I drove down into southern Alberta to Waterton this fall. I was pleasantly shocked to see so many wind turbines in AB.
I was not surprised and disappointed to hear they have “paused” future development /support for these initiatives. It’s also disturbing the amount of abandoned wells and tailing ponds the AB taxpayers are on the hook for. It seems to be Private Capitalism for the profits, and Public Welfare for the clean up and many Albertans seem more than fine with this.
We saw this grow during the duration of WW1. This first Xmas (when everyone thought it would be over by then). English and German troops met in no man’s land with an informal truce to bury their dead, exchange greetings, and play a little football.
Once the generals heard of this they banned all events like this from ever happening again. It’s hard to fight against someone you find are much like you. The Nazis in the second War were masters of dehumanizing not only the Jews but the Russians too. They didn’t treat the English and the Americans the same way for the most part.
Eventually when one has been at war long enough most of our humanity is lost. How else does one cope with such horror and depravity that comes with war?
Locally especially among the rednecks, the answer is always those immigrants.
My first 2 thoughts are yeah right they came and stole your software engineering job, and what job? That back breaking one you weren’t going to work in the fields anyways as crops rot away? I can’t see you doing either. /s
A subsidy-fueled boom helped build China into an electric-car giant but left weed-infested lots across the nation brimming with unwanted battery-powered vehicles.
Sometimes I will use something and realize I’ve owned it forever. It’s a nice change in our throwaway reality. I think my personal record is a bicycle multi-tool I got for one of my first bikes, ~25 years ago. Still have it, still use it. When it comes to electronic devices I have a Panasonic mini Hi-Fi from ~2005. Never...
I was lucky to find another doctor after my family GP of decades retired at 85. He wasn’t allowed to keep practicing after 85. He moved to an advisory role in another clinic giving up his practice. He wasn’t able to find someone to buy his single practitioner clinic. The real estate costs and the many services where patients are passed around is the new model listed as reasons he couldn’t sell it. I suspect since everything was still in paper records didn’t help.
The new GP is one of many doctors in the same clinic. He does mostly phone calls with some in person visits but usually it’s phones calls first and it’s 7 - 20 days before one can get an appointment. Anything urgent will need to be a drop in clinic which are full most of the time, or the ER worse case.
I have to wonder how much minor time sensitive cases are burdening the system overall. I ended up at a drop in clinic as the last appointment this summer due to an issue with bandages after a surgery. If this had failed it was the ER next for me as there was no way the GP could fit me within a week unlike the old days with my GP. Thankfully a adjustment to my bandages and cream solved my infection but it was still minor.
I don’t think there’s a easy fix coming soon anytime…
I’ve noticed YouTube specifically has become more addictive, I never used to be one to sit and scroll for long durations before but I often catch myself spending way too long on shorts now...
It seems to also be a switching task issue in our minds. These changes of states takes more effort than playing the next video does or just keeping on what we are doing. It’s so much easier for us to keep playing the digital dopamine slot machine that, TikTok, instagram reels, Facebook and YouTube short videos provide.
From a business sense they want to keep your attention, from a biology sense we are safe and don’t see a need to move with the random rewards another quick video offers.
It’s amazing how well they have refined getting and keeping our attention. We also get rewarded with dopamine from the anticipation of the next story or short video. It gets we don’t even really need the next video, just the anticipation is enough to reward us with more dopamine.
I’ve read doing a simple reverse mental countdown of 5-4-3-2-1 blast off helps us switch gears from another part of the brain. It can also help us get out of bed or off the couch.
I have an Asian buddy that rages over how bad Asian drivers are and even gives them the fingers pulling his eyes even more closed move while passing them. I don’t go anywhere in a car with him anymore… Come to think of it I rarely see him now…
I know a lady that has wired everything due to health concerns from wifi. She says she only accesses the internet via wires on her iPhone and iPad. I didn’t realize that was even an option.
I was always envious of my gay buddies and their ability to just get it on and not deal with the traditional female vetting process even for hook ups.
