If I felt like I was forming a “friendship” with one of these artificial personalities, I’d want more control - not in a maniacal way, but because I wouldn’t trust Meta (or whoever) not to say “meh, this isn’t profitable, so we’re shutting it down next month.”
We’re already far too dependent on corporations, but in most cases, they haven’t had the power to emotionally damage us in this specific way. I don’t want to give them that kind of power over me.
Years back, it was more simple. Food, shelter, and water. But now, as technology, advances and people get stressed out more and more from life getting too complicated, needing manuals for almost everything. What do you guys think the bear necessities are now?...
The “classics”, but with the stipulation that they not be poisoned, polluted, toxic, or otherwise unsafe to be near, contact, or consume. That used to be implied, but in today’s world, you have to be specific.
Telephone usage. Everyone assumes that everyone else knows how to use a phone. Even before kids are old enough to use a phone themselves, parents make their children memorize an important number.
“Reliable transportation”. That can mean public transportation or a bike in addition to a car. Transportation is a requirement for virtually every job.
Basic computer literacy. The bare essentials of computer usage are expected of just about everyone, even if you only know how to log on to Facebook, which brings me to the next subject…
Internet access. It’s gotten to the point that people assume you are homeless, stupid, or in a weird cult if you can’t/won’t get on the internet.
Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Elon Musk is under fire after publicly backing a far-right political party in Germany, suggesting the current government should not be re-elected over its position on the current migrant crisis in Europe.
I don’t think I want to let him off the hook with a metal disorder.
I won’t accept that he’s a sociopath until there’s an official diagnosis. Sociopaths deserve empathy and need treatment. Musk is just a reprehensible asshole.
(By the way @Hyperreality, I’m not arguing with you. I’m taking the word “sociopath” more literally than you intended. I know what you mean, and agree.)
Thank you. This is the first seriously negative thing I’ve heard about her, and I’d like to give her the benefit of the doubt. A person can grow and change quite a bit in ten years.
Assuming what you say is true, I’d like to see reddit pay major, highly publicized consequences for this. I don’t expect it to actually happen, though. I hope I’m wrong.
Elon lied about the monkeys — and he shouldn't be trusted to put his Neuralink chips in human brains.
"They are claiming they are going to put a safe device on the market, and that's why you should invest," Ryan Merkley at the Physicians Committee, told Wired. "And we see his lie as a way to whitewash what happened in these exploratory studies."
Really heartbreaking reading what happened to the monkeys.
People quite rightly think of Elizabeth Holmes as a fraud for making false medical claims about what the Theranos machines could do. So why aren't Elon's claims at Neuralink being held to the same level of scrutiny?
I can imagine being desperate to hit it big, but at least but a lottery ticket or something. That way, the school system (or whatever) gets a few bucks, instead of the fucking Trumps.
As far as I’m concerned, the presence of commercial “breaks” makes a movie unwatchable. A good writer, director, or editor carefully manages things like pace, timing, and emotional impact. Interrupting that with an ad for car insurance completely destroys the mood, and cheapens the entire experience. I don’t care if commercials are “limited”. They shouldn’t be there at all.
I only tolerate commercials if I’ve already seen a movie a million times, and I’m only half paying attention anyway.
I take the bus about 8 times a week to go see family and the bus i go on goes through some villages and towns, with many cars being impatient and taking the piss with a double decker bus. These bus drivers are pretty calm and just take it because they know if they didn’t, they’d be fired....
Most of what happens in the world would happen regardless of whether I existed or not, so even while I’m alive, the impact of my existence is negligible. I don’t believe in an afterlife, so I won’t know or care when I’m gone, either. It seems futile to waste any of my short life worrying about the inevitable.
Not good. Cultish behavior is for extremists. When you lose the ability to laugh at yourself, it’s a sign that you’ve lot the ability to criticize and evaluate yourself honestly.
No, it’s far from great, but it’s better than allowing shenanigans like this to become the norm - and they will become the norm unless Unity pays severely.
Petty tyrants whose real life is so sad and irrelevant that they abuse the tiny bit of power they have in order to feel important. In the process, they make the decent mods look like pricks by association.
My background is in telecommunications (the technical side of video production), so I know that 30fps is (or was?) considered the standard for a lot of video. TV and movies don’t seem choppy when I watch them, so why does doubling the frame rate seem to matter so much when it comes to games? Reviewers mention it constantly,...
I’ve gotten a lot of helpful answers, but yours was the only one that included a visual aid! Thanks!
What’s interesting is that when I focused on the UFOs, I didn’t notice a difference between the 30 fps and the 60 fps stars. When I let my eyes go out of focus, though, I was able to see a clear difference between them.
A problem I often have is finding something good enough to kinda watch, but not SO good that I feel like I’m missing something if I screw around with my tablet while it’s on.

Democracy remains popular across the world, but faced with a global array of challenges from inequality to the climate crisis, young people are far less likely than their elders to believe it can deliver on what concerns them....
Conservatives can openly break the law, and laugh while doing so. Liberals too often lack the spine to make them pay serious consequences, or any consequences at all. I can’t blame people for losing faith in democracy when it’s disintegrating before our eyes.
Whenever anyone reading this feels stupid or embarrassed, just remember the “protesters” standing out in the cold in support of Apple. It will make you feel better.
Back in high school, I worked with a girl who would simply not do her job. She’d walk away from her cash register at will. She’d go on break without telling anyone (never mind asking, like she was supposed to), and wouldn’t answer her radio, so people were constantly asking where she was. She wouldn’t follow instructions from anyone except the general manager - as if she outranked everyone else (which, of course, she didn’t). Everyone who actually had to work with her couldn’t stand her. From her perspective, though, she was always the victim. Nothing was ever her fault.
She would also talk your ear off. It was impossible to work with her and not hear several stupid, irrelevant, boring stories every hour. Fortunately, I didn’t have to work full shifts with her very often. If I had, I probably would have quit long before I had to leave for college.
I strongly suspect that the main reason she wasn’t fired is because it had taken months to fill her position, and filling it again would take months more. Plus, she only annoyed management; she didn’t completely exasperate them like she did the rest of us.
Wow. It’s been years. I’m surprised I still remember this so clearly.
What UI design trend do you hate the most?
I personally hate rounded corners and shadows added everywhere. Makes most things look crappy and smudged.
