My mom’s favorite line growing up was, “and that’s why you don’t do that.”

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Remember, if you see someone stealing food, no you fuckin’ didn’t.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Food banks. Look at your local church, synagogue, or mosque. A lot of them do community outreach and have some kind of food bank.

If you’re skipping meals or you have $5 'til next Friday, the food bank is for you. Don’t feel like you’re taking something away from someone “more needy.” It’s you. You’re needy. Take the help. That was a hard lesson to learn in my 20s.

The trope is your typical suburban, middle class white family are soft parents who let their kids get away with murder. You’ve seen the type - parents whose kids are on an absolute rampage and their response is to squat down and say, “Now Kayydenn, we don’t do that here.” The implication being that if the non-white kid did that their parents would beat the hell outta them.

NB: I’m whiter than Wonder bread and 35 and I still wouldn’t dare call my mother by her first name.

Oh yeah. I firmly believe every single American should be forced to work either retail or food service for 1 year. Maybe it’ll teach them some goddamn empathy.

My worst was working for Best Buy. One Christmas someone’s hellspawn decided that if he didn’t get a new PlayStation he was going to knock over the DVDs. All of them. It was like a cartoon; he just sprinted down the aisle with his arm out cackling like a tiny Joker.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

I had a roommate that loved pour over coffee in the morning. That in itself isn’t the issue; she taught me how to use her V60 and it actually makes pretty good coffee.

No, the issue was she ground her beans fresh. Every morning, at 6AM. Know what the loudest sound in the universe is? An electric coffee grinder at 6AM.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah but swallowing it will last longer and won’t hurt like a motherfucker.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Nope. I worked retail for years at the same yellow-and-blue themed electronics store and they’re spot-on. The absolute worst are the ones carrying tacky designer bags. Think the giant LV logo ones. They were almost universally nightmares to deal with that had $1000 deposit requirements for cell phones.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

I dealt with quite a range of incomes. I pull their credit reports to qualify them for service. I knew exactly what their financials looked like.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Same. I’m an engineer with a very small tech company; even though we’re not FAANG, we sure act like it. I have stuff from so many hobbies just sitting collecting dust in a closet or a drawer because when I get done with work I only have enough energy to feed myself, look after the dog, and do the bare minimum to keep life going until tomorrow, then rinse and repeat.

I think the only thing that’s saved me from total burnout is that my boss is a hardliner on WFH; we maintain a small office space for conferences and meetings, but we’ve been told in no uncertain terms there will be no return to office. That at least lets me take care of small chores like laundry and dishes and runs to the grocery store during the day.

Bonus points if said Bluetooth speaker has obnoxious rainbow LEDs in the grille.

You’re right and you should say it louder.

I just wish Windows would do like Chrome OS does and give you a little detent when you move a window to the edge of the screen.

In my experience ingestion route doesn’t make a difference; smoked or eaten, marijuana definitely makes my heart beat significantly faster and more irregularly and spikes my blood pressure.

I stopped smoking after I got the 'rona, because it totally ratfucked my lung capacity, but I saw the same physiological effects either way (minus smoking-specific ones like coughing and lightheadedness).

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Those both sound like they’d be on the menu at Bobert’s restaurant. With a side of E Cole Slaw.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Well don’t get all amped up about it; you’ve gotta stay grounded.

Dozens of health organizations pledge ‘full support’ for federal ban on menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars (www.cnn.com)

Eighty national public health groups, including the American Heart Association, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Preventative Medicine, placed a full-page ad in Sunday’s edition of the Washington Post in support of a federal ban on menthol in cigarettes and all...

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know about “real” cigars, but they make the ones people roll blunts with in a bunch of different flavors like vanilla and grape.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

$6 that a pack of menthol cigarettes

Not sure where you are, but a pack is almost $25 here.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

New York. For better or worse, they’re essentially trying to tax people out of smoking.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Totally agree! I guess “regular” cigar would have been better? I smoke both cigars and blunts and have no issue with either, I just don’t know what they call the wrap ones.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been encountering fewer and fewer of those that still work lately. Most IVR systems I’ve interacted with just disconnect you if they can’t understand your input.

McDonald's prices are out of control. (cdn.masto.host)

Gee, it’s almost like corporations are gouging consumers so badly that their market advantages are being lost due to greed. Inflation this quickly isnt real. It’s what happens when you come off a global pandemic with millions dead and corporations see they can freely abuse you by exploiting the public zeitgeist that prices...

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

And it’s always wrong in the weirdest, someone-has-to-be-fucking-with-me ways. I ordered a sausage, egg, and cheese McMuffin for breakfast the other day. I hate their cheese, so I ordered just sausage and egg.

I opened the wrapper to my sandwich, and I had a sausage patty and 3 slices of cheese. It was rung up correctly, so I truly have no clue what was going on in the back.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

It was true at one point, but has since changed. The systems are totally air-gapped and worked 100% of the time, so there was never a reason to change them.

