Yeah I think a lot of Chibnals detractors are in for a rude awakening. Sure, you can say it wasn’t woke for RTD1 but that’s nostalgia considering he:

  • parodied Tony Blair with John Simms master
  • created an out and proud pansexual in Harkness
  • portrayed the Doctor as ambiguous sexually, accepting advances from Jack and Lynda (?) In parting of ways
  • the slitheen two-parter being commentary on the war on terror and false claims of WMDs

I think that in the time since 2010, RTDs writing experience and the general increase in right wing radicalisation since 2015 are combining to create these decisions like able bodied Davros or 14 regenerating clothes

That’s literally what I thought and still kinda think even after his comments

I suspect it will be still family viewing, just a little dark for some young kids to watch solo maybe

I started this summer, and I’ve made it to the Pertwee era last week.

VPN for now sadly. Torrent sites might have it at some point but not yet last I checked.

It wouldn’t be so bad if classic who was consistently paced. The black and white episodes had some real bangers that I was engaged for the fill 22 minutes, but a lot were just slogs.

In principle I do believe a good story can carry anything - visuals are secondary in a compelling plot.

Gatekeeping the Fediverse? Cringe

I wish I could say this was me but there’s been a couple of times thst I’ve been knocked on my ass by something, but every test I’ve taken came up negative

I deadass probably watched a reconstruction in my classic who watch through but I didn’t even remember it until i started paying attention to the 60th special rumors.

Josh Snares has some videos on it iirc

I actively try to post when I see this happen.

Precisely! I try to comment and post partly for the purpose of generating activity

Love the Avengers Tower-style UNIT headquarters

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

I think that they want to go for a big, epic, nostalgia-heavy trio of specials to entice people back in before Ncuti comes into the full series next year. I saw the tower and it’s the single part of the trailer that’s sticking with me. I always loved the first RTD era for it’s somewhat grittier, critical view of UNIT in the context of the rising surveillance state of the early 2000s, so this tower seems like an extension of that viewpoint, given how entrenched said anti-terrorist dogma has gotten.

I thought it would be for the 60th so that would mean November for some of it, and I think then it’s a Christmas Special. Idk how many total are with 14 before the proper season with 15.

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

I thought Hayden melded aspects of Matt Lanter’s performance from TCW so well! It felt like he was both prequel Anakin and Clone Wars Anakin, delivering “snips” perfectly while also channeling his campy sith stare from Ep III.

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

Part of me definitely wishes we had gotten to the galaxy by episode 2 and had instead had the character-focuaed stuff be happening in a far more exciting context. It’s given me the same sort of annoyance I would get when you’re trying to leave town for a road trip only to keep getting delayed by needing gas, getting hungry, having to pee, etc.

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

I think they’re probably doing what they did for the Clones, have a set actor for live action and TV. Casting an additional person to play the young Rosario Dawson version prevents that from getting muddied.

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

Because that sure didn’t seem like a ‘redeemed’ Anakin.

I thought it did. The world between worlds is tied to the cosmic force, so “force ghost” anakin could probably appear however he wanted, so sith eyes and red saber were used because thats what Ahsoka was aftaid of, and confronting fears is very Jedi - Yoda went through a similar experience fighting a manifestation of the dark side within him. Additionally, Ahsoka’s fear was also impacting what we saw on screen - I don’t think he was choosing to flash into Vader, I think that was Ahsoka projecting.

On isolated, super rural areas where you’re the only person on a dirt road for miles, I think it might be unavoidable during parts of the year or if the road is really intensive to bike (steep, sharp curves for example) BUT that’s where you should be able to drive to your village or town center and pick up the 15-30 minute regional train.

Likewise that would mean the people closer to town who might already be walking to the barber or liquor store would also be able to walk to the station if they needed to go farther.

