Earthwormjim91,

Because Reddit was created by two people.

Aaron was not involved in the starting of Reddit whatsoever. He didn’t come on board until Ycombinator basically forced a merge between Reddit and Infogami 6 months after Reddit launched.

And he was fired within a year.

Earthwormjim91,

He also defended child porn and advocated for making it legal.

Maybe don’t idolize people.

Earthwormjim91,

Because the everyday person is an idiot.

Obama expended all his political capital on getting a watered down healthcare expansion passed and republicans took Congress for almost a decade because of it.

Biden starts cleaning up the absolute mess that Trump left and starts taking care of people to alleviate effects of the pandemic, and republicans take the House preventing pretty much anything else from being done.

As soon as any minor good starts being done people scream about taxes and elect republicans.

Earthwormjim91,

Why would it support a 14 year old OS whose final release was 12 years ago and mainstream support ended 8 years ago?

Brands that don't buy enough Twitter ads will lose verification (www.theverge.com)

Starting August 7th, advertisers that haven’t reached certain spending thresholds will lose their official brand account verification. According to emails obtained by the WSJ, brands need to have spent at least $1,000 on ads within the prior 30 days or $6,000 in the previous 180 days to retain the gold checkmark identifying...

Earthwormjim91,

The constitution never actually defines what natural born is. So it would be entirely up to SCOTUS. The same SCOTUS that currently has several GOP members being openly bribed for decisions. For shockingly lower amounts than you’d expect.

Because these fires are the result of climate change.

Climate change itself is driven by human emissions, which the VAST majority of are driven by the pursuit of profit by corporations, which is entirely a capitalist concept. Corporations could invest money into eliminating emissions, but that would reduce profit, so corporations don’t do it unless they can leverage it as a selling point to increase revenue.

And there are a plethora of ways to generate electricity cleanly. Nuclear, wind, solar, hydro. You know who has lobbied against these heavily? The oil and gas and coal industries, because it would hurt their profits if we used clean energy. Coal and natural gas account for 98% of the emissions from electricity generation in the US.

You know another major contributor to emissions? Transportation. Having efficient mass public transportation would eliminate a huge amount of emissions, and we would have more walkable cities with a healthier population. You know who has lobbied against that for decades? The auto industry because it would hurt profits if people didn’t need to buy a car to get anywhere.

Chevron, BP, Exxon, and Shell make up 10% of carbon emissions just between those four companies. All lobby heavily against green energy and public transportation because it would hurt profits.

Earthwormjim91,

And they have known about oil and gas being major contributors to climate change and the effects of climate change for nearly 100 years. And have lobbied against things that could have eliminated our need for oil and gas by now because it would hurt profits.

How do you not get this. They have known about climate change for decades and actively work to keep harming the climate because of profit.

Earthwormjim91,

Sweet so public beta 2 should be out in a day or two then

Earthwormjim91,

This is about being able to go into an Apple Store and order something from a person and have it delivered.

Previously if you wanted it delivered, you would have to go to the Apple.com store and order it.

Earthwormjim91,

It would have hurt early on, but no so much now. They locked the instance down, quit accepting new users, and banned users being able to create communities themselves stating that the goal of the instance was to be a carefully curated one and they considered it “complete” and no new communities would be created.

They’re not even in the top 15 instances by users anymore.

The biggest impact would be that Lemmy.ml is the developers instance but I imagine they have backups of everything and would just register on a different domain and transfer everything and everyone.

Earthwormjim91,

Definitely don’t go all in at once if you’re not even sure you need the things.

I have an iPhone, watch, MacBook, and AppleTV4k. My wife has a phone, watch, and iPad.

I picked them up one by one as I thought they would be beneficial. I switched from a pixel to an iPhone first. After a few months of having the phone I decided to get a cheap se watch to see if I would even use it. It was great so I upgraded to a series 8 when they came out. I have a big windows pc but didn’t have anything portable and using my phone for some things was becoming annoying, so I grabbed an m1 MacBook Air on sale for I think $700 after the M2 was released and it’s been very nice.

We picked up the AppleTV4k because our Vizio tv suuuuucks with the built in OS and quit working a lot. So we needed a standalone smart system. I have had chromecasts forever but figured that since we already pay for Apple One that getting the Apple TV would integrate better. And it has.

My wife prefers tablets to laptops so the iPad works great for her. If you do a ton of work on your laptop though, you can airplay to an iPad as a second screen which is handy.

As for the software, like I mentioned we already have Apple One so I use iCloud for pretty much everything. I use keychain for all my passwords. I use the native health app. Only one I don’t use is mail. I still use gmail for that.

I don’t have home pods or anything. We had a couple of google homes and they have ended up just sitting in a box because we don’t use them. I may end up getting a couple of them to use as a cheaper stereo system for the TV but we’re having our new house pre-wired for in ceiling surround sound so I doubt it. Might grab one for music in the kitchen or something but that’s pretty low on the list of things I want lol.

Earthwormjim91,

All new cars are overpriced, but this price cut puts the Lightning as cheaper than a comparable gasser F150.

