In this case, they literally had to. The name “maccas” is so ubiquitous in Australia they needed to trademark it and start using it. Otherwise, some genius could have opened a burger joint called “Maccas” and been completely fine.

I hate to correct you, because T2 is indeed better than the original - but it came out in 1991.

Take heart though, Empire Strikes Back came out in 1980, Aliens came out in 1986 and Star Trek 2 Wrath of Khan came out in 1982. All of these stand the test of time and could be used for your example.

Perl still relevant in 2023/24?

hi, i was interested if perl is still relevant in this day and age. Perl has been on the decline for a very long time now. Perl 6 (now named 'raku) not being backwards compatible with perl 5 code made the already small perl community even smaller by splitting it in half. A good example is lisp with it’s thousands of different...

Nath,
@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

It was used for everything in the late 90’s. I get nostalgic when I see a bit of perl on the web these days, but I sure don’t miss it.

The water/weight comes up all the time. Filling a 10L bucket, I know that is going to weigh 10kg. I know I can lift it and my kid can’t.

The energy one, I’m not even sure is right. We don’t use calories, we use kilojoules. A joule is used to lift 1kg 1m. It’s not something I ever use. I use kilojoules for tracking food I ate today, that’s about it.

“Fairly cold”? I’ve been in 0c a few times in my life and every time it was freezing!

Isn’t 100f the temperature your blood is meant to be?

I’d make it whatever the retirement age is. In Australia, that would be 67. If we have an age where we agree it’s time to collect your pension and live out your life, then it should apply to politicians as well.

No, we don’t actually have this policy. Plenty of our pollies are over 67.

Spanish soccer player Jenni Hermoso accuses Luis Rubiales of sexual assault for World Cup kiss (apnews.com)

The prosecutors’ office in Madrid said that, according to a sexual consent law passed last year, Rubiales could face a fine or a prison sentence of one to four years if found guilty. The new law eliminated the difference between “sexual harassment” and “sexual assault,” sanctioning any unconsented sexual act.

Nath,
@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

Does Spanish law apply if the act took place in Australia?

Not that sexual assault is legal in Australia, either. Just curious why they’re talking about Spanish law - wouldn’t this come under Australian law?

I can’t tell whether you have a funny accent, simply don’t know Harry Potter or are trolling. This is one of his most famous spells. Huge build up to this moment on both the book and the movie.

Some people (I’m super guilty of this) are terrible at paperwork. They get in there and fix a problem. Then they fix another problem. Then another. They don’t prioritize documenting the things they fixed, because they see the next broken thing as more important than some paperwork.

Then we get to the end of the week. That employee hasn’t finished their assigned work because they spent half the week fixing problems. Only it’s four days later and they don’t remember all the things they fixed earlier in the week.

Is this an unproductive employee? They were set a task and they didn’t complete it. They have little to show for the time they worked this week.

I hate tracking software and would never want it on my computer. But, I can see it being employed to demonstrate productive employees flying under the radar just as easily as it shows employees slacking off.

Some of us just don’t draw big signs and say ‘look at me!’ They just get in there and get stuff done.

I’m a New Zealand citizen. Like what happened to a bunch of Australian pollies a few years back. Actually, it was because of those scandals that I learned I was Kiwi and had been my whole life.

We need to have a vote on this because it is a constitutional change. There have been a few advisory bodies over the years, but then the opposition gets into power and they kill them off. Having it enshrined in the constitution means that will no longer be possible.

The details really aren’t that important. How the body is compromised isn’t going to be part of the constitution. And frankly, as a white person, it isn’t really my place to tell indigenous people how they should put this advisory body together. They’re not in parliament. They aren’t voting on bills. They don’t have veto rights. They just have a channel where they can speak on topics under discussion.

Before anyone starts to say even this is too much power, ask yourself how much power Rupert Murdoch should have. Because he and every other billionaire in the country has a pretty loud voice.

Not a lot is going to change from this. Why bother then? Listen to or read of the Uluru Statement From the Heart. It’s only a page long. There is no hidden agenda. 300+ first nation tribes from around the nation got together to make it.

