ImplyingImplications,

Huh TIL. I knew jaywalking was created by the auto industry but had no idea “jay” was a slur at the time.

ImplyingImplications,

This. Money and possessions can be replaced. Nobody’s life is worth what’s in a cash register.

ImplyingImplications,

Dear user, you’ve attempted to use sudo yet your name isn’t in the sudoers file. Curious.

Do you think we will ever have affordable housing again in our lifetime?

Considering how crazy expensive accommodations have become the last couple of years, concentrated in the hands of greedy corporations, landlords and how little politicians seem to care about this problem, do you think we will ever experience a real estate market crash that would bring those exorbitant prices back to Earth?

ImplyingImplications,

This is the biggest issue right here. Houses weren’t always investments and making them investments was a terrible idea that’s now difficult to fix.

Real estate has become a huge part of stock market and GDP figures. People’s retirement funds have become other people’s mortgage and rent payments. Affordable houses for some would mean economic decline for others, and no political party wants to create economic decline.

ImplyingImplications,

If Americans actually voted this wouldn’t be an issue. The problem is the only people who actually vote at every chance they get are these types.

ImplyingImplications,

Pretty much what the publisher’s response was lol

ImplyingImplications,

They’re banning plastic straws. Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? Yeah the government man went down to the factory where they’re made and told them to stop. He said “that’s the last straw”.

ImplyingImplications,

Funny but English as a Lingua Franca is a thing. English has become a widely understood international language so its not just used to talk to native English speakers but also as a common language between non-native speakers.

ImplyingImplications,

As others have pointed out, individuals are not the problem nor are they the solution. How we produce energy and manufacture goods are the issue. The corporations producing energy and manufacturing goods don’t want to change to sustainable alternatives because it will cost them money. So they’ve invented the idea of a carbon footprint to make it seem like it’s your desire for electricity that is the problem and not how they generate it.

ImplyingImplications,

Governments plan for all kinds of events if there’s even a small chance it could happen. It doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

ImplyingImplications,

Doesn’t really sound like he’s all that proud of what he’s done.

ImplyingImplications,

Nothing wrong with a little playful fun between friends. I never complain if my bro gives me a headshot.

Do media aggregators have a duty to provide links to public news sources in emergencies? (www.cbc.ca)

The NWT government and city of Yellowknife are describing in tweets, Instagram messages etc. how to search key evacuation information on CPAC and CBC. The broadcast carriers have a duty to carry emergency information, but Meta and X are blocking links....

ImplyingImplications, (edited )

Can the Canadian government please just have an official platform for sharing this kind of information? Why are evacuation notices going on Facebook???

ImplyingImplications,

There’s a neat phenomenon where people born before a life changing technology will never see it as being life changing.

Anyone who grew up before the internet only sees it a some place to chat with friends and not the de facto way international business is now conducted. Anyone who grew up before planes only see them as some way to get to a holiday destination quicker and not as the way a huge amount of cargo shipping is done today.

To these people, going back in time seems simple. They could certainly live without the internet or planes or any other new fangled devices! They might, but society wouldn’t be able to. I can see AI being the new thing that changes society that we all think of as being some silly little toy.

ImplyingImplications,

Trailer Park Boys and Letterkenny are much more accurate depictions of Canadians

ImplyingImplications,

The top cat is a saber-tooth whose population died out entirely because they didn’t do like the house cat’s ancestors did. So who’s laughing now?

ImplyingImplications,

Someone replied to my comment!
Nope! Piped youtube link.

Ancient problems. Modern solutions.

Will electrifying cars and home heating break Canada's grid? (www.cbc.ca)

The government is encouraging Canadians to switch to EVs and heat pumps to fight climate change. But many CBC News readers have asked: won’t electrifying everything break the grid and drive up energy costs? Here’s what electricity operators and those researching the transition say.

ImplyingImplications,

I always wonder what the point of these articles are. If we’re going through the effort of electrifying hundreds of thousands of homes we’re obviously going to upgrade our power grids as well. A switch to renewable energy is going to require almost all of our infrastructure to be replaced.

That comes at a huge cost but the alternative is societal collapse once non-renewable energy runs out. Everyone agrees the switch will need to happen eventually, but lots of people seem to want to pass that responsibility on to the next generation. How long can we do that for?

What a coincidence! About 50% of drug arrests in America are cannabis related: ACLU

ImplyingImplications,

I’ve always used “You don’t need to know how to fly a plane to know when a pilot is bad”. I don’t think the saying you posted is antisemitic though.

ImplyingImplications,

One time in school the teacher actually told us to go on Wikipedia to look something up for a report. I edited the page to change the information to something incorrect. I of course put the correct info on my report. I taught everyone a lesson that day.

ImplyingImplications,

I’m having a hard time.

American when the metric tonne of Reese’s peanutbutter cups, caramel chocolate chip…streusel?, and oreo cookies…falls?

ImplyingImplications,

Also having a mullet is illegal in North Korea for the same reason. That’s not even a joke.

Are there professional high school teams I don’t know about? Or are these laws specifically to keep kids from having fun playing sports with zero stakes?

ImplyingImplications,

the millions of girls who would be impacted by the decision.

I honestly don’t think there are that many trans people. Most of these states likely don’t even have a single trans highschool student in the entire state. Trans people are a minority of a minority. I feel like it should almost be a case by case basis.

ImplyingImplications,

How can she double-down so many times?? Any normal person would have broke by now!

Mega Karen: Nanomachines, son!

ImplyingImplications,

Yes economics is the study of how people determine what is valuable and how valuable things are divided. People are complex and irrational so it’s difficult to come up with a simple explanation of economic trends.

I’m struggling to find the charts but yes, frequency of illnesses caused by bacteria and viruses is high in children and seniors and low in adults (unless the adult is often around a child or senior). It’s because the immune system is strongest in adults and weakest in the very young and very old.

If you don’t hang around kids or seniors, you’ll rarely ever get sick.

The wedding photographer we used still uses our shots in promotional materials. I’m flattered! But the marriage ended just months after those pictures were taken because I found out she was having an affair.

ImplyingImplications,

Yes, as far as I’m aware that’s pretty standard practice. We signed a contract essentially saying the photographer owned all rights to the photos and could use them however they wanted forever. We were simply going to be given a copy which we couldn’t use for anything other than personal reasons.

ImplyingImplications,

Just in case anyone is actually wondering “abad” = land

ImplyingImplications,

You’re thinking of Mecca

ImplyingImplications,

Yes. The terms used by political parties and in common discourse rarely match their actual definitions.

Progressive means the person is open to changing rules.

Conservative means the person isn’t open to changing rules.

Liberal means the person’s main concern is providing rights/liberties to everyone.

Reactionary is rarely used but should be. It means someone who wants to go backwards because they believe recent changes have caused a bad outcome. I’d say most people calling themselves conservative today are actually reactionary. They don’t want status quo, they believe things were better back in the day and want rules to go back to that time.

There is a huge debate in South Korea over feminism. I’m not Korean, but I’ve read a lot that Korean men do get special treatment from the government, colleges, and workplaces, but mostly for their mandatory military service. The argument seems to be that if women want the same treatment, they’re free to sign up for military service.
