Earthwormjim91,

Because the 12 and 13 minis didn’t sell for shit. That’s why.

There’s no point in keeping around a product line that nobody is buying.

Earthwormjim91,

She doesn’t have a daughter though?

Earthwormjim91,

I regularly get 24+ hours on my S8, including using the sleep tracking and a 45 minute workout every day.

Earthwormjim91,

Anyone could randomly die, yes.

Knowing for a fact that the person you love will inevitably die while you will live forever is another story.

Plenty of people still get dogs knowing that the dog will die long before them. Many of those people never get another pet because of the pain from losing the one they loved. It’s like that but on an eternal scale.

Earthwormjim91,

A little late to the party. Apple already announced a patch for them.

[Rumor] Apple To Issue New Software Update For iPhone 12 To Bring Its Radiation Down To Acceptable Levels (wccftech.com)

To prevent the iPhone 12 from being banned in France, Apple is reportedly working to release a software update that is said to bring down the radiation levels to accommodate the request of French regulators. Before being officially released back in 2020, it was reported that Apple knew about this problem and instructed its...

Earthwormjim91,

Probably going to throttle it a bit. The only issue is that the power level of the radios in the phone make it a little too warm when you have it to your face.

Earthwormjim91,

Yeah I was refreshing the website and the app and the Apple Store wouldn’t load on either for me until 18 after.

Got my order in as soon as the store came up for me and got October 2-4 lol

Earthwormjim91,

Did you order a pro max. I heard that initially they were going to delay it a week or so due to production delays, but then kept the same launch date.

I got in as soon as the pre order went live and got Oct 2-4 for mine. I wonder if they did a soft delay or something.

Earthwormjim91,

It’s actually the dominant gene. Having 5 is recessive.

Earthwormjim91,

The action button was never to lunch Siri. Holding the side button already does that.

This one was always designed to be programmable and by default does the same thing as the current mute switch.

Earthwormjim91,

No more mute switch no. Now it’s a button that you can program to do pretty much anything.

The default is still toggle silent mode though like the switch.

Earthwormjim91,

Yeah I will miss it.

When mine gets here I’ll have to play around with it but from what I’ve seen you can only program it to do one thing at a time, which is a bummer.

It would be nice if they went with like a single tap to toggle mute, and a long press to do your programmed action.

Earthwormjim91,

You say this after they change it to rounded corners? lol.

You’re about 3 years late in this one

Earthwormjim91,

Are you talking about the face of it or the edges?

The edges are rounded

Earthwormjim91,

Then buy something with a round edge then? Idk what to tell you lol. Personally I think the round edges look like shit

Earthwormjim91,

I mean, you’re wrong so you’re definitely in the right sub

Earthwormjim91,

Apple hasn’t sold them in a few years anyway. It would only affect third party sellers.

Earthwormjim91,

The non pro phones don’t have the RAW photo and video that the pro phones do.

RAW takes up a massive amount more space per photo and video than normal compressed images.

Also, I don’t know anyone with an iPhone that doesn’t just automatically back their photos up to iCloud anyway, meaning that all of their non RAW photos and videos are constantly transferred throughout the day to iCloud. The only people I do know that transfer things over cable are the ones that actually use the ProRes and ProRAW photos and video.

Earthwormjim91,

It will likely come to the non pro here in a couple of years at most.

The iPads that have thunderbolt and usb3 use a separate physical usb controller for those speeds. The iPhone doesn’t have the space for that so they handle on the chip itself.

The non pro 15 is using the A16 from last year’s pro model that only supports usb 2. The pro this year has the A17 pro chip that supports it.

I suspect that next year when we get the rumored “ultra” iPhone, it will have an even beefier A18 Pro chip that will support thunderbolt 4 like the iPad Pro does with 40 gig, and the non pro iPhone will get the A17 which will handle base usb3 speed like the iPad Air does.

Earthwormjim91,

Shit, the only place I even plug my phone into now is my car because I was too dumb to wait a few months for the refresh that came with wireless CarPlay.

I use MagSafe at home for all of my charging, and airdrop/airplay for pretty much everything else that isn’t synced to iCloud.

Earthwormjim91,

They didn’t downgrade anything…

iPhones have the USB controller as part of the SoC. Not a separate controller like the iPads or laptops. They don’t have the space for it.

