How a Big Pharma Company Stalled a Potentially Lifesaving Vaccine in Pursuit of Bigger Profits (www.propublica.org)

A vaccine against tuberculosis, the world’s deadliest infectious disease, has never been closer to reality, with the potential to save millions of lives. But its development slowed after its corporate owner focused on more profitable vaccines....

Fedizen,

this is a textbook example of why unrestrained capitalism doesnt work. You either need to hand everyone money or purposefully manipulate the financial incentives. Otherwise you get the basic “do you rich people want this?” distortion and we’re increasingly seeing how badly this distortion affects supplies of food, housing, etc.

Fedizen,

time slots in tv were a blessing in disguise because it made the choice “what should I run in this time slot” rather than “should I run this show”.

This now leads to shows getting axed when in the past they be moved to a different time slot or would be left alone until they found something better.

Fedizen,

Fedizen,

It might be this has always been the case

Fedizen,

even the the most generous and trusting reading of this would suggest that the US just selling unhinged people guns is possibly something that could be chalked up the cause of this murder. Permissive gun policies in this country and multiple court rulings that police don’t have to take protective measures seriously have degraded people’s ability to have control over their lives.

Even if there was no intent here, this “random act of violence” is the result of generations of failed policies.

‘Get Help’ – Elon Musk Blasted for Mocking Ukraine With Fake Zelensky Picture (www.kyivpost.com)

‘Get Help’ – Elon Musk Blasted for Mocking Ukraine With Fake Zelensky Picture The world’s richest man has continued his campaign against Kyiv, this time by using a fake picture of President Zelensky to mock Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s full-scale invasion....

Fedizen,

killing his shot at president in one veto.

Fedizen,

that makes no sense. Taking some risk out of striking makes it harder to dismiss the threat of a strike which increases the incentive businesses have to improve contracts. Its clear that the profits these businesses are making aren’t getting back to workers so more threats from unions makes the economy more stable.

Fedizen,

There should also be taxes on rental properties beyond the first to prevent the “hoard and rent” cycle

Fedizen,

huh, I guess small changes can improve society

Fedizen,

it reall ought to be illegal to not be able to cancel a service on the same interface and ease at which its joined.

Fedizen,

compared to a 5 lane highway its a pittance - theres a reason why private rail companies can exist but private road companies largely don’t.

The problem is there’s a lot more federal funding for the shittier solution so when budgetting are you going to build the thing the feds will pay 100% or 0%?

Fedizen,

How many private road networks exist in the US?

The problem is a lot of the costs of highways are externalized: cars are more expensive to run than trains, parking is more space costly, roads require dedicating much larger amounts of space for lower capacity. The reality is car roads cost more but are subsidized more.

Fedizen,

thats the thing though, a rail line can pay for itself, a road often can’t. Its easy to “create a new branch road” but when you add in all the externalized maintenance factors: policing traffic, emergencies, fueling stations, stormwater management, the costs per user, the costs per user per mile traveled, land use requirements per user (4 parking stalls per vehicle, multiple vehicles per person) etc.

They often cannot pay for themselves, hence why the subsidies are necessary and why things like big box stores with huge parking lots are a net drain on most communities (its not just the low wages)

If they could pay for themselves we’d see more companies that just build and rent private roads like train companies do.

Fedizen,

Maybe consider different framing: If 50 years ago we had budgeted as much public money on public railroads as roads, we’d be in a much better position today and its even more likely this trend will continue.

The trial for kids without teeth looks interesting. The pathways for adult teeth (re)growth will probably require more than just one drug in humans.

I feel like we're all stuck in a movie where all the rich people live on some kind of floating island or satellite with everything they need to live well, and all of us have zero chance of going there

I have seen a few of these with similar story lines and realized we are living it right now. They have the best healthcare, the best food, the best everything and most of us are a few dollars from disaster. That scares some of us to death literally from all the stress it causes.

Fedizen,

Well on the plus side cardboard drones laden with explosives are cheaper than ever. /s

Fedizen,

US gov: Spend 10 trillion dollars on the world’s biggest military operation to prevent retaliatory attacks caused by 3 trillion in oil investments after an attack kills 3k people in NY.

Also US Gov.: Spend 2 trillion to fighting a disease that kills millions of people, give up after 2 years. Most the money actually went to business bailouts.

Fedizen,

they don’t make anything else.

Fedizen,

I just don’t understand why the tariff applies to foreign cars that don’t compete directly with US cars in terms of form factor

Fedizen,

This just needs Hunter Biden diving in front of the guy with the gun, returning fire.

Fedizen,

Information in general makes people more depressed.

Fedizen,

Well its great until you get to the habitat sections and find out their populations have nose dived in the last 50 years.

Fedizen,

This is a good policy, there will be some people that be like “oh you’re rich, drive whatever” but the reality is this affects the automaker’s calculus so those heavy cars will be rebranded as luxury and smaller consumer cars will get more production. This is better for road maintenance, safety, etc.

Fedizen,

Well they’re managing to keep people with mortages out of the market, if only they did something to prevent corporations from buying houses with cash

President Joe Biden will announce the creation of the first-ever federal office of gun violence prevention on Friday, fulfilling a key demand of gun safety activists as legislation remains stalled in Congress, according to two people with direct knowledge of the White House’s plans....

Fedizen,

Except you get abortions at the recommendation of a medical professional, who is recommending guns and for what?

Fedizen,

I think you’re missing the point: the analogy of medical to commodity doesn’t work at all because medical decisions have built in gatekeepers

I would be all for a law where in order to buy a new gun you had to sit down with somebody who asked you why you wanted to have a gun and even just like handed you a pamplet with statistical gun ownership risks. That’s literally a wing of gun control legislation: background checks, licensing, mental health screening, etc would be the analog of the doctor, referal, etc in the comparison, but it doesn’t exist.

But post 1980s NRA interepretation of the 2nd amendment in the US is as a right to purchase them as a commodity. Abortion is a wholly different thing where a medical professional guides somebody through a process with risks that must be stated and evaluated.

Comparing a commodity model to a medical process just undermines whatever point you think you’re trying to make.

Fedizen,

An office of prayers is strictly forbidden by the first amendment.
