How will we ever get away from plastics when they are ubiquitous for safety

Plastic seals food, sterile medical implements, medicine, beverages, etc… it’s seems like plastic is used as a way to seal things safely. Post pandemic rising, I see even more. My work used to be have plastic utensils in the cafeteria, for example, an already wasteful thing. Now, post-2020, every fork, knife, and spoon is...

Everyone should read the Plastics Paradox. It’s good to be well informed.

I need to record over some Hi8 tapes; 5 tapes, ~2½ hours each. I can record audio and video directly. What should I put on there? (kbin.social)

I'm getting rid of an old Hi8 camcorder and figured I'd throw in the tapes with it, but I want to wipe the contents of the tapes before I do. I don't have a huge magnet or anything I can use to quickly erase the tapes, so the only option is to record over them using the camcorder. Instead of being boring and just muting it and...

You could try a homemade sex tape. If it gets leaked you could become rich and famous like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian.

I’m shocked to see there are people that still watch TV shows. I thought network TV was an ‘all but dead’ medium.

They can choose to take hormone blockers at 12, but they can’t choose to have sex until they’re 18 (depending on local statutes). The laws are filled with hypocrisy.

This is part of how a much smaller army can defeat a larger invading force. The locals have all their supplies. The invading force has to bring everything with them.

I have found pictures from decades ago that I didn’t remember until seeing the pic. When you get old, your memory gets really hazy. Looking at old photos really helps to bring back those memories.

Does the American accent or British accent sound better?

I grew up with a thick Australian accent with a drawl I dislike, and have been consciously trying to change it for a while. The problem is I tried to make it sound more American at first but keep getting drawn to speaking “Britishly”. Now it’s a Frankenstein of all 3 accents and I don’t know what to go with....

Oyster_Lust,
@Oyster_Lust@lemmy.world avatar

There are a lot of different British and American accents, depending on which part of the country they’re from. Some sound much better than others. I don’t know much about Australian accents. Is there just one, or many different ones depending on their location?

I remember trying to watch Mad Max a long time ago. I didn’t make it very far in the movie because I couldn’t understand what they were saying most of the time. I find most American and British accents easier to understand, although there are a few that are harder.

I would love to get an employee that would work more than 25 hours a week. I struggle to get any employees at all. Anyone willing to work can have all the hours they want. I’m currently working 80 hours a week because I can’t find any reliable help. I know lots of business owners who are in the same predicament. There are so many job openings and so few people to fill them.

Oyster_Lust,
@Oyster_Lust@lemmy.world avatar

I’m saying that op said they can’t get more than 25 hours at $15/hour. My point was that there are tons of jobs out there. They are the one standing in their own way, but blaming someone else. It’s a common thread that I’ve seen in the wake of the pandemic. I don’t know what the root cause of it is, but it’s frustrating to see people limit themselves, but have the complete inability to accept their own role in their circumastances.

I’m a recovering alcoholic. It’s a very common issue among addicts to blame everyone for their own shortcomings. It’s just sad to see this character flaw spreading to society in general.

As a recovering alcoholic, I’ve seen people that had lost everything and become homeless due to addiction. They are starting over with a huge deficit, yet manage to get sober, get a job, then a better job, then become profoundly successful. That’s why it frustrates me to see people without the huge burdon of addiction fall into the same gutter of thinking that their position in life is someone else’s fault. It’s a very bad place to be mentally. I’ve said for years that I think everyone should go through rehab. It does what the schools don’t seem to do anymore. It teaches you how to take control of your own life, stop blaming others, and get out of the way of yourself.

Oyster_Lust,
@Oyster_Lust@lemmy.world avatar

You’re missing the point completely. Op is blaming other people for his/her lack of income. It’s not other people’s responsibility to provide you with an income. You have to do what it takes to provide it. There are people who sit around and blame others for their circumstances in life, and there are others who just do what it takes. At some point, when you’re an adult, you have to start taking responsibility for yourself. As I stated in another comment, I’ve seen addicts go from homeless to very successful because they learned to stop blaming others for their circumstances and start accepting responsibility for themselves.

Life is easier now than it’s ever been, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Life is still hard. You have to be willing to work, and do what it takes to get what you want.

It doesn’t matter what any job pays. If you work hard, the you should be able to make more. That may mean getting more hours because you’re worth it. It may mean moving up and getting a raise. It may mean working 2 or 3 jobs.

I’ve started several jobs at minimum wage, but I’ve never made minimum wage for more than a month. I work hard at everything I do, whether I like it or not. I’ve also worked 3 jobs, and been homeless. I’m not homeless anymore, and it’s not because I whined about not making enough money. It’s because I busted my ass and made myself indispensable.

The opportunities are out there. They’re not going to come knocking at your door. You have to get out there, work hard, and find them. There was a time when that was just common sense. I just don’t understand why people think they should just be handed opportunities.

Oyster_Lust,
@Oyster_Lust@lemmy.world avatar

That would never fly in the US. They complain about water usage so much that they regulate shower heads so that they barely drip water, and toilets so that they don’t have enough water to flush solid waste. The bidet would just blow the regulators’ heads with all the water usage.

    When the fuck did a mobile hotspot become something you have to pay extra for?

    It’s my goddamn motherfucking mobile data and MY PHONE. I should be able to use it however I want. My wifi went down because the greedy, cunt-faced shitbags at Comcast stole taxpayer subsidies to enrich themselves instead of actually providing the service we’re paying for. Play Protect is meant to protect Google from people installing apps outside of the Play Store.

    Be honest, do you trawl a user profile to downvote/upvote when you see a comment you dislike/goes against your beliefs?

    Saw this a lot on Reddit. Its not specific to here, just trying to gauge how people think. I’d see people posting about how “X said this! Have you seen what else they said in their site history?” And a stream of votebombing would happen....

    Equality should be in protection of rights. People are not equal, and never will be. They should have equal rights, though.

    Steve Vai is a better guitarist than I am. He shouldn’t have his fingers broken so that we both have equal ability to play the guitar.

    Trying to make people equal in every way is evil. It only brings the best in every field down to the level of the worst, since there’s no way to bring everyone up to the level of the best in every field.