It only comes in an AWD super crew, and includes the better tech package. To get a super crew CLT gasser in 4x4 is about 5k more expensive than the pro trim Lightning, and the Lightning has more features at the base model than the XLT gasser

Earthwormjim91,

They wouldn’t be red meat because that’s a mammalian thing.

Depending on the dinosaur and how they move they would either be white meat like poultry or dark redder meat like game birds (geese, ducks, cranes, etc).

A lot of the theropod dinosaurs would have very dark meat legs and white meat breast since they don’t do much flying. Sauropods would likely be very dark meat since they did a lot of walking around grazing.

Earthwormjim91,

Culinarily yeah they’re basically red meat. At least according to the USDA though, only mammalian meat can be considered “red meat”. Duck would be dark meat.

That’s kinda splitting hairs though at this point since plenty of fowl have darker red meat than plenty of mammals. All pork is considered red meat even though plenty of it is culinarily white meat.

Earthwormjim91,

I mean, the content here lately is 15 year old memes.

A lot of the boom is people that were too lame to get karma on Reddit so they spam dumb things here now and get upvotes because everyone is still in “upvote everything to help the community” mode.

Earthwormjim91,

Sealioning is the constant bad faith, feigning ignorance, asking for evidence of everything under the guise of “just asking questions”. Then ignoring any evidence presented and moving on to the next demand. Used to shut down discourse entirely.

Tankies are leftists that defend or deny the atrocities committed by authoritarian communist regimes like the Soviet Union or the CCP. It was first used to describe communists in Great Britain that defended the Soviet Union for using tanks to crush anti-communist revolutions.

Earthwormjim91,

Not entirely. They’re using Android Automotive and just removing CarPlay and Android auto capability.

Earthwormjim91,

Dedicating whole communities to a single person is very cringe.

Thinking someone is hot is fine. When it crosses into a quasi-obsessive thing it’s just weird.

Earthwormjim91,

They’ll require it to be truly “over the counter” as in behind the counter at the pharmacy and you have to ask for it. Like real Sudafed.

And then you’ll get the shitty pharmacists/techs that won’t sell it on “personal beliefs” grounds like plan B.

Earthwormjim91,

True, but that introduces a whole other set of hurdles.

For example teenagers with strict, religious, or abusive parents probably wouldn’t be able to get it delivered without their parents knowing. And those teenagers are one of the biggest groups that OTC birth control would benefit.

Earthwormjim91,

Nobody is poo pooing anything. We’re pointing out the reality that the shithole red states will do everything they can to make sure the women who need this cannot get it. Just like they do with plan B and other contraception.

Inflation rose just 0.2% in June, less than expected as consumers get a break from price increases (www.cnbc.com)

Inflation fell to its lowest annual rate in more than two years during June, the product both of some deceleration in costs and easy comparisons against a time when price increases were running at a more than 40-year high.

Earthwormjim91,

Uh, yes to all 3.

Only 9% of truckers are owner operators. 91% work for companies, the vast majority of which work for large companies like SWIFT, or major retailers like Walmart.

The vast majority of miners work for large corporations too.

A majority of farmland is owned by mid-large sized corps too.

So truckers, farmers, and miners themselves might not be corpos, but they’re labor for a capitalist just like most everyone else. And those capitalist owners are looking to extract the maximum profit possible.

Earthwormjim91,

Right, the rest of the world uses…. other proprietary messaging apps that have no interoperability between them. You can’t talk from signal to WhatsApp, or WhatsApp to telegram, or telegram to signal. You all need to be using the same messaging app.

The reason why the rest of the world never really got on with SMS in general is because most providers elsewhere in the world still charge for SMS messages while they’ve been free in the US for over a decade. When you have to pay for texts, you tend to look for an alternative real quick.

Earthwormjim91,

Turkey hates Russia. So this isn’t surprising.

The Russo-Turkish wars lasted a combined nearly 400 years and after WWII when Stalin tried to claim a bunch of Turkish lands the relations were at the lowest ever. Russia and the Soviets prior have a loooong history of t ray isn’t to conquer Turkey.

Earthwormjim91,

That’s NIMBYs for you. A ton of racetracks are being closed down because people started moving into new builds around them and then complaining.

Which is just stupid on all parts. The tracks were there first, and without them it just pushes people to do stupid shit in the streets.

Earthwormjim91,

That’s normal for Samsung. They have had built in undeletable apps for years now. You can disable them but can’t delete them unless you root the phone.

It was one of the big reasons I switched away from Samsung to Pixel, and then eventually over to Apple entirely.

Earthwormjim91,

Any other car has a physical key as a backup. If the battery dies you can use the physical key to open it up and pop the hood to get to the battery to charge it.

With a Tesla you can’t do that because they don’t have a physical key.

Looks like a ring neck snake. Diadophis punctatus.

Perfectly harmless

Earthwormjim91,

It wasn’t “even allowing racism and stuff”. It was created pretty much solely to be a safe space for assholes.

Turns out that doesn’t keep the lights running.

Earthwormjim91,

Yeah, assholes.

Anyone that left Reddit just because they couldn’t belittle and demean people online is an asshole.

Earthwormjim91,

Wtf lol. I love the heat, but a dry heat. Dry heat is amazing. Humid heat just sucks

Earthwormjim91,
