I started getting the dreaded anti-adblock pop-ups on Youtube when they started ramping up their efforts a month or so back, and I initially went through the whole rigamarole: First it was just the pop-up, then it was the pop-up with the timer, then the 3-video countdown finally leading to the video player being disabled...
I have a Firefox extension for creating PWAs (Progressive Web App), and had a profile setup for Youtube. The adblocker detected popup just appeared a couple weeks ago. So i just deleted the YouTube PWA profile, recreated it, and added Ublock back. Havent seen the popup or ads since.
So I was watching a few youtubes and remembered how the vast majority (of like the ten) nes games me and my sister had were hard as all hell. I loved to play Little Nemo and Street Fighter 2010 but I am pretty sure I never made it past the third level of either. Let alone infamously hard games like The Lion King....
Absolutely fell in love with the gun play (leaning in that game is my favorite mechanic in any game), destructible environments, operator gadget interactions, and repelling.
However, I was trash at the game because of slow reflexes due to bad eyesight, and poor aim. Relied on the gadgets while my team got the kills.
But, I don’t think I’d use it enough to warrent paying on it monthly. I did however find an app called Audire that is open-source, uses the API of Shazam, and is also free. Works very well.
I don’t care for Facebook one bit… but it’s alarming to see ANOTHER platform trying to block adblockers. First YouTube, then APKMirror, and now Facebook. Great… can’t wait to enter the adblocker blocking web era. Fucking Google, always making shit worse.
My sister is 23 and still dresses up and goes out knocking doors for candy… and I find it weird but I let her do her. It got me thinking, at what age do you think someone should stop Trick r Treating at? Just curious.
I’ve watched from their driveway and they usually have a look of debate on their faces as to if they want to give her candy or not. They usually just give her a piece though.
They aren’t trying right now because they’re running tests. I’m assuming they’re testing what does and doesn’t work. They probably wanted us to find workarounds so they could patch them when they decide to actually roll out the anti-adblock feature.
I have been reading up on Chrome’s new Topics API and FLoC. Can someone explain to me why it is bad? Do the negatives of FLoC also apply to Federated Learning? (I’m not saying that FLoC is good, I’m just confused.)
Yep, that’s all companies mill you these days. Do something stupid to piss off your user base, and then instead of fix it for free… sell the solution. Then they wonder why stock prices drop, and people move to other competing services.
I don’t know know if you guys are aware, but a user named timvisee on Github forked Mozilla Send and brought back the service. He even hosts an instance himself, and provides the instructions on how to set it up yourself. Would be cool to see Mozilla bring it back offically in some form though.
if they outright forced us to stop day one there’d be outrage, so they instead ease us in. first a popup, then a timed popup, slowly leading to their actual goal but without the risk of an initial outrage. i know this is an extreme comparison but we’re like lambs to a slaughter
I started getting the popups recently. Tried blocking the elements with uBlock, but in turn it would pause the video 2 seconds in. Pretty annoying. So I said screw it and installed an extension that would redirect the youtube watch page to an Invidious instance. Might as well make the transition now before they completely block adblockers for good. Screw Google!
Whatever BS Google is doing to their apps and webpages at the moment. I swear, they are constantly changing and degrading their UIs. Pretty annoying to see the app has a new and more garbage UI then it had yesterday or the last time I opened the app.
Because it’s one of the only remaining browsers (the other one being Safari) that doesn’t run on Chromium. We must protect FireFox and Safari with our lives because if they die out then Google has a monopoly on the browser space. Not something anyone wants… I mean look at their Manifest V3, and web DRM controversies. They are trying to ruin the web. Don’t let them people!
Plus, I just like the ability to customize the toolbar, and FireFox Sync is just brilliant for syncing between mobile and desktop!
Damn, I didn’t even think about running Discord in a separate FF instance like that. Been looking for a more privacy focused approach then installing from the .deb. Thanks man!
Everyone seems to forget one aspect… Google is constantly eating up your data, selling it to advertising companies and the what not. Now, last time I checked, Google owned YouTube. So, in my personal opinion, Google can have my data in exchange for no ads. Don’t get me wrong, i’ll still support my favorite creators through Patreon and all that… but screw google. I’m not buying premium when I’m forced to because of their greed.
Yeah, sure. Next you’re going to tell me all the countries in the world have settled their differences and the world is at peace. Bullshit bud, they without a doubt sell your personal info. “If a product is free, you’re the product”.
There are a lot of GOP-controller legislatures in the USA pushing through so-called “child protection” laws, but there’s a toll in the form of impacting people’s rights and data privacy. Most of these bills involve requiring adults to upload a copy of their photo ID.
My state actually blocked all porn sites. In theory this is a good thing… however it’s pretty easy to bypass with a VPN. If someone wants to get access to porn there are about a million different ways of doing so.
I dreamt that I was sitting in a Taco Bell drinking down cups and cups of Mtn Dew Baja Blast. I eventually decided it was time to go home so I started walking. Mind you it was the middle of the night.
As I walked home I started to get paranoid someone was following me. As I got closer to my house I remember checking my phone and getting depressed because none of my family members tried to contact me to see where I was so late into the night.
Walked in the house and my dad was at the top of the stairs (we have a very good relationship so I was happy to see him), he didn’t say anything to me, turned around and went into the kitchen, and I started tearing up. Woke up and was depressed for a few hours afterwords. :(
I have recently jumped head first into the Linux space. I’ve installed Arch on my daily driver and I’ve become overwhelmed/overjoyed with my options. I’d like to hear from the community about your Linux favorites....
I personally use Tilda… because it allows me to drop it down using just the ` key, and the background transparency actually works (unlike Yakuake) on my distro.
For example, when I advocate about privacy and data gathering from big tech companies, one of the most common I heard is “I don’ care, I have nothing to hide”. What else have you heard?
Yeah, ain’t this the truth. Firefox and safari are the only browsers that arent chromium based. We must protect Firefox at all coats! Without it, Google would have a monopoly on the browser space… a world I would not like to live in.

Ublock users who got hit by Youtube's anti-adblock effort- how's your experience been?

I don’t really use facebook anymore so couldn’t care less; but so happened to log in today to change my password and saw this on my front page.
In your opinion, what's the age limit for Trick r Treating?

what youtube is doing is a slow easing of removing adblockers rather than an immediate one

What less popular text editors do you like or should have a shout out more often? What stuff do you do with it?
What UI design trend do you hate the most?
I personally hate rounded corners and shadows added everywhere. Makes most things look crappy and smudged.
