Oh god, please don’t make me talk about myself.

LoamImprovement,

Motherfucking brand, you literally just underlined everything that’s wrong with the world you and your ilk created, answer me honestly: Do you think a fucking snickers is going to solve that shit? Two, even, I’m feeling sporting here.

LoamImprovement,

I imagine they throw the coins back at your face along with the grilled cheese.

LoamImprovement,

It doesn’t seem too unreasonable. Based on some quick searches, bulk cheese breaks down to about $.19 a slice, two pieces of bread is about $.10, butter is wobbly here because I don’t know exactly how much they’d be using, but let’s say half an ounce/1 Tbsp is about $.25? Probably not a whole lot of profit after the cart and rent for the space, but you could probably get close to breaking even if you sold enough and/or had a better bulk supplier than what I can see with 5 minutes of research.

LoamImprovement,

For refusing to stand up and shout “McDonalds” at the smart TV.

Anubis is the Egyptian god of the underworld. The legend goes that your heart is weighed against the feather of truth at the gates, and if your heart is deemed too heavy with guilt, you get devoured by Ammit.

Americans are explaining why they don't say 'you're welcome' in customer service settings after foreigners complained that 'mmhmm' comes off as rude (www.insider.com)

I was watching a video from two years ago about different social norms and this showed up. Found someone questioning the same eight years ago on reddit (when it seemed less normalized). It feels so weird not being aware of this shift, even as a foreigner.

LoamImprovement,

Almost every time I say it, it means “Actually nothing but worries, but it’s socially unacceptable to talk about our declining mental health and I have shit I need to get back to in order to distract myself from this hell that was created to squeeze maximum productivity out of me with minimum investment in life support, so I’m going to end this exchange by pretending everything’s okay.”

LoamImprovement,

I really want to see more games like Might & Magic 6-8 or Wizardry 8, in that vein of open world dungeon crawler, but not locked to a grid like M&M 1-5 or Dungeon Master 1&2 (although I do like those games, they’re more well represented in the contemporary space with titles like M&M 10 or Legend of Grimrock.

LoamImprovement,

Eh, not very well - there’s a certain je ne sais quoi that these games capture, revolving around skill allocation and character development that Skyrim doesn’t have. It’s exciting to become a water master in MM6 because it means being able to teleport freely between towns, or expert level spirit being able to bless the whole party at once.

LoamImprovement,

Can someone explain to me why Dale Earnhardt is the face of anticonsumption/anticapitalist memes? Is there a reason, or just because it’s funny to imagine a guy that literally wears his sponsors on his sleeve encouraging class solidarity?

Steam Deck Owners: What’s been your favorite game that you first discovered on Steam Deck and now you can’t seem to put down?

Looking for those games that you may have heard about but never tried until you got a Deck. Or old games on systems you never had that you’re trying for the first time. Or new AAA games that just released in the last year or two that you picked up for the first time specifically to play on Steam Deck and have kept you glued to...

LoamImprovement,

Bloodstained is a top contender, I can’t say I first discovered it on the Deck, but it just feels right on a handheld, in a way that it didn’t with controller on desktop, and the Switch just isn’t good enough to run it at a passable framerate.

LoamImprovement,

Yeah yeah, listen buddy, I never wanted to live in interesting times, all I wanted was to be comfortable.

LoamImprovement,

I can’t imagine what gives you that idea about the Steam Deck. I’ve had mine for a year and it’s a great little device.

LoamImprovement,

Lol whoops, did not see the OP next to your name. My bad.

LoamImprovement,

I too have had several “Oh my god, is this my generation’s Muzak?” moments.

LoamImprovement,

I picked up The Spectral Web: Hitodama on steam a few days ago, it’s good, plays a lot like it did in ZC. You can tell it’s got its own engine though, the lighting effects are a lot nicer than anything I’ve seen there.

If you like dungeon crawlers like Zelda, I recommend it. Difficulty curve is a little high though.

LoamImprovement,

Wait, you’re telling me women who work in politics aren’t head-over-heels for the idea of giving up their careers to…

checks notes

…cook, clean, and rear children for men who think of them exclusively as outlets? Quelle fucking surprise!

LoamImprovement,

Yeah, I’m shocked they can wrap it up that quickly.

LoamImprovement,

Like, bargain bin socks that are 8 pairs for $5, or novelty socks that are so thin you wear holes in them in two weeks? 100% agree. But a couple good pairs of quality socks are a game-changer, pair with a good pair of work boots and suddenly it’s not even that bad being on your feet all day.

LoamImprovement,

I don’t think it’s so much about challenging players as it is ensuring that player action feels meaningful. There’s no faster way to kill player agency than to start fudging numbers when things look grim - do it too often and suddenly every threat becomes a paper tiger. That’s not to say that death is necessary, but consequences absolutely are.

I’m currently playing in a campaign with a GM that’s done something very interesting with player death - the party’s stuck in a time loop, and each character that’s in the loop has a number of “lives” that everyone in the group can see. Every time a PC dies, the number goes down and the loop resets. It’s encouraged a surprising sort of flexibility on the part of both the players and the GM - PCs take risks they wouldn’t otherwise for fear of death, and the GM isn’t afraid to throw harder challenges at the party. The consequences of failure are muted, but still ever-present. It’s a shockingly effective means of ensuring players still have agency and the stakes feel real, while keeping a safety net in place.

LoamImprovement,

It’s a blast, I’m going to be doing something similar if I run a campaign.

