AlecSadler,

I’d love to leave, but it seems like citizenship elsewhere is hard. Where did you end up going?

AlecSadler,

True, but my entire family uses iPhones and I made them all switch to Signal.

iMessage isn’t required.

AlecSadler,

We don’t use Signal for SMS, we use Signal for E2E encryption. Signal for SMS is useless.

I’ve basically started telling people to either message me on Signal or I likely won’t respond in a timely manner, if ever. Not my problem. Urgent? Better call.

Dick move? Maybe. But fuck SMS and fuck iMessage.

AlecSadler,

My college used to call me monthly and I kept telling them I was unemployed, for a year straight. They haven’t called in ten years now 🤷‍♂️

AlecSadler,

Personally, I use GPSLogger from FDroid on a 15 minute ping interval and then load the files into Location Map Viewer (also FDroid) for my own location tracking. Disabled Google awhile ago.

I back the files up to a home NAS.

AlecSadler,

Looks like most of the existing replies captured my same use cases!

There have also been a couple of times where my wife and I disagreed about what we did on X day and it’s kind of nice to see who is right 😂

I think I also just like the raw data. I also keep spreadsheets of my utility bills over time, for example, because it’s weirdly fun to look back and see or compare.

One thing I’d really love is a self-hosted all-day heart rate tracker, but have yet to stumble on such a thing.

AlecSadler,

I hadn’t! I’ll check it out.

AlecSadler,

I dream of the day the board / shareholders oust him. They don’t need him. He adds no value. He only owns like 11% of the stock or thereabouts. He’s nothing but a POS. Why they haven’t yet only makes me think there are some agreements / clauses in place we’re not aware of…but I hope not. Maybe 2024 will bring some respite.

I imagine…Twitter closure, Tesla ousting, it would be amazing.

AlecSadler,

That was way more clever than I think people are giving you credit for.

AlecSadler,

I can’t believe he’s a doctor…

…no wait, I can, because my friend is a doctor and has encountered a stupid number of anti-vaxxer doctors and nurses.

AlecSadler,

Agreed. But we need some leaders / generals.

AlecSadler,

Serious question…how do we end capitalism?

Like, even a near-term steps to take would be sufficient. I’m just feeling a bit run down these days. It seems like when we, the MAJORITY PEOPLE, get a win… we’re slapped in the face with ten other losses. Fascism is on the rise, inflation is insane, housing prices are insane, here in the US there is a legitimate chance Trump might win again which is extremely disheartening.

Spam calls and texts are driving me fing crazy anyone have suggestions?

After repeated data breaches that no company really seems to give a s— about my phone is blowing up with literally hundreds of spam calls and texts month. I get and make MAAAAYBE 2 or 3 important calls per month, 180-200 of the rest are literally all spam. Anyone have any suggestions, apps ect that they have found refuge with?...

AlecSadler,

I use T-Mobile Spam protection and configured it to send every unknown number directly to voicemail.

For any telemarketing, spam, etc. calls they get directly ignored without being sent to voicemail.

I’ve been lucky to only have one false positive in 5 years now, cost of doing business.

AlecSadler, (edited )

I agree with the other comment.

I found KDE Neon and Ubuntu pretty easy to use out of box as well.

PopOS has, maybe, a benefit of Nvidia drivers? But Mint installed them for me during the intro Toot Oriole.

edit: Clarified KDE to add Neon

AlecSadler,

Ah, thank you. It was KDE Neon, sorry!

AlecSadler,

What breed is it? We’ve adopted a cat that looks almost identical and the vet lumped it under American Short Hair.

AlecSadler,

Feel free to DM me a link to check out.

AlecSadler,

Sounds good. I promise no judgment. I’ll follow, tune in periodically, and support however I can from where I am.

And if you don’t want it shared, so be it. I’ll respect that.

And if you want feedback or critique, feel free to ask, but I’ll likely keep it to myself otherwise.

AlecSadler,

Billions for me. The spinoffs don’t sound appealing.

AlecSadler,

As someone who is periodically in areas without good cell service. That’s…pretty badass.

AlecSadler,

I’ve granted / re-granted all permissions (in some cases probably ones it doesn’t need). It has all sensor access.

The data is there on the watch for each missing day in the app, and the app reports it’s synced. It just doesn’t show in the app :/

AlecSadler,

Same days are missing on the site as well.