The non pro this year is using last years pro chip which didn’t have a USB 3 controller on it. For the non pro they are repinning the port to USB c to repurpose the controller on the chip. But they physically cant add USB 3 to it.

They also never removed cameras from the non pro model either. Idk where you pulled that from. The XS and XS Max both only had two cameras, and when they went to the iPhone/iPhone Pro model with the 11, the non pro still had two and they added a third for the pro.

Earthwormjim91,

I’ve thought about it. I haven’t decided how long I’m keeping this car though. The practical mind in me says keep it until the wheels fall off.

The enthusiast in me really wants a dark horse Mustang though lol.

Earthwormjim91,

And wired CarPlay works for me. Wireless would be nice but it’s not a necessity for me, especially given that that dongle would be useless to me if I do change cars here soon anyway.

I’ve looked around at the wireless CarPlay adapters, the consensus seems to be that to get one without any significant latency and operates as close to native wireless CarPlay, it’s gonna be in the $1-200 range too. That’s a decent amount for something I might only use for a few months.

Earthwormjim91,

Have you met the people? They’re stupid as fuck.

They only care about how cheap their bills are. You’ll hear everyone say that they care about the environment, but once they know that in the short term it will mean higher electric bills they will vote against it.

Earthwormjim91,

Sure. All EM waves are radiation, including visible light.

Non ionizing radiation isn’t an issue though so nobody uses “radiation” for it. When you say “radiation” that’s pretty much always talking about ionizing radiation from radioactive sources.

The iPhone does not emit any ionizing radiation.

Earthwormjim91,

Yeah that’s exactly what it is and why it’s cheap. They have a bunch of leftover or recycled chassis that they can shove new guts into and sell for cheaper.

Earthwormjim91,

Way more than a few cents. The iPhones don’t use a separate physical usb controller due to lack of space. It’s handled on the chip.

The non pro this year is using last years pro chip which doesn’t have the capability for usb3.

To bring usb3 to the non pro they would have had to put the A17 in it, which is limited due to TSMCs production for the 3nm chips. They would have had to both reduce the number of pro models for sale (which they would never do), and raise the price of the non pro which would have just pushed people up to the pro model which would be limited in stock already because of splitting the chip between the two models.

It’s not as easy as just adding a different controller.

Earthwormjim91,

My guess is one of two things they’ll do since thunderbolt 5 was announced a couple of days ago too.

They’ll either put thunderbolt 4 on the pros next year with 40 gig like the iPad Pro has, and regular usb 3.2 gen 2 like the iPad Air does, with the rumored SE getting usbc with an A16 chip and usb 2 like the base iPad.

Or, they’ll go with a four tier model and introduce the long rumored ultra with thunderbolt 5 and 80gig speed, the pro getting thunderbolt 4, the regular getting usb 3 gen 2, and the SE keeping usb 2.

The spring event when they announce the M3 Macs will probably give a clue to it.

Earthwormjim91,

There’s a reason why none of those crazy styles stuck around.

They all sucked pretty hard or were too niche to become popular enough for economy of scale to bring the price down.

Earthwormjim91,

Well no, they could hold a cloture vote any time on every nominee. They need 67 senators to vote to end the filibuster.

They haven’t forced cloture because enough republicans support him in the background and wouldn’t vote for it.

Earthwormjim91,

What else do you do with violent teenagers that commit robberies and other violent crimes?

All of the teens at Angola were moved there after they committed more violent incidents in other juvenile centers or escaped.

Earthwormjim91,

So again, what do you do with them when they have committed further violent attacks against other teens that are trying to get better?

I’m not defending the conditions, but saying stupid shit like “wHy ArE kIdS iN pRiSoN aNyWaY” is dumb. Because they committed violent crimes. That’s why.

Earthwormjim91,

All of them WERE in juvenile detention already. They were moved out after committing further violent acts against other juveniles.

So again, what do you do with violent teenagers that have already had a chance in a normal juvenile detention center and committed further violent crimes while there?

Earthwormjim91,

No I read other articles about it. Including one from last year when they were first moved out of juvvie.

Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, announced the decision to move the teens to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola on July 19 after a series of chaotic fights, injuries and breakouts from the Bridge City Center for Youth near New Orleans, including an alleged carjacking by an escaped teen during which a man was shot. Residents in the surrounding community say they’re living in fear and have called for the facility to be shut down.