Also true: Boeing still uses floppies to update their 747s.

I downloaded my first porn from Kazaa, over dial-up.

In AOC’s case in particular, she was boosted by a law we passed that matched personal donations with a certain amount of public funds as well. It was intended to allow people like her (i.e. the not-already-disgustingly-wealthy) a more viable route to government. So there are some places that are keeping an eye on campaign finance, albeit at a glacial pace.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

What really baffles me is how people that have dishwashers manage to do this. Like, use bowl/whisk/cutting board/whatever > put in dishwasher. That way, all you have to do is wash your knives while everything else cooks.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Assuming the lawyers pass that entire $328MM on to the drivers (we know they won’t), that’s less than $3,000 per driver. I’d be willing to bet after the lawyers take their share, each driver gets a check for $1.47. Some victory.

It’s not that schools shouldn’t be funded by property tax, it’s that the revenue collected should be pooled and distributed equitably among the state’s public schools. Cincinnati OH does it this way (they call it “funding where you learn, not where you live”) so it’s possible with enough political will.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, maybe it’s because engine immobilizers have been standard equipment since 1998, and Hyundai/Kia are the only marques that chose to buck the trend? My family’s Mercury had an immobilizer… in 1995.

TurboDiesel,

Same thing with my mother; she started getting pummeled with cc mailers within 6 months of her filing.

True wireless in-ears have gotten a LOT better at ANC in the last few generations. Currently, I carry the Pixel Buds Pro as my dailies, but I also have a pair of the Soundcore Liberty 3 Pros. Both are pretty great, I tend to prefer the Pixel Buds because they play nicely with my Pixel. I’ve been through I-couldn’t-tell-you-how-many pairs of true wireless buds, and so far those two are the only ones I haven’t hated wearing for extended periods. I’d give an honorable mention to the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro as well (with the caveat that some of their functionality, including factory reset, requires a Samsung device).

NB: I tend not to like the silicone ear tips, so most of the time when I buy a new pair of buds I’ll buy Comply memory foam eartips. I’ve found they create a MUCH better seal and more confident fit. Evidently my ear canals are weirdly shaped, because no matter what brand, I seem to have trouble keeping anything in my ears and those helped.

I got the Life Q30 (or 35? I don’t know offhand, but they’re pretty similar) as a gift a couple Christmases ago. The sound is…alright out of the box. The stock EQ isn’t the best; I found it to be too bass heavy, but the app lets you set a custom preset. Battery life is really solid, and they come with both a USB-C cable and 3.5mm out of the box. The 3.5 works even if the battery is flat (you just don’t get ANC, obviously). ANC is definitely not as good as my old Bose QCs, but then again I haven’t found much that is. It’s good enough to make flying a lot quieter, though, and they’re loud enough without leaking to make up for the weaknesses in noise cancellation.

Holy shit, maybe someone should tell him to lay off the amphetamines… I can barely understand that word salad.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve had this happen enough times that I usually say something like “I’m so sorry, I recognize your face but I just can’t recall your name right now. Would you remind me again please?” Most people take that pretty well.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Yep! Truly, fake it 'til you make it. I hate social situations, but I can at least put on enough of a public face to get through them, partially through coping strategies like those.

€9.99/month if paying on the Web, €13/month if you want to pay from within the Android or iOS apps. Not worth it IMO, especially since they say nothing about not collecting your data.

E: pricing correction

TurboDiesel,

I see that now, I’ll edit. Thanks

Paying for a service that most of the rest of the world decided should already be covered.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

I didn’t say they would be. But to pretend American healthcare makes sense is beyond absurd. Workers are already taxed to fund Medicare/-aid (which we can’t access), then we’re also expected to pay private insurance premiums. The best part is that’s de minimis! All that gets you is a pass to get in the door.

Then you have to pay co-pays and coinsurance, and possibly your deductible. We pay SIGNIFICANTLY more than our peers in the wider world for no reason other than greed.

My understanding is they’re most likely going to move to a system like flu shots; you’ll get one a year for whichever variants are predicted to be most prevalent. (At least that’s what my GP thinks is most likely)

The reason they’re pushing these new vaccines in particular is because the current circulating variant is different enough to merit them.

Edit: They’re developing a combo COVID/flu vaccine. See here

As an IT worker, there are people already in the workforce who have literally no clue what a “drive” is because they don’t use traditional computers anymore. My youngest brother is a freshman in college; I offered to get him a laptop before he left as a bday present and he told me no. Apparently it’s all about iPads now.

TurboDiesel,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Well I’m a sysadmin; it’s in my nature to answer rogue tech questions :p.

I actually daily Win11 on my personal laptop. It’s… fine, realistically. I really only say you wouldn’t go out of your way to install it because if you have a machine that’s working well under Win10, I don’t see a compelling reason to upgrade.