There were some good parody videos on the differences between early Tinder and Grinder dates highlighting them.
Then I noticed most have the common story that there is no one decent to date locally despite all their good friends being gay.
The only good ones are out of town or far away across the country. Not sure where it is now but I’m still envious if no matter how hard they try to get pregnant, there isn’t the risk of 20 to life from being truly successful…
That’s a great point. Often straight guys have lower standards and I was looking at it from that viewpoint. Women often complain most men see all of them as a potential sexual partner and I’m not sure if they are wrong in a lot of cases.
Still I wonder really there is no one in the whole city, province, or country that is a match? The smaller pool is something I should factor in though if I’m being fair.
In addition most of my relationships have been with people not originally from the area but neither am I.
I’m close to doing the same. Mostly because of how poorly they handled Google Play Credit cards being hung up in their automated system and basically stiffing me for them. They can’t be returned to the store despite Google insisting they can be. I gave up after 13 attempts…
Being more than a Google Drive and YouTube customer I have other Google services I’m not sure it’s worth the effort anymore. This is after years of paying monthly fees all because I can’t find a human at google to resolve a google play gift card issue on their end. I hope California takes them to the cleaners in the class action over the millions in Google Play they are holding.
It’s free money for them as there is no way for many users to redeem or refund these cards bought in grocery stores, online, and/or big box stores. This is the part where I think they have slided into the evil part the early version of them were concerned about.
I seem to get the version on how wasted they got and sick they were afterwards. It’s like they unlock new achievement badges each weekend by how much they throw up the next day.
I’m left thinking you’re getting into your late 30s or 40s now. This isn’t your teens and early 20s anymore.
I’ve enjoyed when seeing some of these hard partiers mature and nope out now after a few years. But honestly being a alcoholic seems to the baseline starting place for many when it comes to socializing.
I know I’m a drag for them when I’m at a nice hotel and I’m not joining in with a cooler bag full of beers or hard stuff to get the party started before going to dinner. The gf is younger and a little frustrated I’m just not interested in that anymore or was I ever really.
She’s coming to terms with her inability to not be sick after a night of drinking as she gets older now too. Being health conscious she’s coming to the realization that alcohol consumption is perhaps not the best thing for her long term either based on the health of her long term friends still trying to keep up with being wasted every weekend.
The gf’s father is like this. Every visit is a story of some famous or rich person/people he spent the day with as a buddy not an employee of, or the more common one of his outage and how he one upped someone or put a group of people in their place, at least in his story.
Then he wonders why his son doesn’t want to deal with him, while I see his adult son being a outrage clone of him in a way with stories of injustices against him. His rage is simmering as he tells the stories about every employer, coworker, supervisor, or government agency that is wrong or out to get him. Lately it’s been how the school teachers are plain wrong when it comes to how much of a pain his son is becoming and how his lectures of these elementary teachers is going.
In relation miss my late father’s stories of how much the little town I grew up had changed since my last visit which was often the same stories or my other family members do nothing stories that never change either. The energy level of that is pretty low looking back now…
It’s funny no matter which side we are coming from we rarely get checked on our views in our social media curated echo chambers.
In the old days we would have been pulled more to the center due to most people in real life being a little left or right of it.
I still think many really are but that doesn’t sell ads or moves people to vote like what about them outrage or think of the children boogie men do. It’s a shame how polarized we’ve become.
I have Mint on all my older Lenovo T and X series laptops. They run like champs except for the audio. It’s never loud enough. It’s fine though with a Bluetooth headset or external speaker. I wonder how yours are with extremal keyboard and mouse? Mine is ok but my Logitech Keys lights keep cycling through the lights
I watched a instagram video recently where the guy was up at 2am and decided it was a good time make brownies. I’m like dude these days at that time it’s usually a my first restroom break as I’ve been asleep since 10pm. It’s not time to whip up gramma’s brownie recipe from scratch…