These are extremely violent teens committing serious violent crimes. After already being in juvvie.

So again, what do you do with extremely violent criminals that break out of juvenile facilities and commit attempted murder and carjacking while they’re on the escape?

You move the violent ones to a facility that can handle violent criminals and keep the ones that want to rehabilitate in a normal juvenile facility.

Earthwormjim91,

nbcnews.com/…/louisiana-sending-youth-angola-pris…

Following a slew of alarming headlines about violence, mismanagement and frequent escapes from Louisiana’s juvenile lockups, the state’s governor offered a new solution last week: temporarily moving teens to the notorious Angola prison for adults.

At a news conference, Edwards stressed that the Angola move is temporary, aimed at reducing the population at the troubled Bridge City until more secure youth facilities can be built or renovated. The state has too many teens in its care to consider closing Bridge City entirely, he said.

It was roughly 25 kids in juvenile detention already that were too violent for the facility they were in, including breaking out and shooting someone.

Earthwormjim91,

Yeah Louisiana is a shithole in a lot of regards. Their prisons are god awful third world hell holes.

I’m absolutely not defending how prisoners, teens or adults, are treated there. It’s abhorrent and the Feds should step in and put some heads on pikes over it.

I’m just saying the article is using “children” pretty loosely here to put an image in your head. These aren’t innocent scared little kids. These are teenagers that have committed very violent crimes including attempted murder.

Earthwormjim91,

Micro usb fucking sucked. Being a standard doesn’t mean shit when the standard is shit.

Earthwormjim91,

Other than, you know, the connector. The thing most people care about. Most USB-C cables today are usb 2.0 still anyway so they have the same spec as Lightning.

Micro usb was non reversible, the little pins broke all the fuckin time so the cable wouldn’t stay in the port, and the connector would damage the port itself so you’d just be fucked.

Lightning was miles ahead of that. It was reversible so it literally didn’t matter how you put it in. There were no fragile little pins to hold it in so it lasted a lot longer, and since the internal pins in the port were all on the sides of the port it was a lot harder to damage the port itself. If the cable got damaged you could just replace it without worrying about the port.

Lightning was better than micro and mini usb in pretty much every way.

Earthwormjim91,

You’re the first person I’ve ever heard defend micro usb lol. So congratulations there.

Yes Apple branded lightning cables break pretty easily. Not the fucking port in the phone though. Way to ignore that.

“Android” isn’t a single maker. Sure galaxies and pixels are USB3.0 or 3.1. The vast majority of cheapo Android phones use 2.0.

Earthwormjim91,

You do know that the connector is separate from the protocol right?

The galaxy S23 ultra comes with a usb 2.0 type c cable in the box.

If you want a 3.2 cable with 45W charging you have to buy it separately.

Earthwormjim91,

I’ve been using the same lightning cable that I got with my iPhone 12. What the fuck do y’all do with your cables?

Earthwormjim91,

This is true lol.

Earthwormjim91,

BMW didn’t give a single fuck about some autistic teenagers online making memes. They cared about actual customers not buying BMWs over it.

Earthwormjim91,

How does that blow your mind?

Capturing emissions and recirculating them back through the engine to reburn them is inherently less efficient for power. It reduces the amount of emissions at the tailpipe at the expense of power and longevity. The EPA doesn’t give a shit about how much power your car makes, they care about the sulphur and NOx emissions from diesel engines making it into the air.

You can make a more fuel efficient and powerful diesel that will go for a couple million miles by straight piping it, but the emissions are god awful.

Earthwormjim91,

Highly doubtful. The people actually in the market for a bmw aren’t spending their time looking at memes.

Earthwormjim91,

They’re only switching to a new port on the iPhone. They e been using usb-c on the brick for years.

Earthwormjim91,

lol yes they can. Your employer can make you use whatever software they want, and can and do monitor everything you do on their network.

There is no expectation of privacy when you’re using their hardware or network.

Earthwormjim91,

If your employer gives you a laptop for work, they can lock it down to whatever the hell they want. Standard practice is to give regular users no elevated privileges at all, so you couldn’t install anything that isn’t already installed. Most companies don’t even let users edit the internet options so you can’t even change your default search engine.