But Windows always came with Solitaire - even 30+ years ago. It was included originally to teach users how to use a mouse. Solitaire makes you click, double click and drag.

Removing Solitaire caused its own backlash. They can’t win with that one.

Isn’t that just controlling your breathing? Get your bcd to a neutral boyant point and then do the rest with your lungs.

At least, that’s what I do and I wasn’t aware this was something experienced divers had a lot of trouble with. I suppose I don’t ask people though.

Swimming backwards while filming with your hands is a neat trick though. I always reverse with my arms, so I’d be keen to see how you do that!

President Lincoln didn’t die instantly. He died nine hours later. I’m not American, so that may be commonly taught to kids in the USA - but I remember being surprised by this when I learned about it as an adult.

Why were you fired?

  • I stole a coworker’s wallet
  • I defrauded Walmart buying gift cards
  • I am very stupid

That’s an impressive trifecta.

I may or may not have wrapped this one inside an tag on a web server in the 90’s.

And it I did do this, I sure wouldn’t mail the apache access log of that link to myself daily for a giggle.

I haven’t used Opera in a long time, but I used it heavily 20 years ago. Back then you had to pay for it or there was a big ad banner on the toolbar.

It certainly wasn’t always Chromium based, Chrome didn’t come along until 2009 or something. Not sure when that change happened.

If I had to go back to that job I was doing (Internet Help desk) again, I’d consider Opera again. It was fast at navigating an intranet site where all the images were cached locally, but the killer feature for me was the back/forward. If you went back, all the stuff you typed in the form was still there. So you could resubmit it if the session had timed out or there was an issue.

I still use mouse gestures (an Opera thing) via extensions with whatever browser I have used since.

Not rich? Or is Rich rich?

Nath,

Legally, you are entirely correct.

As an admin of a Lemmy instance though, I can assure you that the entire userbase of Aussie.zone would riot if I decided to simply take over a username because I thought it was cool. And they’d be right to. Even for a guy whose yardstick of outrageous actions is so out of alignment with the norm, this was not cool.

Nath,
@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

I honestly can’t claim credit for how wholesome the instance is. The users make the place what it is. I spend maybe 15 minutes a day reviewing user account requests and reports. I can say that 0% of the users I’ve had to ban were locals. The locals are marvellous.

You wake up in a quarrantine zone. Despite having no medical qualifications, you need to cure a global pandemic before you are permitted to leave.

If you manage to succeed, your reward is your life saved and then more debt than you can hope to repay in a thousand lifetimes when you leave quarrantine.

Nath,

Correct!

I just learned how to use the spoiler tag! That should probably be inside a spoiler tag.

You might be surprised. Half of us were either born overseas or had at least one parent born overseas. A little under a third of us have English as our second language. That doesn’t mean that two thirds of us only speak English - only that English is our ‘home’ language.

I know there’s a lot of multiculuralism in the USA also, but I don’t know whether those percentages compare.

We’re not in fetus territory, here. A premature baby born at 28 weeks has an 80-90% chance of surviving and is unlikely to have any health issues.

The article doesn’t say why they waited so long to reach this decision, but on the face of it this case starts to blur the line between abortion and murder.

Google is their biggest donor. They pay $$$ to be the default search engine in Firefox.

But Microsoft would happily give a not-insignificant amount to have Bing be the default search engine, and everyone knows it.

It’s a symbiotic relationship. Google sorta need to pay up. Firefox needs the funding.

Google does not control the running of Firefox.

Chris Nolan Barbie sounds fun! I’m not certain that pink is in his colour palette, however.

I haven’t seen any of Great Gerwig’s stuff, though.

Edit: I’m totally blaming autocorrect for the typo, but I’m not going to fix it because the Gatsby joke is too funny.

Click bait article is clickbaity.

David Furness and Elton John merely told the court that Kevin Spacey did not attend a party at their place in either 2003 or 2004. That his only appearance at a party was 2001.

That’s not “celebrity support”. That’s merely testifying facts to the court. These facts may help Mr. Spacey’s case, but they are not the same as the sort of character endorsement the headline implies.

Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...