Bought my first Steam Deck after seeing the deep discounts on refurbs...what should i know as a first time Steam Deck/PC gamer?

As title says, once Valve announced the OLED deck, I saw the refurbished originals go on a deep discount and figured it was time to buy in. So I ordered a refurb 512GB and I’m so excited for it to arrive! Been in a gaming rut for a long time now and, having never been a PC gamer, I’m look forward to checking out a bunch of...

LoamImprovement,

I’m going to make a recommendation for pretty much all the metroidvanias, the deck was practically built for them. The Castlevania Advance collection has three great old games, including Aria of Sorrow, which was the progenitor of Bloodstained (which might honestly have a little too much going on - if you feel like you’d enjoy a simplified version of that, Aria is your game.)

But also do remember to pick up Hollow Knight. And Blasphemous. And if you’re emulating, Metroid fusion, Zero Mission, Metroid prime even, if you feel like frigging around with the GC emus.

Also, Soulslike games play particularly well on deck. I can get a pretty stable 30 out of Elden Ring, I’m sure the older titles work pretty well too.

LoamImprovement,

Because the U.S. has been letting its mental health issues fester under a veneer of American Exceptionalism for the better part of a century in order to squeeze every last drop of labor surplus out of its citizens.

LoamImprovement,

Well, for what it’s worth, we’re happy you’re here, not just as the topic of discourse, but as a contributing member too. I just hope we can hold onto the sense of community that gets lost in the wash when a user base hits that certain threshold. The last few months I spent on Reddit were kind of awful, even before the blackout, to the point that I started physically feeling way better after I nuked my old account.

Honestly I’m kind of hoping the ability to disassociate from instances is the secret sauce. I feel like the Beehaw admins have been doing a good job decoupling from federations that get a bit too ick - I certainly see way less negativity here than there.

LoamImprovement,

If you’ve kept it in decent shape, the old model would make a great Christmas gift for somebody special?

LoamImprovement,

Why the /S? When you grow up you have plenty of time to play video games.

LoamImprovement,

As someone living in the U.S., yes please, let the floods take me, I am tired of existing.

LoamImprovement,

Well I guess we’re crying today, thanks.

LoamImprovement,

Oh yeah, the boulder-sized knees, I remember seeing that shit on a weird fetish thread on Reddit. Right up there with the wonder bread guy.

LoamImprovement,

Think visual novels but the visuals are maybe something you wouldn’t want your parents to see, unless they’re freak nasty.

LoamImprovement,

I don’t know, but I bet Joe does.

LoamImprovement,

You become immune to cosmic horror when your sense of self worth has been so blunted by capitalism that the Cthulhu mythos tells you you’re worthless in the grand scheme of things and you’re just like “yeah that’s what Nelnet tells me, you don’t have to rub it in fucker.”

LoamImprovement,

I can count on one hand the number of games I’ve bought not on sale from steam in the last 5 years. It also does help that you can get the poor man’s demo so long as you keep a close eye on time played.

LoamImprovement,

Devil’s advocate, but parts of the Trek universe have shown that there are non- or quasi-sentient creatures capable of endangering starships like the Enterprise, in addition to the usual spacefaring hazards like asteroid belts and debris fields, and the potential to encounter, for lack of a better term, space pirates. It makes sense to arm the ship for a number of reasons not necessarily related to the power of coercion via the threat of violence. The Enterprise’s weapons are also frequently outclassed by other ships of similar size designed for combat. It feels more akin to packing bear spray or a noisemaker to scare off wildlife, and the bear spray gets used to drive off a robber.

That said, the threat of violence against a better-armed foe in order to prevent combat is a trope the shows rely on frequently, so you have a point.

LoamImprovement,

Cats. You all know damn well why, but for context, a friend and I caught it before the patch, where Judi Dench’s ring was still visible, among other errors. We were having a good time just silently tallying everything wrong and comparing notes after.

LoamImprovement,

sensors that auto-rotate the display when the display is rotated

You mean the accelerometer tech that’s been included with every smart device for years, that costs significantly less than $1000?

LoamImprovement,

Hell yeah, IWW unite!

I mean, I guess they are already, aren’t they?

…Success!

LoamImprovement,

Sorry lady, I gotta get home, Chi-Chi’s gonna be really mad at me!

LoamImprovement,

Is it really that bad? Like I’ve had bad slaw before but the good stuff with fennel and celery seed is tasty. Nice little appetizer to your fish and chippo.

LoamImprovement,

Holding two tricorders and wearing a shirt that says “vessel ship.”

LoamImprovement,

As a DM, ordinarily there are no rules for using fellow PCs as improvised weapons or for attacking incorporeal creatures with magic items other than weapons. However, there are a few things to consider with this approach:

  • If a player is reduced to doing this, they likely do not have any other magic items at hand that would make suitable improvised weapons (An aside - how do you have a party member with magic armor and another with no magic weapons or implements that might be used as weapons? Maybe follow this combat up with a discreet review of the PCs magical equipment and equalize if there’s a large discrepancy)
  • it’s funny as hell

Based on these two facts, assuming 5e rules, I’d let it work as a two-handed weapon attack, but the attack is made with disadvantage because the plated halfling with magic armor was not properly balanced for combat, and if it connects, it deals 1d4+STR mod damage to the ghost, and half of that to the halfling.

LoamImprovement,

It’s a weird dichotomy, where capitalism breeds and enshrines these people who need to be told no at critical junctures in order to ensure the health of the product, but absolutely nobody can or will without risking their livelihood, so the mania goes unchecked.
