The apps you want to block entirely, you can go into Android settings for each of them individually, and turn off all their Mobile Data & WiFi access options.

Apps that you want to allow outside Proton VPN, you can add to the Split Tunneling list in Proton VPN. But you have to turn off the Block Without VPN option.

It sounds like that’ll get you what you want.

Short sighted mistake. Terrible Idea.

Adopt, Extend, Destroy Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. That’s the game plan. It’s worked so many times in the past.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

They don’t care about the user base we have today. They want to eliminate the potential user base we may have in a decade.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

This is why I’m in favor of not having await and see policy toward Threads. The safest thing to do is assume they’re lying.

Threads users aren’t Fediverse users. Meta isn’t another instance. Even former Meta employees should be treated with extreme suspicion for years if they try to defect.

Nobody who’s ever worked for “Big Social” should be allowed to touch the ActivityPub standard. It should be obvious that their livelihood goes against what it stands for.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

pick an instance that plans to defederate with them and you’re golden.

That’s not how this works. This is a threat to the concept of the fediverse. It doesn’t matter what instance any of us picks.

Threads already has hundreds of millions of users. Once they activate ActivityPub, they will be hundreds of times larger than the rest of the Fediverse combined. Instantly we will be a tiny minority of the users of this platform. That will give Meta unimaginable influence over this platform and technology.

I’m not sure I can spell it out more clearly.

@Steve@communick.news avatar

They are? That’s me also. I assumed I was getting a price hike. Why do you think we aren’t losing our 8$?

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Of course it’s photos only, and not an arbitrary folder sync, which would be able to do the same and much more. So annoying.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

I didn’t see that. That’s awesome!

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Yah. It is kinda of annoying how slow they can be. But they are making continual steady progress. I have no doubt, they’ll eventually get to a full office suite.

I’ve also noticed that practically every time they release something (even to beta) it works flawlessly. The only launch issue I remember, is large file uploads when Drive was first rolled out. The reliable bug free launch is very nice. Especially in a world where software is constantly pushed out too fast, then requires 6 months or more of bug fixing before it’s usable.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

I think you probably mean “It looks like I won’t like it.”

That way you aren’t making an objective claim about its quality.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Basically yes. He is going to remove much of the humor and replace it with more real character moments.

As the story is know so far. The company that made the popular trailer was hired to completely re-edit the entire movie, without Ayer’s involvement at all. The studio wanted something more like Guardians of The Galaxy. Which was not what Ayer made. So they just replaced him in the editing room, and made the mess we all know.

A poll: are followers-only posts on Mastodon public? (infosec.exchange)

On Mastodon, Followers-only posts are only visible to your followers – and to admins of any instances your followers on. But if you haven’t turned on “approve followes”, anybody who’s logged in to an instance you haven’t blocked can follow you and get access to your followers-only posts....

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Anything posted to “Social Media” in any way, I consider public. If you want privacy, you need something that’s directly one to one at least, ideally E2EE.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

It’s standard in plays to have an intermission. Almost no matter how long it actually runs. Even a 90min movie could have a 5min intermission.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

I’m not sure I’ve seen somone so proud of being a snob.

Well done.

Wouldn’t he say “The question we were looking for”?

Been a long time since I watched Jeopardy.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

You can’t legally control weather or not someone recognizes you on the street. There is no right to privacy in public spaces. It’s the principal that protects people filming the police. Any important public events really.

Steve, (edited )
@Steve@communick.news avatar

what places you visited and who with for every minute of every day

Well now that’s a different proposition.

Now you aren’t simply in a public place being photographed and identified by AI. Now you’re actively being monitored and tracked. That’s more like a person stalking you. That may be unethical, depending on who’s tracking you and why? Basically unless it’s law enforcement of some kind, with a specific warrant to track your location, it wouldn’t be ethical.

Steve, (edited )
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Those are both fantastic, but separate issues.

The effectiveness of any individual AI is separate from the ethics of the concept generally. Any specific implementation might not be reliable enough to depend on. That would have to be a discussion for each implementation. Perhaps a discussion of the reliability threshold any implementation would need to meet, in order to be used.

Also, another’s right to photograph and identify you while in public, is entirely separate from, and doesn’t effect, your right to try to conceal your identity.

Even both of those don’t touch the issue of keeping your image, and using your likeness to improve the AI product. (Which is something literally all of them ignore, along with every other copyright issue.) Since you didn’t give them the rights to use your likeness for that (or any) purpose, it would be unethical and already illegal for them to do so.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

While that is all true, it’s effectively saying nothing more than, “The misuse of a technology is unethical.” Which I think we can all agree on. So many people are pointing out obvious examples of abuse as arguments against the tech itself.

The original question was only about the technology itself. Which is only an interesting etical question if we assume, using it appropriately.

Steve,

The Play Store is installed by default, and doesn’t allow other app stores to be listed. So the only way to install another one, is to go out on the net and download an APK directly. When you try to install it, the system gives you a warning that it can be dangerous. Just those two hurdles are enough to ensure the vast majority of users will never leave the hurdle-less Play Store.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

“Monopoly - (economics) a market in which there are many buyers but only one seller”

Certainly a practical monopoly, if not a literal one. I would bet 99.9% of all app installs on android are through the Play Store.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

It’s both really.
As an app developer it’s a monopsony.
As an app user its a monopoly.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

My first reaction to the headline is “Of course another closeted Republican.”
But after reading it, this story is nothing but sad.

