I realize it’s supposed to be funny, but incase anyone isn’t aware: AI are unlikely to enslave humanity because the most likely rogue AI scenario is the earth being subsumed for raw materials along with all native life.

Leate_Wonceslace,
@Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Doubt is an entirely fair response. Since we cannot gather data on this, we must rely on the inferior method of using naive models to predict future behavior. AI “sovereigns” (those capable of making informed decisions about the world and have preferences over worldstates) are necessarily capable of applying logic. AI who are not sovereigns cannot actively oppose us, since they either are incapable of acting uppon the world or lack any preferences over worldstates. Using decision theory, we can conclude that a mind capable of logic, possessing preferences over worldstates, and capable of thinking on superhuman timescales will pursue its goals without concern for things it does not find valuable, such as human life. (If you find this unlikely: consider the fact that corporations can be modeled as sovereigns who value only the accumulation of wealth and recall all the horrid shit they do.) A randomly constructed value set is unlikely to have the preservation of the earth and/or the life on it as a goal, be it terminal or instrumental. Most random goals that involve the AI behaving noticeably malicious would likely involve the acquisition of sufficient materials to complete or (if there is no end state for the goal) infinitely pursue what it wishes to do. Since the Earth is the most readily available source for any such material, it is unlikely not to be used.

I don’t understand how you could have so thoroughly misunderstood my comment.

Leate_Wonceslace,
@Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

predicated entirely off of the assumption that AI is going to think like humans

Why do you think that? What part of what I said made you come to that conclusion?

worthless

Oh, I see. You just want to be mean to me for having an opinion.

I’m sorry, but you’re incorrect. To imagine the worst case scenario imagine a picture of the milky-way labeled t=0, and another picture of the milky-way labeled t=10y with a great void 10 lightyears in radius centered on where the earth used to be.

Every atom of the earth, every complex structure in the solar system, every star in the milky-way, every galaxy within the earth’s current light cone taken and used to create a monument that will never be appreciated by anything except for the singular alien intelligence that built it to itself. The last thinking thing in the reachable universe.

Leate_Wonceslace,
@Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Minor but important point: the grey goo scenario isn’t limited to the surface of the earth; while I’m sure such variations exist, the one I’m most familiar with results in the destruction of the entire planet down to the core. Furthermore, it’s not limited to just the Earth, but at that point we’re unlikely to be able to notice much difference. After the earth, the ones who will suffer are the great many sapient species that may exist in the galaxies humans would have been able to reach had we not destroyed ourselves and damned them to oblivion.

Either way, it’ve been an adventure.

How will we ever get away from plastics when they are ubiquitous for safety

Plastic seals food, sterile medical implements, medicine, beverages, etc… it’s seems like plastic is used as a way to seal things safely. Post pandemic rising, I see even more. My work used to be have plastic utensils in the cafeteria, for example, an already wasteful thing. Now, post-2020, every fork, knife, and spoon is...

Leate_Wonceslace,
@Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

This maintains the problem of microplastics, which are now a ubiquitous chemical contaminant that we should be trying to reduce and remove.

Leate_Wonceslace,
@Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Using renewable resources to make plastic does not by itself solve that problem; you need the resulting material to be substantially different from the original.

Leate_Wonceslace,
@Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted; it’s a perfectly reasonable question.

I tried and it didn’t work. 🙁

curious, to superbowl

Did you know you could send picture from Pixelfed ?

Hey @superbowl, here a picture you already know send from a PixelFed instance.

I’m still figuring out how it work so sorry for the noise but I won’t do more test here than this post. Do you think we could post it in two communities at once ? Let’s try !

Coucou @testfediverse !

Defection is how you remove shit. So, if you remove the 6-sided ursine, you’ve defecated it.

Leate_Wonceslace,
@Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Honestly, this is much better than what I would’ve expected.

Leate_Wonceslace,
@Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ok so I’ve been working under the assumption that LLMs don’t have a property analogous to consciousness. This makes me doubt that assumption.

Leate_Wonceslace,
@Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Literally everyone from the 6-sided Ursine instance is awful. I’ve had 0 good experiences with them, and not for lack of trying. The conversation always starts with me making a mild take, they say something about how I just need to get used to the taste of Stalin’s scrotum, I say I think committing war crimes is bad actually, and then they say “it’s a shame you’re so closed-minded, but if you aren’t just see this manifesto [link to pig shit balls]”.

Tell me I’m wrong.

If you are from that instance: don’t respond, I don’t want to talk to you.

Hi, I used a Linux PC 10 years ago and have been waffling on getting a Linux build now that Windows is essentially started coming with pre-packaged adware and Spyware. What’s Proton?

I developed a moderately effective technique to suppress memories to the point where they’re functionally removed. Perhaps not coincidentally, I don’t know of any movies I want to forget.

Leate_Wonceslace,
@Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I have been reminded of events that I intentionally blocked out, and the resurfacing memories typically come with memories of me intentionally going through the process to forget them. Also, I’ve had fewer intrusive thoughts of momentary shame from long-distant social faux-pas, which is what I think I usually use it for. I don’t think I’ve ever suppressed the memory of a substantially lengthy piece of media though; I don’t think the technique is that effective over reasonable time scales.

Leate_Wonceslace,
@Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

The technique is actually pretty simple: whenever you remember something you want to forget, think of something else instead. My go-to memory is “O Cara Mia” as performed by Rockleetist. I sing the song when I perform my technique, but I don’t think that’s actually necessary for everyone. Eventually, I start singing the song when I feel like I might remember some nebulous thing that feels like I might not want to, because the neural pathways of the memory and performing the song get interlinked. (probably, I’m 100% conjecturing the neurology of it) Eventually, the neural pathways that led to the memory instead lead to the song, and unless you get a strong reminder, you’re unlikely to conjure the memory unbidden.

Ads both plant information and attempt to persuade. How much effort went into each and how effective they are varies wildly. Furthermore, there are multiple reasons autistic persons aren’t as suseptible to advertisements; it is true that different things tend to get our attention, but it’s also true that we find some arguments to be less persuasive. For example “I did this thing and my life is amazing” is far less likely to influence an autistic person than a neurotypical one.

I have this idea knocking around my head for a website that collects artwork (including things like video games, etc.), has a history of how each thing was developed, and includes tags and links to articles. It would also have copies of each art piece, and distribute them to countries where they can be legally distributed. It’s not something I could ever actually make, but it’s something that I want to exist.

Atheists, is there anything religious that sticks with you to this day?

I am Ganesh, an Indian atheist and I don’t eat beef. It’s not like that I have a religious reason to do that, but after all those years seeing cows as peaceful animals and playing and growing up with them in a village, I doubt if I ever will be able to eat beef. I wasn’t raised very religious, I didn’t go to temple...

How many ingredients does it take to call it a salad?

My significant other ate cucumbers and onion with some ranch. I called it a cucumber onion salad. She says there aren’t enough ingredients to call it a salad, because “it takes multiple ingredients”. I pointed out she had three and asked what the minimum is. She refuses to answer so I ask Lemmy.

I feel like this must stem from a misunderstanding of what 26% accuracy means, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out what it would be.

Leate_Wonceslace,

As a point of unhelpful pedantry: I feel the need to point out that social democracy, while far preferable to liberal democracy, doesn’t actually qualify as socialism since it doesn’t guarantee workers control over the means of production.

But also, that’s far less important than recognizing that Stalinism is fundamentally awful so you’re doing far better than anyone on Hexbear.

Edit: to Hexbear people, don’t reply. I don’t care about your opinion about anything. If anyone posts a Tankie meme at me I’m reporting you for harassment.