AlecSadler,

Vivaldi here, too. Only because half my contract gigs require Chrome testing.

Otherwise, I’d be Firefox 95% of the time (except for sites I use to pay bills that don’t work in Firefox).

AlecSadler,

As a business owner, there is also a monthly generic processing fee. Oftentimes there’s a software licensing fee. There’s also a compliance fee (sometimes). There are also periodic shore-up fees of the over/under was off during the month. Sometimes there are equipment rental fees or service fees, or you can buy it outright but there’s typically still a monthly fee to use it.

Also AmEx is the worst offender depending on your processor, they can charge upwards of 6% to process. Discover is around 3%. Visa & MC are ~1-2%. That’s why blended processors tend to be around 2-3%, but it also depends on volume.

Honestly, looking back at a former small business I had, I think it would have been better to be cash only and have an ATM. I know it’d annoy some customers, but our fees/costs just to accept cards was probably 5-10% of gross revenues each month. Then you take out labor, utilities, rent, raw cogs, etc. and your net margin gets real small, real fast.

AlecSadler,

I give it 10 months…tops.

AlecSadler,

Huh? I’ve had to do that for years now. How did yours ever pair?

AlecSadler,

My Tesla lease can’t end soon enough. I’m so fucking sick of Elon. I momentarily hoped the board would remove him…but, nope. Get fucked Elon.

AlecSadler,

I…can’t actually tell if he’d make a better duck or lemonade stand character.

AlecSadler,

Is there a good alternative, maybe locally hosted, for location history?

While I’ve recently disabled it for Google, it actually was helpful for going back in time and remembering where I was on X day, on numerous occasions. Would be cool if there was a locally hosted, open source alternative.

AlecSadler,

Android tablets as linked devices is why I use it. Something Signal seems to refuse to add.

AlecSadler,

Oh my god, I forgot about Skate or Die. Sometimes I’d just leave it on the title screen for the awesome music (haha…)

Found this lodged in my cat's tail. It was well healed over by the time we found it. (sh.itjust.works)

See pics, found this thing well healed in my cat’s tail. Came out with no resistance and no bleeding. Looks like a tip to something, but not sure. Cat is less than 6 months old. Thoughts? The grooves you see are from my pliers. It’s hollow and seems to be aluminum or some other soft metal....

AlecSadler,

That’s putting it nicely.

AlecSadler,

I used StartAllBack to fix the Win11 taskbar, works well.

AlecSadler,

Probably controversial, but as a full-stack dev that is front-end leaning, I hate everything to do with “material”. Be it MUI or Angular Material or otherwise, I hate it all and advocate heavily at any gig to stray away from it whenever possible.

AlecSadler,

I have an NES that still works. Looks great on this old CRT TV I had in college.

I’m actually less worried about the NES failing so much as the TV failing and then I’m not sure what I’d do…

A contract for 75,000 Kaiser Permanente workers expired. Historic US health care strike could start Wednesday (www.cnn.com)

A coalition of eight unions representing 75,000 employees of Kaiser Permanente said late Saturday that is has not reached an agreement with the company, setting the stage for the largest healthcare strike in US history on Wednesday....

AlecSadler,

What a year. Keep it up everyone!

AlecSadler,

Outlook does this and it’s stupid and useless.

So is this.

AlecSadler,

Battletoads

AlecSadler,

Huh. I could’ve sworn I never had an expansion pack, but now I’m wondering how I ever played / beat that game. A quick Google search says it was required and nearly capped usage of the additional 8MB, too. TIL.

[USA] Massive emergency alert test scheduled to hit your phone on Wednesday. Here's what to know. (www.usatoday.com)

“Get ready to not freak out. On Wednesday, October 4 at 2:20 p.m. ET, every TV, radio and cellphone in the United States should blare out the distinctive, jarring electronic warning tone of an emergency alert.”

AlecSadler,

Perfect. I have a 1-on-1 meeting with my manager during that time.

AlecSadler,

Dark Mode anything gives me headaches in sub 10 minutes, so I really can’t agree with this comment.

I did a report in college on eye strain and, at least at the time, most findings seemed to support that dark mode lends itself to greater eye strain. That was 12+ years ago though.

I also have astigmatism, so that may play into my issues with dark mode.

AlecSadler,

Once things are settled with my current legal crap, I’ll gladly share it. But I’d rather not right now, just in case.
