Conceptual slippery slope arguments assume that because we cannot draw a distinction between adjacent stages, we cannot draw a distinction between any stages at all.
Example: "There is no essential difference between 199 and 200 grains of sand or 200 and 201 grains and so on. Thus, there is no difference between 1 grain of sand and 3 billion grains of sand.”
A quote that always stuck with me was: “‘Your ad here’ signs are proof that the ad spot doesn’t work well, otherwise someone would have put their ad there.”

Protests on the social platform have entered a new phase, with users shirking the platform’s NSFW content rules en masse. The development has some media buyers on high alert, experts say.
“My number one concern right now as an advertiser would be that Reddit seems to be losing rapport with and control over their users. Reddit needs to talk to their community members now and work to regain their trust and support or risk losing brand advertisers long term.”
We’ll see. The article also notes that no company has pulled their ads from Reddit yet and even says that compared to some other sites, Reddit isn’t doing so bad (I’m assuming they’re implying Twitter’s refusal to remove hate speech).
The original owner of 4chan left after leaked celebrity nudes were posted on the site. The owner faced gigantic lawsuits over it and ultimately decided owning the site was too much legal hassle.
So maybe posting nudes of Jennifer Lawrence to Reddit’s front page would do them in too?
Hey all, I recently left reddit like many of you. I have a question regarding lemmy and the fediverse on the history of banning and defederation. Streamers want that corporate money. They know what they’re getting into. They know their end game is signing a lucrative sponsorship contract once they get big enough.
I’m just curious for the new or existing people? Lemmy.ml has taken a hard turn to the right since the reddit exodus. There’s been a lot of pro-imperialist propaganda being posted on world news, and a lot less diversity of opinion. It feels more neoliberal and neo-con to me....
I think every person should have food, water, and shelter at the very least. Nobody should need to do anything for these basic necessities of life.
I always thought this was a common thought but no, this apparently is a far left radical ideology. People should starve on the street unless they provide value to a capitalist is actually the common thought.

The judge presiding over the case is Aileen Cannon, who has previously ruled in Trump’s favour on this case by putting an injunction on the investigation. Her ruling was baseless and the appeals court ripped her to shreds over it.
She could throw out the case or sentence Trump to probation (even if the “suggested” sentence is 15 years) or do all kinds of things that an appeals court could do little about. For an appeals court to overturn a ruling they have to find a procedural or legal error. A judge can do a lot of questionable stuff without making any legal errors.
A previously unnoticed change in Donald Trump’s online fund-raising appeals allows him to divert a sizable chunk of his 2024 contributions to a group that has spent millions to cover his legal fees....

Scientists failed for decades to communicate the coming risks of rapid sea-level rise to policymakers and the public.
Have they? Or have the marketing and PR departments of oil and gas companies paid for endless propaganda and lobbying to prevent change?
Did scientists fail to communicate the link between cigarettes and lung cancer or was it the propaganda and lobbying of tobacco companies that convinced the government to not do anything about it for decades?
What’s the best way to respond to this kind of brazen cruelty?
Voting is a must. Political apathy is how this stuff happens. Outside of voting, just being vocal about your distaste for these policies might help let people around you know that not everyone supports this. And if you come face to face with someone who is outspoken in their belief that some children deserve to starve, then you know who to avoid being around.

where just being involved might put you in jail like many of the lawyers who came before you
Just to clarify, his previous lawyers went to jail for lying to courts on behalf of Trump or providing Trump with advice on how to get away with crimes. Defending Trump doesn’t automatically get you in trouble.
And the app is literally just a browser that opens up the mobile site. Oh and it needs access to your contacts, messages, camera, microphone, pictures, files, and call logs!
At least with the way Lemmy is designed it doesn’t seem like even the main devs can have much of an impact.
They even write themselves that if they made changes to the Lemmy codebase that some instance admins didn’t like, then those admins can decide not to upgrade their instance. The code is also open sourced so anyone with some tech know-how can fork the codebase and remove whatever they don’t like.