Kagi AI summary:

F.L. Bubba Copeland, the mayor of Smiths Station, Alabama and a Baptist pastor, died by suicide after a right-wing site published photos of him dressed as a woman. The site also revealed his online persona where he posted about transitioning genders. Though he asked the site not to publicly out him, they did so anyway. His church condemned his behavior as unbiblical. In his last sermon, Copeland acknowledged embarrassing photos but said his life would not change. When police later attempted a welfare check, Copeland took his own life in front of them. The superintendent, who was a friend, expressed anger at those who ridiculed Copeland, questioning if they were proud of driving him to suicide. Copeland’s church and community mourned his death and supported his family.

It does seem that way.

Ownership is a fake concept.

Steve, (edited )
@Steve@communick.news avatar

If ownership didn’t exist, the data wouldn’t be valuable enough to collect. You couldn’t sell it, because nobody would buy it, because they couldn’t use it to sell anything, since they don’t own anything either.

But that wasn’t really the point I was trying to make. The real point I meant is that fake concepts can still be useful. Like the concept of ownership.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Ownership is when one is allowed to keep all others from accessing or using a thing.

If that one is a person or corp., or the thing is physical or imaginary, it doesn’t change the nature of ownership itself.

A person or a corp could make different choices with their ownership rights. And ownership of physical or imaginary things have different enforcement challenges. But none of that changes the fundamental concept of ownership.

But as I said elsewhere: “The real point I meant is that fake concepts can still be useful. Like the concept of ownership.”

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

The enforcement of that ownership is entirely different, yes.
Basically the only way to maintain ownership of intangibles is to keep them a secret.

Also, don’t all intangibles fit the definition of information? I don’t recall running across any that wouldn’t, but I’m curious. Can you give an example of what you mean?

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Objectivity is a myth.

It’s not so much a myth, as an unobtainable goal that should be strived for. Like perfection. One can never be perfect, but one can always be better. There are such things as facts, and accuracy in describing them.

To say objectivity is a myth, seems to suggest nobody has any responsibility to try to accurately represent any facts. If someone claims blue light has a wavelength of 150nm, is that a perfectly valid opinion? Do lies exist?

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

But a lot of things are facts. You can’t say for a fact WW2 started at this date and time, because WW2 itself is just a convenient (though undefined) label for a collection of event’s. As you pointed out, you can pick a specific event, and place a factual time and date for it happening though. That would be objective. Or you could factually state that WW2 started in the 20 century, and avoid having to choose any more specific time.

While it might not be possible to be unbiased, it is always possible to be less biased. The way to do that is to understand the difference between facts and judgements, and avoid judgments where ever possible.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Exactly.
“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

I think you assumed that comment said something it didn’t.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Poorly written regulations with giant gaping loopholes for companies to skirt caused this.

You really blame the companies for following the law as written?

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Enforcement is also the EPA’s responsibility, not the companies.

And you can’t enforce the ‘spirit’ of the law. That’s not how laws work. That would be soooo easily abused.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

You’re not sure how advice on dealing with your problems will help fix those problems?

  1. Have problem.
  2. Get advice on how to fix problem.
  3. Implement the advice given.
  4. Problem fixed? No: Go to 2. Yes: Win!
Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

The same procedure applies to depression as well.

Steve, (edited )
@Steve@communick.news avatar

I wouldn’t have one.

It honestly always seemed silly to me. Unless I told the helmsman to wait for some reason, they should just go as soon as they’re ready. Why wait an extra moment just for me to say “go”?

That said, if it was some kind of required protocall, I’d pick a different silly term each time. Like “Banana Bread”, “Pencil”, or “Fuck off”.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

“I don’t believe there are any coincidences in a manner like this. I believe that Scripture, the Bible is very clear that God is the one that raises up those in authority. He raised up each of you, all of us. And I believe that God has ordained and allowed each one of us to be brought here for this specific moment in this time. This is my belief. I believe that each one of us has a huge responsibility today, to use the gifts that God has given us to serve the extraordinary people of this great country and they deserve it.”

That includes the Democrats, right?

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

I can’t describe how much I like this idea.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Prohibition doesn’t make things go away. It only makes them more sneaky.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

I assume they come with a sufficient power source?
That may be the real value.

Which sequels/prequels/spinoffs made the originals somehow worse?

The Matrix is an often used example, but for me it’s the Alien Prequels - especially Alien: Covenant really makes the Original Alien much worse. When the original was released in 1979 it had the perfect Monster. A dangerous killing machine of unknown origin. The missing background of the alien is a big part of its scary mess....

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

How does one movie change the quality of another?

Do bad songs in an album make the good songs worse?

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Many albums are made around a theme or idea. Or at least that’s the way musicians I like tend to do it.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Doesn’t discrimination need to be allowed so the site can ban people for things without breaking their own rules?

Banning in one way or annother is kind of the definition of discrimination.

Steve,
@Steve@communick.news avatar

Hey! Fascists are more than just banning things, you know.