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

Neurodivergent people everywhere appreciated how it made them go to being 5 bucks at a gas station instead of 20 + shipping

Trekman10,

I believe Kbin already fills that role either as a fork or at least as a similar platform

The GM has the power to present a heist, but unless the GM is really railroady, the players have the power to make it a ransom, a demolition job or just ignore everything and join the circus.

This doesn’t sound contradictory to “planning a heist”. I guess I just took it to mean that the setup was a heist and that the punchline was that they had little control over the tone during actual play. I feel like ransoms, a demolition job, or joining in the circus fall within the “heist” aesthetic and narrative.

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

I think people have lots of definitions for what constitutes railroading. I personally don’t think anything in the meme constitutes going off the rails.

In my view, if you build or plan the next session based on where you think they’re gonna go next and what they seem like they want to do as players, and then someone goes “Well can I actually just make a 90-degree turn off the road to the city that we’re talked about going to last week into these random woods instead of engaging with the hours of content you made for us,” you aren’t railroading them for going “sure, but I’ll have to pause the session here so I can put the time and prep into this that you deserve as players, or we play Dnd today.”

Matt Colville has a great vid on this, but I can’t remember its title. I think he’s done a few videos that talked about railroading.

Do you feel that the PCs actually pretty smart, but the DM is still making jokes like they aren’t? Or is it some of the PCs are using “oh I’m dumb” as an excuse to derail gameplay and ruin ingame plans?

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

This is the ideal. I think a problem also comes up because I think a lot of people (DMs included) feel like “peak Dnd” is when you could in theory, go anywhere and do anything your party wants, and you just need to review few quick notes and be ready to go.

Trekman10,

I’d really like for PeerTube to take off, especially with how YouTube/Google seem to be escalating the war on adblockers.

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

Okay and? Like, you’ve listed the problem, which I think was already known to anyone passionate enough to care about PeerTube and to want it to grow, do you have any ideas or solutions or are you only here to demoralize and discourage?

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

I really hate how interwiki navigation sucks on Fandom. Like, they’ve done all this branding and centralizing of the Fandom platform, yet I’m pretty sure they only fairly recently started logging you in on all wikis whenever you signed in on one.

Its all just to try and be some hip pop culture thing for use to “consoom” without any effort to actually take advantage of being a central platform for the repository of lore from across culture.

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

this would be cool, but I could see it causing issues for places like Memory Alpha, which have a really strict and well-defined manual of style and acceptable references. I frequently see things on other wikis that you’d never see on Wookiepedia, Tardis Data Core, and/or Memory Alpha, like fanart embedded in articles, links to YouTube videos, incomplete drafts without proper tagging, etc.

EDIT: Conversely I could really see it benefiting the smaller wikis, especially ones with lots of overlap with each other (all the various Marvel/DC wikis, the specific Clone Wars wiki separate from the main Star Wars one, etc)

I only watched it all for the second time since it came out a couple of weeks back (I sort of fell off the Doctor Who bandwagon and have been getting back on. It was gradual, where first I just watched everything 1 time as it came out). I actually had to pace myself with some of the scenes – and it made me want to watch “Years and Years” that he produced or wrote given how dystopian and much more uncomfortable certain aspects of Children of Earth felt 10+ years later.

LGBTQ+ isn't optimal

I’m sorry if it’s not my olace to say this, qnd I don’t wish to offend anyone, but lesbians are gay, right? Maybe “gay” has once meant only “homesexual men”, but now many lesbians call themselves “gay” so having both the “l” anf the “g” seems redundant. In fact, an even broader definition of “gay”...

Fun fact: in french ChatGPT sounds like “chat j’ai peté” which is “cat, I farted”.

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

Chibber’s first series was also kinda earthbound too. I always preferred when Earth was in danger instead of some weird Doctor-centric plot involving his impeding death and how he gets out of it like dominated Moffat-era who.

Trekman10,
@Trekman10@sh.itjust.works avatar

God forbid the series have relatable stakes and be grounded. Gimme my silly space fantasy 100% all the time. ./s
