realised, that I have become a bit bigotred towards...

hoshikarakitaridia,

a lot of my coworkers are religious and have a foreign background

I think this where the bias settles in that he wants to remove.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Longing. It’s fascinating to me how crushing that feeling can be, even though it’s not negative or even heavy in itself.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Klingt legal ziemlich schwierig ehrlich gesagt.

hoshikarakitaridia,

If you got some repressed emotions this is not the place.

And for the people in the back: we don’t. Lol.

hoshikarakitaridia,

As people pointed out in another thread, nuclear energy is NOT the future and also a really bad short term solution,so countries like Germany are going back to coal short term to make the transitions to renewables in the meantime.

It’s not a great solution, but without Nordstream, there’s really not much else more sensible to do right now, just to make the transition.

hoshikarakitaridia,

I might also add there’s smart algorithms being developed for about 5y+ now that distribute power surplus and deficiency over a grid. This will probably be key. Just take a look at “energy metering”.

hoshikarakitaridia,

I really don’t see that as a good progression. We want to focus on renewables because that’s the most sustainable way to go. Why go back to nuclear again?

That said if you are saying that’s where the industry is moving even though that’s probably not the best approach, fair enough. My opinion has zero effect on the industry.

hoshikarakitaridia,

That’s funny.

I use it for all of those, but also if someone uses or words I don’t understand or if they bite their tongue or anything similar. I successfully managed to confuse a lot of people doing that and it brings me great joy.

What's a skill that's taken for granted where you live, but is often missing in people moving there from abroad?

I was thinking about that when I was dropping my 6 year old off at some hobbies earlier - it’s pretty much expected to have learned how to ride a bicycle before starting school, and it massively expands the area you can go to by yourself. When she went to school by bicycle she can easily make a detour via a shop to spend some...

hoshikarakitaridia,

Maintaining a swimming pool is an expense that many schools, especially in poorer districts can’t afford.

German here: the solution for most of the schools I went to and heard of (elementary) was to get a bus to drive to the next public swimming pool and they’d let us use it for a few hours. The government is funding that. And that solution worked for most of them, although I only managed to get do my swim test after swimming classes in school because I was anxious about it.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Imagine they decide to add a DLC called “the dragon expansion” just for this guy.

Actually hilarious.

hoshikarakitaridia,

One-China my ass, if West Taiwan wants to stay independent they should stop fiddling with the sovereignty of other countries.

hoshikarakitaridia,

So what about nuclear waste? I am opposed to nuclear energy because of all the reasons you pointed out, but also because we collectively decided to dump the waste somewhere underground where they will go on radiating for a few eternities more. Do you know if this bullshit or if that’s a true concern?

hoshikarakitaridia,

I know this is odd but thank you for this discussion, I’m learning a lot of things from knowledgeable people here and not just propaganda or parrots.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Still mad that Payday 3 gets denuvo. What a colossal waste. This makes me hesitate to buy it.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Well I even subscribed to it at some point. But they really dumbed down the v4 model, so it’s basically on par with the V3 model. And since open source models have become good, there’s no point in using ChatGPT anymore.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Especially Facebook’s Llama2 and any checkpoints of that model are solid.

And if you are a coder, I think there was one called “Starchart” just aimed at code autocomplete, which seems to be a good start.

But ofc as alehc already mentioned, these all exist on Hugging Face and you will find a treasure trove of AI models on there regarding every possible implementation.

hoshikarakitaridia,

German here: get ready for empty promises. German politics will make you just as jaded.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Ich schätze Mal damit ist Berlin / Schönhauser Allee gemeint?

hoshikarakitaridia,

This.

They might have had an argument that this is sanctionable discovery, but his client broke the rules so many times that the court begged the prosecution to ask for punishments against sbf and he finally got his bond revoked.

This filing does not exist in a vacuum and this is the definition of fuck around and find out.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Yeah true. Why do the talking when you can do the walking.

This actually gives me more concerns than before, which is probably not what they intended.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Everyone is like “well no shit” but I honestly didn’t know. I don’t play the game. It’s good to hear about, especially for parents.

hoshikarakitaridia,

Yes that was it. Chinas comments have been over the top for a bunch of issues in the past, there’s no reason to just presume their stance has merit.

Especially since they are starting fires again rn regarding Taiwan and Japan in different context.
