AlexWIWA,

Orbital pollution and atmosphere pollution from the launches. All to avoid laying some fiber :/

AlexWIWA,

I’d rewrite the game engines for Command & Conquer games so that they could be modernized.

It’s a perfectly doable task, but not with the amount of free time I have.

AlexWIWA,

Yeah I’ve been wanting those so badly. If they open sourced red alert 2 I would be in heaven. I’d immediately start work on decoupling game speed from frame rate.

I wish I could get the generals source code so I could fix the path finding, but until I’m rich enough to retire and remake the engine, or unless they open source it, I can’t do it :/

AlexWIWA,

I’ve thought about it but their vision is pretty different from what I want to do. I want to keep red alert 2 fully original but decouple frame rate and game speed, and decouple resolution from zoom level.

AlexWIWA,

Oh yeah he’s a god. I work with him on cncnet.

AlexWIWA,

Yeah but I was never very active there.

AlexWIWA,

Yeah if three gorges broke then it would be the biggest mass death event in human history. Hydro dams are at the bottom of my list

AlexWIWA,

I think the bones are fully consumed by the teleportation ritual.

AlexWIWA,

Green and renewable fossil fuel (don’t ask where we get the bones)

AlexWIWA,

Both at the same time. Different attack vectors

AlexWIWA,

It’s days like today where I’m glad Infiniti hasn’t updated their shit since 2014.

Remote or hybrid workers, would you rather work a 4 day week on site, or WFH completely for 5 days a week, for the same pay?

I know this will vary a lot, so hypothetically let’s say you currently WFH/work remotely at least 3 days a week. Your commute to work takes an hour max (door to door) each way. If you were given the choice of a 4 day week working onsite, or a 5 day week WFH (or as many days as you’d like) for the same pay, which would you...

AlexWIWA,

I will never go back to commuting for free

AlexWIWA, (edited )

I wish my neighborhood would do this. 25mph feels really fast on my street. I usually hover around 15-20 when I’m not paying attention to my speed.

Edit: I am surprised that this was my third most controversial comment since I’ve joined

AlexWIWA,

They’re probably imagining me as that Prius or something slowing them down in traffic. My neighborhood is basically one lane when people are parked, and there are a lot of kids, so if they drove the road they’d understand.

AlexWIWA,

Yeah they always sound like the overenthusiastic 45y/o HR lady.

AlexWIWA,

Hopefully we’re just never big enough to matter.

AlexWIWA,

Yeah. Pretty easy to remove the antennas. Stock though? Probably not

AlexWIWA,

I’m a world of compilers and tab completion, there is no excuse for those function names

Where To Find Actually Good Search Engines?

I’m kind of tired of Google sending me to the same 3 sites whenever I search for something. If not the same 3 sites it’s 7 others that are so generic and boring I just feel they’re useless. It’s always makeuseof, androidauthority, or whatever other sites that have useful information but I rarely feel like they are saying...

AlexWIWA,

Google for work + kagi for personal use has been pretty cheap for me.

What are some alternatives to bars that stay open late for folks that don't drink alcohol?

Bars are notable for staying open late, but I’m not really familiar with alternatives that might operate similarly. I think many cafés (at least around my area) tend to close a few hours earlier by comparison, which would be my go-to for an alternative otherwise, so what other options are there?

How the fuck can I kill 20 hours?

My 13 hour flight just got delayed 7 hours, I’m stuck at my second airport, and I dont think I’m gonna make it. I have some movies and audio books on my phone, but really only anticipated having to burn the flight time via napping and some media, not 7 hours leading up to it, and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna mentally burn...

AlexWIWA,

Me as fuck. Though I just keep it to myself instead of trying to ruin my friends’ enjoyment.

AlexWIWA,

I hear the word immersive in his voice now

AlexWIWA,

I agree. Like most science channels, they’re really good when they stick to pure science.

The issues usually occur when they decide to weigh in on a social or policy issue that they’re not qualified to talk about. Kurtzgesagt’s blunders all seem to be related to climate policy videos and their wishful thinking regarding Hail Mary technologies saving us.

For other readers, my bias is generally pro kurtzgesagt, I have several of their posters on my wall. Their social policy videos have just been really rubbing me the wrong way.

AlexWIWA,

Sabine has been posting a lot of cringe lately. Such a bummer when a physicist decides to go down the 2009 history channel swerving out of their lane career path.

AlexWIWA,

Same with Undecided. Dude it’s basically just a shill for random startups. He’s basically just Popular Science magazine, the YouTube channel.

AlexWIWA,

Johnny Harris. I really hate the delivery style that he kept from vox. The “guys this is super bad and I’m really concerned but in a like cool and detached way.” His delivery just reminds me of every dude I’ve ever talked to at an indie coffee shop.

His content may or may not be good, but I can’t get passed his smarmy delivery to find out.

AlexWIWA,

His production quality is top tier for sure. I sadly never made it far enough into a video to evaluate accuracy.

Full disclosure though, I live in Utah so I interact with a lot of people who look and act like him so it drives me up the wall.

AlexWIWA,

That is a convincingly large pizza

AlexWIWA,

I’m not up to date on the drama. Who got defeded?

AlexWIWA,

I would love to work for one company until I retire then collect a pension. But boomers killed raises and pensions so hop I must

AlexWIWA,

This is the most horrifying diy job I’ve ever heard of

AlexWIWA,

I don’t post because I know no one will see my posts, and I don’t want to give them my data without feeding my narcism in return.

AlexWIWA,

Because people here are nice

AlexWIWA,

Yeah it truly is a bummer. The early days of myspace and Facebook were great

That feeling when you're googling the answer to some technical question, and your own Lemmy post appears 4 results down. (lemmy.one)

Hopefully this kind of content is ok here. Up until recently, when I would be searching for some kind of technical info, the top (and best) results would usually all be Reddit posts. I was very pleasantly surprised to do that this time and find a Lemmy post instead!...

AlexWIWA,

I’ve noticed Lemmy appearing more in search results already. It’s nice

AlexWIWA,

Better be careful, I hear Pepsi had the biggest warfleet in the world at one point.

AlexWIWA,

Neither do I, despite how much I’ve asked 😢

AlexWIWA,

I knew someone would beat me to it

AlexWIWA,

That’s why I’m pretty happy I made one on Lemmy.ml, they’re not really defederating.

AlexWIWA,

Too many people never used forums and think every site needs to talk to every site.

AlexWIWA,

Reddit took over because threading on forums was awful. The centralization was just a nice bonus imo.

AlexWIWA,

Sorry I missed that. My bad. Fwiw I agree. I like having all my gaming subs grouped together.

AlexWIWA,

It’s a hot take because managers won’t let us :'(
